For church records it is always helpful to look first in the film and microfilm catalog at www.familysearch.org because the LDS church has church records in film and fiche formats from all over the world. Some bishops forbid the filming of their records, and some have been damaged or destroyed, so yours may not be among the millions of records they have. But it's always worth a goof long look in the online catalog. Carefully copy or print out all the information about each film or fiche you would like to rent. The films can be rented for you to use at the nearest Family History Center, which has film readers and microfiche readers you can use free -- some public libraries will also be able to rent these films and will have readers (enlargers) for you. The current short film rental is about $5, I think, for four weeks including mailing time. It will be sent to your location from the Mormons' great Family History Library in Salt Lake City and you may use it for several weeks. Check for your nearest Family History Center by clicking on the link on the home page at www.familysearch.org. They are located all over the world. If you call and ask, they may be able to find your film or fiche already in a drawer there, because someone has placed it on a short or permanent loan. Then you can use it free as long as it is there. Maureen, I have used the FHC for many films but I seem to have trouble with church registers, specifically Catholic registers. I know folks who have gotten them for Meath and Westmeath back into the 1700's. I did try to get a Waterford film that was blocked. My problem is I think I'm using the wrong search parameters in the LDS catalog. I can't seem to find much in the way of parochial registers from Waterford, Tipperary, Cork or Kerry. I must be searching incorrectly if others have found Meath, Westmeath yet I cannot seem to get even 1 of my counties. I seem to get more hits than I can deal with or nothing when I search. I'd love to order films if I could just get the correct film numbers. Any hints on how to narrow my searches to just Catholic Parish Registers for the above mentioned counties? I'd appreciate any pointers as I'm obviously doing something wrong when I search.
