Hi All, I'am new at this and need help on researching the Foley family. My Greatgrandfather Thomas Foley was born in 1842 in Waterford, Ireland. Thank you, Judy juddee@clinton.net http://www.clinton.net/~juddee
To see if there are descriptions for RC records for other counties go to the IGW home page and click on the county name .... if the RC records are done it should be listed there. Diana did most of them before she gave the pages to Fred and the rest of us to maintain. If they are not listed I would suggest emailing the host for that county and ask them. Like me with the Waterford page, I knew they were there somewhere but they were not linked to the page, so you may have to bring that to their attention. By the way the records are now linked to the Waterford page .... didn't take as long as I thought! Abbeyside is just next to Dungarvan... a small bridge separates them. In this day of urban spread, they practically are the same community. Thanks to Maura for all of her diligent work... and informative information so far! Mary
Here is the url for the Roman Catholic records for Waterford http://www.worldgenweb.org/ireland/waterford/waterrc.htm right now they are "lost" so to speak, but within a day or so you will be able to access them from the Waterford home page if you lose the url, they are not linked to anything right now. Ok, I'll help break the ice. I am currently waiting for some basic information from the Waterford Heritage Center [or whatever it's called ;-)] But in the meantime, I'm wondering how many people are researching the surname McGrath? My grandmother was Mary McGrath, b 1857 in Co. Waterford. She emigrated to the US sometime around 1880 with her siblings: William, Martin, Andrew, Patrick, and Margaret. My mother tells me she once heard that at least one other (perhaps 2) siblings came to the US at the same time but, after a period of time, contact with them was lost, despite the fact that they lived on 15 miles from here. That was a digression. Both parents appeared to have been dead. William and Martin were police officers in New York City. William retired as a deputy inspector in 1928. He died a year later. His wife's given name was Isabella. I don't don't know her maiden name. Patrick settled in Monson, Maine. He was married but I don't know if there were children. Andrew, it seems, from gleanings from old obits I have, lived on Long Island. My grandmother first settled in Hamton, Vermont/Granville, New York where she met and married my grandfather, Thomas Lawrence O'Brien. Their first child, Kathryn Mary, was born in Hampton in 1884. They proceeded to have 8 more. In 1916 they moved to Albany. What I am looking for are: 1) ancestral history in Ireland 2) possible distant cousins in Ireland 3) descendants of Patrick, Andrew, Martin, and Margaret (William's 2 sons appeared to have died childless -- again from obits I have) Maureen O'Brien Albany NY http://www.solas.net/obrien/
Stradbally is about 20 miles up the coast north of Dungarvan , so I would say that is close, can't find Abbeyside listed on the map anywhere in Ireland, it could be a village or town not listed on this map. But those two are definitely in Waterford ! Anyone know about Abbeyside? don't feel bad about not being able to find your grandfather's death record in the US... I have a photo of my grandmother sitting at her father's grave, and can't find a death cert or even the name of the cemetery (all that is on the back is Grampa Wilson's grave- helpful huh?)... however, do you do any work at your FHC (Family History Center)? I have not tried this yet, but people rave about something called AIS or Accelerated Index System. It is in the microfiche drawer and I have seen it at ours but as yet have not had time to investigate it... it is supposed to be an index of deaths in the whole US (I think some countries too but am not sure) so you can search by surname in an entire geographic area like New England or the south. People say they find all kinds of people there that they had no information on.... so if you go to your FHC ask them to explain it to you and maybe you can finally find his death cert. Has anyone on here used this and maybe could tell us about it? Hi All; anyone that knows their way around Ireland, I need your help. Is Abbeyside, Dungarvan and Stradbally Parish, Waterford are they close together ? and are they in the same county? Thank you in advance. John E. Vail jvail@brandywine.net
If you are interested in obtaining information on what ship your people came on to the port of NY, you may want to check the Helpful Hints page I am in the process of developing which can be reached thru the IGW home page (url below nametag). What can ship passenger lists tell you? Who came and when. Their age and occupation. After about 1896 they tell you a LOT, where they were going to and their address, exactlly where they came from (town and county ) how much money they had with them. Before forms were standardized the ship companies only had to list name, age, occupation and country of origin, however I have seen about 2/3 of the time on the "Irish" ships that they wrote in the county of origin in a blank column. Plus, it is really moving to see the manifest with your ancestors name on it, and to have a copy in your book. A step by step guide for searching films yourself is on that page. I broke it down into easy steps so its not too intimidating. I will be doing other ports soon (when I have some time). Also the link to History of Castle Garden/Ellis Island is done, and the email addresses of NARA branches. If you have not gotten naturalization papers