    1. [WATERFORD] Rootsweb's AOL problem
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. I am posting this here first before I contact all the AOL people individually. Apparently the "AOL problem" all along was really a Rootsweb originated problem. Rootsweb now tells me: "RootsWeb made changes to their mail system that broke the AOL whitelisting agreement and AOL fixed it after RootsWeb contacted them." Sigh. Seems all is now fixed and you are able to subscribe back in with an AOL address and get a confirmation back and get messages. Please go here and subscribe either under individual messages or digest format: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/CoTipperary.html If anyone has a problem, please contact me immediately and I will help. On behalf of Rootsweb, I sincerely apologise for the craziness and inconvenience. Janet

    3. I sent out a message to all of them yesterday and as of now, only three have re-subbed, two to AOL and one to another service (I assume the second one is a re-sub). Thanks for all your help on this, Janet. I didn't do it because some of my people switched services, and some may want to change from individual messages to digests, or vice versa. I stand ready to help, however, if anyone needs help. 3. Ray you don't have to copy them as gmail gives them all to you in one place and you can just e-mail them by clicking on their addy in the bounce. Much easier when you have so many to do. I have no idea if they each got an unsubscribe message or not. I would guess not. If AOL is as messed up as I think it is, then they may not be getting our individual messages either, which is why I also posted it on the list. Carmen said he would get his mail if he was in his mail program, and if he was not the messages never get to him. He would see that he had messages, but when he went in to get them, they were not there and gone off his pending. Yes, you can use my message. This is going to apply to every Rootsweb list. An AOL user could sub back in and use Digest format for messages and hold on a little longer, but until and if AOL fixes this, it would only be only a stalling measure. 1. [WATERFORD] Important Admin message - re AOL & others
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. Every Rootsweb list has had massive unsubscribes for AOL users, including this CoTipperary one. Folks, they aren't here anymore and there is no sense putting them back on only to have them unsubbed again. This is all AOL's problem, not Rootsweb's at all, and until AOL fixes whatever it is, there is nothing Rootsweb nor I can do about it. We lost the single subbers first and today all the AOL digest users are gone because Rootsweb's computers will only take so many bounces [unable to deliver to this AOL user] before it unsubs the person. There is no hint that AOL can fix their problems, or at least not anytime soon. I am going to write to all these people later today and ask them to consider using another service, like gmail, so we can get them back on the list getting messages. AOL claims that this started November 1st, but I know for a fact that Carmen has been having problems with his AOL mail since Spring. I wanted to post this here so you all know that if you want to contact someone re a message and they are an AOL user, you will have to do it directly with little chance of your message getting to them. When I write to them later, the same will be true - they may not get my message either, so I want this in the Archives so they can read this there as a last resort. It appears that if they are in their e-mail account when a message comes in, they will get it; otherwise not or not always. It is quite random. Since Yahoo and Comcast and Hotmail have also had [hacking] problems, please consider setting up a Google mail account just for Rootsweb as their system seems to be immune from hacking and not prone to crazy programming problems. They also have a terrific spam program that really works. If or when you do switch services, you will have to go to the home page here http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/CoTipperary.html to unsub under the old address and also to sub under the new one. Anyone having problems, I will be happy to help. Janet

