    3. I've let the list get quiet while Rootsweb got its house back in order again, but it is TOO darn quiet. Let's try a rollcall and see what happens. Tell us who you are looking for now, your brickwall, your latest success, your questions, or whatever else my be on your mind, genealogically speaking only. [If you are getting more mail than you would like, write me directly and I can put you on "no mail" for a while and you can read the mail from the archives.] A huge sports complex and casino has been approved for No. Tipp in Two Mile Borris, although the State law has to be changed first to allow casino betting. There will be a monster size hotel there as well. This should be interesting. The Queen has been here and President Obama has been here; both visits were exciting, and we seem to have a small revival of the "troubles" in No. Ireland at the moment, which I hope is just a symptom of the economic downturn and nothing else. 2. Chapman, Eileen
    3. My great grandfather, John J. Farrell was born in 1843 in Waterford and was one of eight children living on Barrack Street with his parents, Peter Farrell (1815)and Elizabeth (Donovan)(1820). He came to the US in 1864, fought in the Civil War, lived in Brooklyn and married Ellen Lonergan(formerly of Cashel)(1853). I have not been able to find any information on the parents of Peter, Elizabeth or Ellen. Nor have I been able to find out what became of John's siblings, Martin(1850), Frederick Francis(1847), Johana(1845), Mary(1841), Brigid(1838). Baptism records show another Mary(1838) and another John(1840)( I assume that they passed at a young age). I was thankful to get baptism records from Waterford Heritage. I'd love to find my missing family and would appreciate any help. Please double-check subject line & snip your messages when replying. 2. Wanda Crawford
    3. Hello to all, I'm new to the list and am searching for Crawfords. One of my 3x great-grandfathers, William Crawford, came from Kilmacow (only a few miles from Waterford City, in Kilkenny). He enlisted in the British Army in 1815. His regiment (the 68th) was sent to Canada in 1818, and when it returned to Ireland in 1829 he and his family remained in Quebec. William's father may have been John Crawford, who came to an unhappy end in the 'serious incident' of 1793 in Wexford. William's wife was Elizabeth Birch/Byrch, who may have been baptised in Clonmel, South Tipperary, in 1796. I have thoroughly researched this couple on this side of the pond. One or the other brought a peat stove made in Waterford to Canada (Elizabeth and children, William and Henry, followed the 68th to Quebec in 1819). I'm now looking now for 'leads' in Ireland. Since I'm planning a research trip there in September, I would welcome suggestions as to helpful spots to visit in the area of Waterford City. 2. I am searching for the name of Coleman. His cemetery stone I found in 2008 says he is a son of Waterford. There are baptismal records for his children - but my guess is that he transferred these records over to County Cork when they moved there. Johanna O'Neill was his bride. William Coleman was their youngest son who was my Great Grandfather. But I cannot get past Jeremiah. A wonderful person over there in Ireland did tell me that Johanna was a niece of a Fr. Peter O'Neill, who was somewhat famous and there is a book about him. Here is a link to some of the images of the family and of Jeremiah's cemetery stone in Illinois where they settled. _http://www.rattieworldocomfort.com/genealogy/Coleman.html_ (http://www.rattieworldocomfort.com/genealogy/Coleman.html) Make sure to click on the link for the stone. The story of how I found it and Johanna's will amaze you. Mary D. Jarman Karr In a message dated 6/21/2011 10:17:17 A.M. 1. [WATERFORD] Roll Call - O'Connor
    2. Bob Gallagher
    3. Greetings, I am sending this email at Janet's request for a roll-call. This is my first posting to this mailing list, although I have been a member for a few months. I am looking for information on an O'Connor family that may have resided in Waterford City in the 1840's approximately. Thomas and Ann O'Connor are my gg-gradparents. According to information I have, they ran a bakery. They had two children: one boy, Martin, and a girl Bridget(?). There is a family story that the O'Connors actually originated in County Roscommon and moved to Waterford. I have not been able to confirm that story. Martin is my great-grandfather. He was born on 11 Nov 1841 in Waterford. He emigrated from Ireland about 1858 (according to the 1900 US Federal Census) and entered the US probably in Norfolk, Virginia. According to a family story, he served for one year with the Confederate Army during or just before the Civil War. I have a copy of the Loyalty Oath signed by him in 1864 in Norfolk pledging loyalty to the Union. The next documentation I have is his naturalization certificate issued in Westchester County, NY (outside New York City) in 1868. He then joined the U.S. Army at West Point, New York in December 1872. He remained a soldier stationed at West Point until his retirement in 1903. He had one deployment during his career of which I am aware: to Cuba during the Spanish American War in 1898. According to certificates filled out after his death, His widow, Catherine Elizabeth (Farrell) O'Connor, stated that he had had a sister he left in Ireland and never heard from again and her name may have been Bridget. Another family story states that she became a nun (nfi). I have no further information regarding Bridget(?). I do not know what caused Martin to leave Ireland, but surmise it may have been a traumatic family event, perhaps the deaths of his parents. Unfortunately, I have no information to confirm or deny that guess. I would appreciate any information anyone may have on this O'Connor family. Bob Gallagher Surprise, AZ USA Bobgallagher@cox.net

