Yes, we do owe them. The diaspora has always been looked upon as a defeat for the Irish caused by the Famine [An Gorta Mor or The Great Hunger]. However, when one looks at what the Irish have done throughout the world after they emigrated, it is actually one of the greatest successes, looking at all the Irish who attained greatness outside of Ireland. Enda Kenny wants to make 2012 the year of The Gathering, when the Irish return to the homeland to meet their relatives.