    3. Janet Thank you for posting this. I am the admin of the Co. Kerry list and a member of a couple of other lists that probably have no clue as to what is going on. If you have no objections, I'm going to lightly revise your post and send it on to others. Do the AOL subscribers get the "you have been unsubscribed" message from Rootsweb? it's good to know that the second batch of unsubscribes that I got today is probably the digest subscribers. I'll have to contact one of them to verify that before I send out a message. I have been copying the unsubbed addresses so I should be able to send out only two messages. Thank you again. 1. [WATERFORD] Familypedia: the Biggest Genealogy Site You Probably Never Heard Of
    2. Ray Marshall
    3. Eastman's On-line Genealogy Newsletter http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2010/11/familypedia-the-bigge st-genealogy-site-you-probably-never-heard-of.html Familypedia: the Biggest Genealogy Site You Probably Never Heard Of Are you familiar with Familypedia, a web site with 84,983 online articles about deceased individuals plus another 106,312 genealogy-related pages? Familypedia is a wiki, part of the commercial Wikia site. It is a place where YOU can create articles about your ancestors and easily link them to other articles about where and when they lived. The site is primarily text-based with biographical pages about deceased individuals. In some cases, you can find pictures of individuals as well as pedigree charts, maps, and other graphics. In most cases, each deceased person has a separate web page giving details about his or her life and also containing hyperlinks to other web pages that contain information about the person's relatives. Entire families can be hyperlinked together. Familypedia can be used alone as a separate service, or it can be linked via hyperlinks to other online services, such as Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org, or independent web pages created by individuals. Because the Familypedia web site has a wiki format, you can work collaboratively with others to create a network of articles about your ancestors and about those they lived and worked with. The site has no constraints on where the data resides, so you can provide links to your ancestors on whatever web sites host the information. Before you start entering your own ancestors on Familypedia, you will want to see if there is already some information about them or their family. To find existing information, you can go to http://www.familypedia.wikia.com and use the search box. However, a more organized search method is to use the Surnames Index, Birth Country Index, Death Country Index, Birth Decade Index, or Death Decade Index, all found on the same home page. I started by searching on my own surname and found a number of individuals listed. However, they were not tied together as a "family" but appeared to be somewhat random listings. As I tried other surnames from my own family tree, I found several families linked together with a lot of information. All information on Familypedia is contributed by users, so we can expect the quantity and quality of information to vary widely. Since anyone can edit a wiki, I could jump right into collaboration mode even though I don’t know the other contributors personally. I could add to their information about the individuals I have researched, change anything I knew to be incorrect, or create a new web page for other individuals and link them to related people. In short, Familypedia and other wikis are truly democratic communities. Any user can create a new web page for any individual at any time. Perhaps even better, any user can also edit each existing page. If you have supplemental information about an individual you find already listed, or if you wish to correct an error on a page, you can do so within seconds. If you can type and click, you can edit almost every page in a wiki. Of course, such anarchy invites spam, graffiti, and other junk to be added by uncaring users. Like most wikis, Familypedia easily handles such junk. Multiple copies are saved for each page on the site. When you visit a page, the latest version is displayed. If you see inappropriate content, you (or anyone else) can click on EDIT and then on SHOW CHANGES to show the various revisions. Finally, click on the last unmolested web page to revert to that version. It actually takes more time to create graffiti than it does to delete it. Therefore, spammers and other unwelcome "guests" soon lose interest and move on to other pastures. Each and every user becomes an editor, able to delete unwanted content within seconds. Likewise, if anyone deletes good content, a click on EDIT and then on SHOW CHANGES will show all the different revisions, including those previously deleted. With a few more mouseclicks, any deleted pages can be restored in seconds. The reality is that Familypedia, Wikipedia, and other online wikis receive very little spam or other unwanted junk. The self-policing by users works well as long as there are plenty of users. The more popular the site becomes, the better the self-policing effort works. Unlike some other wikis, Familypedia allows anyone to add or correct information, even without creating an account. However, there are advantages to creating a free account. For one thing, your free account lets you register a user name for yourself. Becoming known under that user name means that you will be able to gain reputation and recognition in the community when others see your user name as the person who made the changes. Registered users also can do more with the site; they can upload pictures, create personal "watchlists" to keep an eye on favorite articles, be notified of changes by email, and other advanced features. User names can be whatever you choose, within a few common sense limits (no profanity, no spam, etc.) and can be fully anonymous. Other users will not see your real name, address, telephone number, or other personal information. However, registered users may optionally create a user talk page where others can contact them. Information shown on a talk page can include as much or as little information as each person wishes to share. Familypedia is a part of the family of wikis available at Wikia.com. Other wikis on the same service are devoted to television shows, movies, food, fashion, environmental sustainability, online games, lifestyle, and many other topics. In fact, if you want to start a new wiki about a topic that is not covered by an existing wiki, you can do so within seconds. Wikia is supported by advertising, so the site is free for all users. If you have an interest in genealogy wikis, you will want to check out the free Familypedia at http://www.familypedia.wikia.com To see a typical web page about a person, look at Barack Obama's page at http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Barack_Obama_%281961%29 OK, so perhaps that is not a "typical" page; but, it does illustrate the sort of page that you can create for any or all of your ancestors. It includes pictures, a biography, links to relatives, and even a scanned image of his signature. Clicking on the name of any of Obama's relatives takes you to a page for that person. Familypedia strongly suggests that you only create pages for deceased individuals or for public figures, such as the President of the United States. For more information, go to http://www.familypedia.wikia.com and click on GETTING STARTED and also on TUTORIAL.

    1. [WATERFORD] Admin message to AOL users
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. If you can get this message at all...AOL is having problems between a possible site down and getting Rootsweb back on their spammer list AGAIN! Mail to AOL is bouncing and when it does the Rootsweb computer MAY/probably will automatically unsub you as they cannot deliver messages to you. There's nothing Rootsweb or I can do about it. If you do get unsubbed, no matter how many times I might re-subscribe you, you will be unsubbed again after AOL bounces more messages. ONLY AOL CAN FIX THIS. If you do get unsubbed, contact them. 3. The detailed genetic study of one of the first farming communities in Europe, from central Germany, reveals marked similarities with populations living in the Ancient Near East (modern-day Turkey, Iraq and other countries) rather than those from Europe, the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD) at the University of Adelaide said in a news statement about the research. http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/news/chiefeditor/2010/11/asian-invaders-showed-european.html and http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/11/101109172344.htm and http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.1000536 That study indicates that early farming man [Turkic based language] traveled West. Another study involving DNA and a bit of lingistics indicates that the hunters, whose language was different [Indo-European based language], were moving East at the same time in the same areas. http://www.turkicworld.org/turkic/60_Genetics/Klyosov2010DNK-GenealogyEn.htm It seems to make sense that as land was turned into farmland, the game would be driven away forcing the hunters to migrate. Both DNA signatures are found in Europe today. The Turkic group is R1b, which constitutes much of the Irish DNA. Janet

