3. May I suggest that you perhaps pull up online the local Newspaper for the area and perhaps post a small advert saying you will be in Waterford and would like to contact relatives. Another thing to do perhaps is also look at the Golden Pages online for Ireland see if there are any of these folk in the area still. And again, perhaps just a stroll to the parish church and speak to someone there But mostly I would also pull up online the Waterford Library and ask them to post your request that you will be visiting their library at a given time, and would like to meet anyone that thinks they may be related to these people, with a view to simply having a chat, perhaps if you stress it as a simple affair you may get some contact with your relatives. That is my pennies worth petal, unless you would like to sit down with me in Waterford for a chat in the summer, Cheers Cara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arthur Rotondi" <arotond@yahoo.com> To: <WATERFORD@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 21, 2010 7:08 AM Subject: [WATERFORD] WALSH GENEALOGY I'm trying to trace the descendants of Martin and Mary (Murphy) Walsh. 3. Hi To All It has been a busy month in Waterford County Museum. Don't forget that you can now follow our activities on Facebook at www.facebook.com/waterfordcountymuseum If anyone has any comments on what you would like to see us covering in our newsletter please feel free to get in touch with us. Yours Willie Whelan --------------------------- Table Of Contents --------------------------- 1. Museum Wins South East Heritage & Cultural Award 2. Review The Museum On Tripadvisor 3. Waterford History Network 4. Museum Spring Exhibition On Edmond Keohan, Photographer 5. Contact Us --------------------------- Museum Wins South East Heritage & Cultural Award --------------------------- The South East Heritage & Cultural Awards are now in their second year of operation. The awards are sponsored by the Munster Express and Dooley's Hotel, and seek to recognise and reward groups and individuals across the South East of Ireland who promote the Regions Heritage Craft and Culture. There are 4 Awards annually comprising of 4 categories, complete with an overall award. Waterford County Museum were delighted to be awarded the Heritage Group Award for the first quarter of 2010. A large group from our committee travelled to the ceremony. Nicholas Graves accepted the award on behalf of Waterford County Museum. Dermot Keyes from the Munster Express then conducted a wide ranging interview with Willie Whelan on the work of Waterford County Museum. After that it was time for photographs followed by a very nice buffet and wine reception courtesy of Dooley's hotel. The photographs from the award ceremony will no doubt surface on this blog site in due course. The event is due to be covered in the next edition of the Munster Express published on the 19th May 2010. Our thanks to Dooleys Hotel and The Munster Express for the recognition. Thanks are also due to Dungarvan Town Council (represented at the cermemony by Deputy Town Mayor Micheál Cosgrave, Town Manager Dennis McCarthy, Waterford County Librarian Jean Webster and County Heritage Officer Bernadette Guest), Waterford Leader Partnership, FÁS, and our dedicated staff who put so much effort into making the museum what it is. Finally we would like to thank the Waterford County Museum 'audience' at home, abroad and online for their advice, support and occasional constructive criticism. --------------------------- Review The Museum On Tripadvisor --------------------------- I have recently listed the museum on Tripadvisor. You can find the Waterford County Museum section of Tripadvisor at http://bit.ly/ahLtQ0 as most of you are aware Tripadvisor is a web site that allows holiday makers to review accommodation, restaurants or attractions they have visited. If anyone has visited the museum since we revamped it 12 months ago we would be very grateful if you would review us. It would also be great for us to see what we are getting right (and wrong). --------------------------- Waterford History Network --------------------------- In an effort to promote history across the County the museum has helped develop an initiative (with help from County Heritage Officer Bernadette Guest) that is going to try and link all of the local history groups operating in County Waterford. Essentially we are starting up a mailing list, facebook pages and blogs so that participant groups will be aware of what other groups are up to. This will hopefully mean that we will share information between ourselves and the public in a more efficient manner. We are going to have joint training days and a single Google Calendar for heritage events in Waterford County. Some cross promotion of events and sharing of exhibitions will also be an aim. At the moment participating groups are Portlaw Heritage Centre, Dolmen Historical Group (Butlerstown, Kilmeaden, Waterford City), Tallow Heritage Committee, Dunhill Education Centre, Gaultier Historical Society, Bunmhaon Heritage Society, Waterford County Museum, Cappoquin Heritage Group, Waterford City Library, Waterford County Library, Waterford County Archive Service and local historian Sean Murphy. A great day was had on Saturday 8th May at the training day organised by the Waterford History Network in