Fr. Robert Arthure is the wit of Cappoquin. Some years ago, based on parish information in Ryan's Irish Records, I wrote to the parish priest, Fr. Murphy. About three weeks later, I got a letter from Fr. Arthure. It opened with the following: 'Fr.Murphy is unlikely to respond as he died a number of years ago.' (The letter went on to provide some helpful information.) Everyone I talked to in Cappoquin said that he was one of the funniest people they had ever met. Dave Collins Hudson, MA, USA
Dave, Now I am very sorry that we didn't go to Cappoquin parish when we were there. We did go to Newcastle Parish and to Ardfinnan Parish and to Mt Melleray Abbey. Also to the old cemetery's around those churches as well as some on private land and others that were maintained only once a year... But I never thought to go to Cappoquin. We had the (then) parish priest of Newcastle drop in to our B&B with all of the very old church books, both baptism and marriage and he said to bring them back the next Wednesday. I was amazed as we had scheduled to be at the rectory the next day to view those same books. We were just about to start dinner, so we invited him to join us and also served some Irish whiskey. Interesting. We were very, very careful with the books and took as many photos as we could. All in Latin of course and some difficult to read being faded or otherwise. I will be sure not to write to Fr Murphy. Regards, Sandy On 10/15/2011 11:03 AM, David Collins wrote: > Fr.
