    3. I think our families are probably related; perhaps cousins.  My great grandfather was: James Phelan born 23 March 1876 and his parents were Thomas Phelan and Ellen Phelan nee Power.  Thomas Phelan was a baker who lived at Trinity Without, Ballybricken on Barrack St. James Phelan married Ellen Morrissey in Oct of 1899 at Holy Trinity Without, Ballybricken. (I have a pic of the church from that time if anyone would like it-let me know).  Ellen Morrissey listed Yellow Road as her residence on her civil marriage record. Her parents were Michael Morrissey and Catherine nee Power. James and Ellen moved to the US an arrived on the Ivernia 28 Apr 1900. )I thought it was interesting that your Phelan's were in Cambridge. The ship manifest lists four people from Waterford-two were James and Ellen and one was a Dan Collins. It always looked to me like the person making the record came down the list with names and then headed back up the list when filling out the rest. Although it states that Dan Collins was headed for Cambridge it said my great grandparents were headed to Yonkers. I still wonder about that. Cambridge is very close to Somerville where my great grandparents settled.)   CARA:  I think it may have been my  message that you saw.  I have only the civil record for the marriage of James Phelan and Ellen Morrissey.  I posted that I would like to have the church record as I hoped it might have mothers names on it.  The civil record lists only fathers. MARTHA:  It might be useful to compare notes about our families. Perhaps we could do that between the two of us and then post any fruitful outcomes on the board rather than use the board for wonderings?  Either way is fine.  I think my James and Ellen probably headed for Cambridge as the ship manifest noted because they had relatives there.    Janet Phelan ________________________________ From: Stringer <stringer@mstringer.net> To: 'Cara_Links' <cara_links@bigpond.com>; waterford@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, October 3, 2011 9:17 AM Subject: Re: [WATERFORD] PHELAN NAME WATERFORD -BALLYBRICKEN Hi Cara, I might be the person you're thinking of re PHELAN/WHELAN from Trinity Without, Ballybricken - sent you headstone photos and other data collected when there in 2003. ALL of Margaret's records in the US (1895 marriage, Boston, MA - 1952 death, Cambridge, MA) are as WHALEN! No two items have the same age - all younger than 1867. Reallllly would like to find the birth of her parents, particularly her father, James.  I know he was also in the US, but have never found him in the US Censuses (should be in 1900, maybe 1910; have his photo on my wall).  As he married 1866, his birth would be before civil registration. I had Margaret's name and the names of her parents - and suspected Waterford City (do have one photo taken at the quay).  Local research did find the marriage and births/baptisms of the children (flat rate €82).  When I asked about seeking the births of the parents (2003) told it would be DOUBLE the original cost for EACH of the two births. I was told (by a helpful person in the tourist office) of a city registry office (in a medical facility, not far from the Waterford factory).  I was very kindly allowed to look through the original books; found the civil entries, which they did photocopy for me.  I found no deaths of her mother or the children.  Since then I 'may' have found evidence (MA vital records) that some of the sisters were also in Boston/Cambridge, but nothing for certain.  Will save this story for a separate missive. Now my question is how would you sort all the Phelan's out ? I have  never seen so many with that name as I have seen in Waterford. Now what records are to be included from what parishes on Waterford? does anyone have an update on that, because I am about to look at Ballybricken parish register for Waterford, and  will hold off offering to look for anyone elses people, if this is to be one of those appearing online.