Dunhill Education Centre. Willie Whelan from Waterford County Museum spoke about how local history groups could use the web to help them in their work. A particular emphasis was placed on Facebook and using Blogging Software. The Waterford History Network should mean that participating groups will be better able to serve the needs of their communities in the coming years. --------------------------- Museum Spring Exhibition On Edmond Keohan, Photographer --------------------------- On Friday April 23rd our latest exhibition "Edmond Keohan (1852-1934) Photographer" was launched. This will be the first time that a complete exhibition has been prepared to highlight the work of this Dungarvan based photographer. Edmond Keohan was the first full time professional photographer to record people, places and events in this area. This exhibition features original cameras owned by Keohan, publications and events. A number of photographs in this exhibition are printed from newly donated glass negative plates and have not been previously published. The exhibition is open daily 10am to 5 pm and will run through out the summer. As with all exhibitions in the museum admission is free. --------------------------- Contact Us --------------------------- You can contact the museum at history@waterfordmuseum.ie or you can phone 058 45960. 3. Just a comment: The only records I had were a son's death record where it mentioned the parent's birthplace (Grange & Newcastle) and the names of the children with what turned out to be incorrect birthdates. I sent a request to the Waterford Heritage Center with the information I had. They were able to find baptismal dates for 11 of 13 children of my ggg grandparents, dates ranging from 1816 to 1834. Unfortunately, they did not find the only child who (family story says) remained in Tipperary. It cost about $200 (less than $20 per name for those they did find) but all in all, it was a good thing as it verified or corrected information - dates and names. Subsequently I was able to visit Newcastle Parish and was able to view the actual record at the church and as I now had the actual dates, I was able to go to the right page for each child. The records are in Latin, but it's not too hard to translate. Doing all this research myself would have been impossible without going to Dublin as Janet says. My families records are in Waterford Heritage center because they were from Newcastle Parish which is part of Lismore Diocese. 3. In September 1997 I visited Tramore, the birthplace of my grandfather, John McGrath, born March 27, 1863. In the spring of 1997 I had contacted Star of the Sea Church there for information and received the name of a gentleman who was an enormous help. He even brought me to my great-grandfather's land. Please contact me at ebulger1@nycap.rr.com for more information. Tramore is a small seaside resort town, south of the City of Waterford, used for vacation by the Irish. I don't think tour buses go there. They had a Ferris Wheel, etc., and a few arcades and the beach. Just south are some lovely cliffs, not huge but interesting to see. 3. Ruth, It looks like they only exist for beginning 1797 for baptisms and beginning 1799 for marriages for RC records. If you are looking for Church of Ireland records, they might go back much farther. There are, at the moment, only 3 ways to access them: >From the films at the National Library in Dublin for RC records >From the local parish priest (with donation recommended) for RC records, and it is iffy on how long it might take to get an answer as they are truly very busy. >From Waterford Heritage for either RC or C of I records: http://www.iol.ie/~mnoc/ You can also get C of I records from the church office in Dublin. Those IFHF records can be difficult as it costs 5 Euro a peek and unless one is very sure which record one wants, the cost can add up fast. Waterford Heritage, although pricey, is probably the best and fastest way to go unless you are going to Dublin anyway, although looking at the films can take many hours or days. One of these men was a James Carroll from Waterford I know that he was Private 7453 James Carroll of Royal Irish Regt. It is difficult to be sure in 1911 census , but he would appear to be James Carroll, of 19 Mayors Walk, Waterford, in the 1911 census. If he is this man, then he is the son of Richard and Kate Carroll.T hat gives him aged 18 and a plumber in 1911 Can anyone help me by adding anything else about this man. There were 4 other Waterford men in Irish Brigade, and information on any of them welcome. By definition, they were all prisoners of war in Germany in WW1. And any onformation on them welcome too. 10698 James Kennedy - Private, Royal Irish Regiment 9877 Patrick Holohan - Private, Royal Irish Regiment (he died in captivity in March 1916) 10933 Thomas McGrath, Private, Royal Irish Regiment If you need to know more about the info I have on then, then please email me