    1. [WATERFORD] More 1641 Depositions
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. Having looked at my one Deposition that relates directly to my family in the right place, and having talked to another person, the Depositions have a lot of information within them that doesn't cross-reference anywhere. Within the Deposition there is a placename and other surnames that do not appear in the Deposition title. I don't have the time, but it would be an excellent project for one or more of you to read the Depositions for your county and post the placename and other surnames to the list referencing the Deposition title involved. Even if you just did a few a day, the project would not take all that long, particulaly if several of you get together to do the county. Maybe we can ask Christina to post the cross-references on her website. Otherwise we will ALL have to read each and every one. Janet

    1. [WATERFORD] White Paper: Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally
    2. Ray Marshall
    3. Gene Eastman, Eastman’s On-Line Genealogy Newsletter October 21, 2010 Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally I have written several times about the advantages and disadvantages of storing records digitally for many years, both your personal records as well as the holdings of major archives and records repositories. Now Gary Wright, an employee of FamilySearch, has written a definitive whitepaper on the subject that explains the issues involved with digital archiving. He describes in detail the pitfalls of digital storage of priceless paperwork and of old family photographs that have been digitized. As he explains, if done right, digital archives will last for decades. If done wrong, they may not last three years. I had a chance to read this whitepaper a few weeks ago when Gary circulated it amongst a number of people in the industry, asking for our comments. I told Gary at that time that he had to publish it on the web and, when he did, to please let me know the address so that I could inform the readers of this newsletter. After all the comments were in, Gary did exactly that. White Paper: Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally is now available on the FamilySearch.org web site at https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/White_Paper:_Preserving_Your_Family_History _Records_Digitally <https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/White_Paper:_Preserving_Your_Family_Histor y_Records_Digitally> I would suggest you read this whitepaper and consider the information within it carefully. Then forward copies to all your genealogy friends, society members, and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. I think every genealogist as well as every person who has heirloom documents and photographs in his or her possession should read White Paper: Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally at https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/White_Paper:_Preserving_Your_Family_History _Records_Digitally <https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/White_Paper:_Preserving_Your_Family_Histor y_Records_Digitally> White Paper: Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally >From FamilySearch Wiki Gary T. Wright, October 2010 While gathering family history records over the years, you’ve probably been preserving them physically. So why consider preserving them digitally now? This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of using digital preservation to both augment and enhance the preservation of your family history records. It also explores solutions to the challenges, identifies what types of family history records are suitable for digital preservation, and summarizes what is required to get started archiving digital records. This paper is available as a PDF document <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/Personal_Archiving_White _Paper_8_Oct_2010.pdf> Print or share this paper with others <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Personal_Archiving_White_Paper_8_Oct _2010.pdf>

    3. List, Does anybody have connection to the Naven, Cooney, Crotty, Somers surnames in the Stradbally area? I was seeking Naven data and got lucky with an obituary. My gg grandfather James Crotty was a pallbearer at Ellen Naven Somers funeral in 1901. James' mother was Johanna Naven Crotty. Ellen Naven Somers lists her parents as Patrick and Johanna Cooney Naven. Ellen was the wife of Edmund Somers, most of their children were born in Waterford. Son of Ellen and Edmund, Patrick Somers, applied for a passport and listed place of birth as Stradbally, County Waterford. Another son also listed Stradbally as his birthplace. I'm pretty sure my ggg grandmother Johanna Naven Crotty and Ellen Naven Somers were sisters. The second oldest Crotty daughter is Johanna, possibly after Johanna Cooney Naven. A Crotty grandson was also a pallbearer on the Somers obit. All lived in Worcester, MA. The Navens and Cooneys are fairly new surnames for me and Stradbally is a very new town for my many Waterford ancestors. I'd appreciate any pointers. Also does anybody know if Waterford has any plans for joining some of the other counties and putting their records(Baptism/Marriage) online at sites such as IFHF? Thanks for any help. Helen

    1. [WATERFORD] A great example
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. I have to thank Gay for posting the following obit which is a great example of looking for your ancestor in unusual places: Washington State, USA The Northern Star, Snohomish City, Washington Territory - 13 Jan 1877 Died, in this town on Monday morning last of consumption, Thomas McManus, a native of Tipperary, Ireland, aged 57 years. “Old Tom” as he was familiarly called, first came to this coast in a whaler in 1836, He returned to New York in 1838, where he joined Wilke’s Exploring Expedition in which he arrived on Puget Sound in 1840. He has, until within a few years been constantly in Government service, in naval vessels and revenue cutters. But poor Tom has come to his final anchorage at last, and his soul has gone aloft. – Portland Townsend Argus Here we have a lad of only about 16, and from a county in Ireland that is nowhere near the ocean, arriving on the west coast of the US by 1836. He has probably left a short trail in NY and the lad has probably been in Newfoundland and many other places along the east and west coasts of the US and Canada, and he finally settled in a Washington port town. I wish we had more information of the Irish mariners because they really got around the world. I found one with my favorite surname dying in Maine in the late 1600's in a Probate record. We often forget to look for the records [few] of the fishermen when we are searching for how our ancestors arrived where they did. Looking at any records in port towns might give clues. Janet