    1. Re: [WATERFORD] Let's try a rollcall FLINN / FLYNN
    2. Looking for the Flinn/Flynn family from Waterford or Wexford. Oldest known relative: John Edward Flinn, b. 28 March 1842 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford...but have been told this family may have come to Wexford from Waterford. To date the following is the closest clue I have to a connection to the birth of a John Flynn/Flinn; this may or may not be the correct "John Flinn" of County Wexford, Ireland ... A Certificate of baptism is on file at the Cathedral of St. Aidan, Enniscorthy, Diocese of Ferns, County Wexford, Ireland that states the following: "According to the Register of baptism kept at the Cathedral, Enniscorthy, JOHN FLYNG son of EDWARD FLYNG & JOANNA MURPHY was born on the xxxx and was baptized according to the rites of the Catholic Church on the 28th March 1840 by Rev. N. Codd. The sponsors were: JOHN LEONARD & MARGARET MURPHY."

    1. [WATERFORD] Murphys in Spain
    2. J Dean
    3. Hi everyone, I just joined the list thanks to Janet Crawford's wonderful work on the early Waterford marriages and births. Her work made it possible for me to find several other Murphys who were part of the family of John Murphy who went to Spain. "My" John Murphy was born on 27 April 1738, the son of John Murphy and Catherine Elliott. Thanks to Janet I found John Murphy's brothers, Matthew and Henry and his sister, Frances. I have quite a bit of documented information on John Murphy after he went to Spain and Gibraltar. If you or anyone you know is researching this family, I'd love to connect with you or them. Thanks, Jan Dean New Orleans, LA

    3. I can only base this on my own knowledge but if it is a Chapel you seek, it may not have been able to marry or baptise people, Chapel were generally covered in as much they were known as Chapel of Ease where prayers could be carried out, but not the major things. A lot of these Chapels existed within Mining communities, as Miners and mining is a subject I have researched heavily, I was very interested in following the people who ended up at Bunmahon and surrounding area, as I was trying to ascertain where the miners from Co Wicklow went to after their mines failed, and it appears that some did end up in this area also. Also it may help if you were to give the Surname of the people you are seeking then those of us who have sources may be able to check the name out for you. By the way I am happy at any time to look at my sources to assist anyone as long as they realise that I cannot create the impossible, and I can only look. 3. My gggrandfather, Denis Sullivan, was a copper miner in the Bunmahon/Knockmahon Area and the kids were Baptized, circa 1835--1844, in Kill Parish. In 1846 Baptisms were in Stradbally because mine employees were no longer supported in Kill or Newtown Parishes, and they went to Stradbally to get food during the famine. Our Lady of Mt.Carmel was Kill Village church at the time. If you find out more please let me know. 3. Liz, I think this conversation came up on the list many years ago and as far as I can remember no definite conclusion was reached. However, I believe Kill was mentioned but the most likely candidate seemed to have been Ballylaneen; about six miles north of Knockmahon on the R677 road. GPS position on Google maps is: 52.172984,-7.398992 I can't find any reference to records but there must be something possibly with the Parish Priest. It think Ballylaneen is now under the jurisdiction of Stradbally Parish. 3. Hello List I’m looking for Catholic churches, late 1840’s, near Knockmahon which would have served people in the mining community living (from Griffith's Valuation) very near to what is today the junction of the R681 and R675! St. Mary's, Saleen, Bunmahon, converted from a Temperance Hall to a church in 1854, is therefore too late for my purposes. The only other churches that would seem to fit the bill are Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Kill, with records starting from 1797 or Faugheen Chapel - which is considerably nearer to the area I’ve identified on the map. Does anyone know the dates of the records for Faugheen chapel and if these records are available? (Neither the Waterford Heritage Centre not the Waterford County Archive list record holdings for Faugheen Chapel) Thanks, Liz