I tried to duplicate the issue on this end it appears the pathways are working correctly. What ever happened may have been a very temporary thing. If you get any new experiences or problems with anonymous unsubscribing on those same lists, please let us know again. We will keep our ears open to other similar issues. So far your report is the only one, so we will keep this as a possibility of other issues to watch for. Thank you for your help in reporting this to us." If anyone happens to get unsubbed from now on, please contact me directly first so I can see if there was a reason, i.e. bounced messages, and then I will advise you to just sub back in and I will let the Help desk know that the problem occured again. I am sorry this happened and am not sure what to do about the 7 people that got unsubbed as I can't tell if any of them intended co-incidentally to unsub for a vacation or something and wouldn't want to be arbitralily subbed back in. 1. Re: [WATERFORD] tramore Catholic churches
    2. Ellen asks: === I'm not sure what the names of churches would be in that area circa 1830-1860.?? Any suggestions would be very appreciated. === Ellen, I have "some" information for you. Currently, the town of Tramore has only one RC church, (The Exaltation of the) Holy Cross Church. You can get current information, contact numbers, etc. from the diocese website at: == www.waterfordlismore.com ==. As far as the 1830 to 1860 period is concerned, here are some excerpts from Patrick Power's 1937 "Waterford & Lismore" history book. This is a bit on the founding of the church: "Tramore church, one of the finest structures of its kind in Ireland, is an enduring monument to the architectural genius of McCarthy and to the magnificent courage and resource of Rev. Nicholas Cantwell. It was commenced in 1856 and completed in 1871, at a cost of £18,000, on a site given free by Lord Doneraile.". The following paragraph consists of only one sentence, but it is probably very significant for your situation: "The Parochial Registers begin in 1785, but there is a break from 1831 to 1857 as the books for that period were destroyed accidentally by fire." I do not know where Roman Catholics would have worshipped during the early part of the 1800's (before Tramore Church was in use). My first thought was Drumcannon, as that was the civil parish seat at one time. But the medieval church there, already disused, was "modified" by the Anglican Bishop Mills in 1735 and converted to a Protestant church (Power's book, and the Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford). In the Ordnance Survey Letters of 1841, John O'Donovan in his description of the Duncannon church, implies that the church was disused by that time: "The other windows are large and very modern and it appears from the plastering on the inside that the building is not long out of use." There is a "graveyard of considerable extent attached to this Church" (J O'D), but I don't know if it is still in use. Power identifies Parish Priests in the 1700's who were buried in that graveyard. I've probably given you more bad news than good.....sorry about that. 3. Hi All The museum has been busy recently as you can see from our blog entries at http://waterfordmuseum.blogspot.com *Waterford County Library* Waterford County Library Service has launched a facebook page for Local Studies at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dungarvan-Ireland/Waterford-County-Library-Local-Studies/108735692479501?ref=ts This would be a good way to keep track of any new databases for projects that the library might be launching that are of interest to historians or genealogists. * The Museum Is On Facebook* While you are at it become a fan of the museum's facebook page at www.facebook.com/waterfordcountymuseum *Waterford History Network* The museum has helped develop an initiative (with help from County Heritage Officer Bernadette Guest) that is going to try and link all of the local history groups operating in Waterford. Essentially we are starting up a mailing list, facebook pages and blogs so that participant groups will be aware of what other groups are up to. This will (hopefully) mean that we will share information between ourselves and the public in a more efficient manner. We also hope to have joint training days and a single Google Calendar for heritage events in Waterford County. Some cross promotion of events and sharing of exhibitions will also be an aim. At the moment participating groups are Portlaw Heritage Centre, Dolmen Historical Group (Butlerstown, Kilmeaden, Waterford City), Tallow Heritage Committee, Dunhill Education Centre, Gaultier Historical Society, Bunmhaon Heritage Society, Waterford County Museum and local historian Sean Murphy. We are aware we have left out one or two groups inadvertently. We will try and get these on board as quickly as we can. It will take some time before this group makes an impact but over time we hope that the network will help us improve all of our services to the the community. *Family History Records* The museum is going to set aside a filing cabinet to store photocopies of family history documents. For instance I have two gran-uncles in the Royal Navy and Royal Field Artillery, photocopies of their military records sourced from the National Archives will now be filed away in the museum. Other documents we would be interested in would include merchant navy records, IRA pension applications etc.. We would also be open to suggestions as to other document types we would store. They would need to relate to people of Co. Waterford origin. The advantage for the museum is that we would have great source material for future exhibitions. The advantage for donors is that the material would be archived in a safe place.