for your people (men only before 1923) that is a good way to try and pin point a year of arrival. Within the next two weeks I will have my own copy of the Famine Immigrants book and will be able to do lookups in it. I am currently searching 1885 arrivals to get a bit of needed info on my great grandmother Mary Ellen Gough from Clonmel Tipperary to Brooklyn...... and it really can be done. SInce we have just started , and have gotten more new members today (we are up to 47 now!) we may need to clarify what this list and its members can and can't do in order to help everyone best..... It is very unlikely that people on this list (including me) are going to have a way to access any specific information on births, marriages or deaths of specific people in Wateford. The reason is we would have to have access to the registers either in person or on microfilm, so unless someone would happen to have that film available to them, that is a long shot. Of course someone COULD be researching the same family, so by all means post that info. What is the best is to tell us who you are looking for, what you want to know (which so far everyone seems to be doing) but what people are leaving out is what have you already searched? What did you already do? If you have already searched say the 1901 census for info on your people, tell us that so no one recommends something you have already done. Remember that tying in to a certain place in Ireland is really tough, and will not happen overnight. This list can help you, and point you in the right directions, but you are not going to find all the info you want on the internet. I sure wish we could.... it would make my life a lot easier with my nearly impossible lines!! Keep writing those good queries and I am sure we can try and help everyone. If you have not already done so, you may want to check into the Catholic Church records available for the parishes in Tipp and Waterford you are searching. The lookup page at IGW http://www.worldgenweb.org/ireland/lookups.htm may help you find the parish. Nenagh is the parish for Tipperary, I was not able to find the parish for the location in Waterford definitely in my Ryan book (Irish Records).. it looked too close to the border of several for me to say for sure. some of you just starting to try and find info on your people in Ireland might want to check out the FREE Online genealogy classes (there is one for Ireland) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~genclass/index.html This explains a lot of the basics of what is available and how to get started. Then basically you do as much as you can with the resources you can access at a Family History Center or NARA or whatever you can find basically, and then you consider sending to the Heritage Centres in Ireland for help. I have used both the Tipperary and Wateford ones and have been pleased with them, tho Tipperary did not have my records they told me that and did not charge me, and Waterford did confirm to me that they in fact had the records and how much it would be (which I did not find unreasonable as most European countries' archives regulary charge over $200 and you don't know what you get, and its not in English you have to get the report translated). OK OK I am flogging myself with a wet noodle. Lori Hoffman changed the url recently and I gave you the old one... here is the correct one (I checked it) http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/cdlist.html and just because, here is another one, Ancestral Findings - Free Lookups (this is a commercial site, not volunteer based) http://web.mountain.net/~wfmoney/cd/ Sorry! Maura ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maura Petzolt Mobile Alabama USA mpetzolt@webtv.net ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ McCarthy, Hogan, Gough, McGlynn, Wilson (Ire>Brooklyn), *additional names* Petzolt, Herzog, Dehmel, Franke, Silhavy, Nechasek, Jankovich, Mazalik
The url of Lori Hoffman's CD Lookup site is http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/cdtext/html You can ask for lookups from any CD listed on this site (just follow the directions on the top of the page). For those of you searching in the NYC area for those who left Ireland and went to the NYC area you will need to go WAY down to the bottom and look at CD 318 (for the 1860 NYC census) and CD 287 (I think) for the 1870. Happy Searching. Hi Ruth, don't worry, today we are ALL new here! Do you have any information on if they came together to New Orleans? Did you get the ships passenger list for the arrival or did that info come from another source? Have you gotten a death certificate for either James or Mary that tells you (hopefully) what their parents names were? If you are sure that James and Mary were born in Galway (and did not just emigrate from there) you could contact the Galway Heritage Centre for help, or possibly search some records yourself at your local Family History Center. Happy Searching! One of the reasons I wanted to get this list going now is that I will be spending August in the area with my family and am already planning on doing a lot of searching in the Tipperary/Waterford area. Most of the family that I know of are buried in cemeteries in the Cahir to Clonmel area of Tipperary, but I will have access to my cousin's car and intend to search around whatever I can find. I also plan on spending a lot of time at the Waterford Heritage Centre, various local libraries and maybe even the National Archives in Dublin. So if any of you want to try and get some information together by July, maybe I can help you all out while I am there!!
