My g-g-grandmother was Honora/Hanora(h) Foley, m. John Geary in 1867. They lived in Ardmore, Co. Waterford and their dtr Elizabeth Mary (sometimes Lizzie) Geary, b. 1870, m. Eugene Albert Smith in 1888 in Oneida Castle, NY. When she died in 1912 , after a long illness, her obit mentions three sisters in NYC: Mrs. stacia Ahern, Mrs. Anne Costello, and Ellen Geary, and two (unnamed) sisters in Ireland. I have had the devil of a time trying to track down even her definitive arrival in the US! At any rate, there may be a Foley connection, if you know where in Waterford yours were from...unless you simply meant Waterford city in your post. I'm always happy for any help and would like to be able to help others as well. John Geary of Alabama, a cousin of some degree, found a query I posted in 2001 and was enormously helpful. (Hi, John! Our trip to Ireland had to be canceled, but we hope to get there next spring.) Do let me know if we might have a connection. I had never heard of that before and did not know nicknames were used. The Thomas Phelan who was a baker in Waterford was born in the Carrick on Suir area. I don't know if it was the same Phelan bakery in the 1940-1950 time but I will ask and see what I can find out. One of the elderly Phelan family members is still alive and has memories of that bakery. > Also James - My Thomas Phelan born 1844 Carrick on Suir was married to Ellen Power and my other 4th grandfather Michael Morrissey was married to Catherine Power. It really is not surprising the variations ,when one considers the original Gaelic name. "O'Faolain" pronounced o phwaylawn . One can quite easily see what happens if the if the oph is dropped it becomes waylain which then progresses to Whelan or Whalen ,On the other hand if the w is dropped the name can then progress Phelan or Phalen.A large number of these developments occurred on registration due to the dialect used by the person registering. There is also the possibility of the owners themselves making these changes ,like dropping the o and the elongated vowel sounds to lose their Gaelic origins due to the difficulties when seeking employment in those bad old days. > I wholeheartedly agree with those sentiments already expressed regarding the commercialization of the availability of these church registers which to my mind goes against al sense of the meaning of true Christian charity. I am certain that in the main the churches concerned would gain far more by taking a leaf from the Mormon Church which throws open much easier access to their records and at far less cost. > Sent from my iPad > > On Oct 3, 2011, at 22:51, Terry Phelan <Tphelan100@aol.com> wrote: > >> Jan, >> Not a nickname but other variations: >> Phelon >> Phalen >> Phalon >> >> >> On Oct 3, 2011, at 12:53 PM, Janet Crawford <reojan@gmail.com> wrote: >> >>> Hi all, There is a chance the Phelan's, in addition to using the >>> variation Whelan, may also have used nicknames but I have never seen >>> any.
