Can anybody advise me what would be the nearest cemetry? Myriam (Australia)
There was mining on the coast of Waterford in an area called Knockmahon which is partially in two parishes, Kill and Stradbally. These are the modern names. The ancient parishes are Stradbally and Ballylaneen, which translate into the modern parish of Stradbally, and the ancient parishes of Rossmire, Monksland and Kilbarrymaiden which translate into the modern parish of Kill. I have lots of mining relatives from that area and they are mostly from Bunmahon and Templevrick where the mines were active from about 1824 until the late 1860's. Many of the miners emigrated at that time. Nancy
Haven't found any connections on this list yet, but you never know! I have one name interest in Waterford dating back to 1721. Rev Thomas FRANCE bc 1670 d1721 was precentor of Waterford Cathedral, his son was Nathaniel FRANCE precentor of Cloynes, and Freeman of Waterford 1721, whose eldest son again Nathaniel (but not proved) may have been a Royal Navy surgeons' mate on the ship Rupert, died Plymouth St Andrew 1812. So if there is any one out there? Anne
Looking for James Welch from Waterford Co. He was born around 1850 as was his wife, Bridget Roberts. I have not been able to find them prior to their arrival in the US. After coming to the US around 1868, they settled in Ishpeming, Marquette Co, Michigan, USA and finally in Ironwood, Gogebic Co., Michigan. On the 1870 and the 1880 US census he was listed as being a miner. Is there a place in Waterford Co. where a miner was most likely to have lived? Could someone have lived in Waterford and worked in a Cork mine? Any clues will be appreciated. James & Bridget were Roman Catholic and I'm wondering if there is any clearinghouse for RC parishes in Waterford or if I need to contact every single parish to find from whence they came. Thanks for any help! Kate Moore Minneapolis,MN USA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail! http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/
Just joined this list with a bit of hope! After years of just knowing "somewhere in Ireland, possibly Mayo" I found on the 1901 Census that G'Grandfather John SULLIVAN was born in Waterford in 1837. Also looking for wife Mary CARTY abt 1844 and daughter Margaret 1859 - sometime after daughters birth they came to Liverpool and settled. What should I do now? Any advice much appreciated. thanks in advance Susan in Surrey CARTY;FITZPATRICK;FLYNN;MCGOVERN;RICE;SULLIVAN

I have some. MARY COLEMAN married JOHN MORRISSEY, around 1810, probably in the RC Church in Killea, Gaultier Barony, County Waterford. There are COLEMANs listed in Griffs for Kill St Nicholas, Ballynabola, MARGARET, and Ballycanvan Big, JOHN, County Waterford, Killea Parish. If you see any connection let me know as Mary was my Great Great Grandma and tracing this crowd is understandably difficult. I am searching for the grave of Matthew Power, a navy pensioner, who died on Monday, 29th June 1942 at 2 Morgan Street, Waterford. The death was registered by his widow, Jane Power [nee Curtis] on Wednesday 1st July 1942. Jane Power (nee Curtis) subsequently went to live with her married sister, Mrs Alice Gibbons (nee Curtis) in Thomastown, County Kilkenny. If anybody has access to a Waterford newspaper that gives either a death notice or an acknowledgement, this would probably give the name of the Cemetery in which Matthew Power was buried. I have tried all of the appropriate sources but to no avail. Thanks for any help that may be available. Dr Con Power
This is a reminder that list rules state that off topic posts are not to be sent to the list.... and that does include holiday messages, poems etc etc. These lists are just too big with too many people to send holiday greetings etc. If you feel the need to share those things, send them privately to those you have developed "friendships" with. An alternative is to put a brief Christmas greeting in your signature line. Also... unfortunately we all are dealing with these various viruses going around now... I would strongly urge everyone to check their software and keep it updated to keep themselves "clean". Yes, the lists are slow now.... people are baking, shopping and otherwise occupied. Things will pick up again when Santa finishes delivering all those new computers on the 25th <g> Have a nice holiday, Maura Listowner SHAMROCK, CountyCork and Waterford lists <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

I would be grateful if someone on the list could tell me if the 1901 Census for the Portlaw area is available in Waterford. Many thanks, Brendan Jones.
Dr. Con at [email protected] writes: << Does anybody know where is "Corrignore" or the meaning of that address. It was a one word address. I have a photocopy of the original entry in the Register of Ballybricken and the writing is very clear. >> Dr. Con, My first thought was the "nore".......but of course the River Nore doesn't quite make it south enough to reach Co. Waterford. Is the writing clear enough to differentiate between an "n" and an "m" ? If this could be a "more", then the location could be Curraghmore, over near Portlaw. I would guess that the "Corrig" part is one of many casual spellings/pronunciations of Carrick, Carrig, Corra, Curra, Curragh, etc. (I realize that these may all have different meanings, but that doesn't necessarily prevent an entry of a mis-heard name going awry.) By the way, there are several Curraghmores in adjacent Kilkenny and Wexford counties, as well. I am cautious about the use of the sole name, Corrignore, however. For a location so far away from the city and church site, I might have expected there to be mention of a parish, too. Perhaps I'll browse around a bit closer to Waterford City. My grandfather, William POWER, gave the place name "Corrignore" as his address when he married Anne Meany in Ballybricken Church (Trinity Without) in Waterford on 7th September 1868. Anne Meany, daughter of James Meany, gave her address as Barrack Street. William Power's father was Matthew Power. The witnesses at the wedding were John Doyle and Mary Connors, and the priest was Rev Thomas McGrath. Does anybody know where is "Corrignore" or the meaning of that address. It was a one word address. I have a photocopy of the original entry in the Register of Ballybricken and the writing is very clear. Thanks for any help that may be available. Dr Con Power

Hi To All List Members And Maura As an early Christmas present to everyone interested in Waterford History we have published online the entire contents of Desperate Haven. This book is 400 pages in length and covers the history of the Dungarvan Poor Law Union and Famine. It took myself and Martin about a week to publish online. Putting the book online has doubled the size of the site. The book pretty much covers the entire area of West Waterford. We hope you like the addition to the site. You can access the new section of the site by clicking on Desperate Haven on the home page at www.dungarvanmuseum.org Museum News: We have recently received some very generous donations. The museum would like to thank everyone who donates artifacts etc to the society it is much appreciated. The Dungarvan Observer has started to print a photo from the museum archive each week. In January The Dungarvan Leader will commence publication of different archive photos each week. The Museum has finally got an Internet connection courtesy of Waterford County Council and the County Secretary Peter Carey. Once the museum staff are familiar with the system you should find queries are answered more accurately and promptly. For some unknown reason tripod (who I got my backgrounds from) messed up the Helpful Hints page by putting their logo all over the backgrounds, and I have gotten several questions from listmembers and others about it as that page gets a lot of traffic. So, right now, there is a no frills version up, gray background, but at least it's readable :) Different backgrounds and new Hints to be added as time and personal issues allow over the holidays. Dr. Con Power mentions the Power list. Does anyone know the address? Luke Foley
I am making what might be one last attempt with this posting in the hope that somebody on the Waterford List or on the Power List might recignise the William Power [British Army] or the Power family that I have named. I am endeavouring to trace a step-uncle of mine, William Power, and I will summarise, for ease of reference, what I know about this William Power. 1 William Power born 28th April 1875 at Waterford City, off Barrack Street. 2 His father was also William Power and his mother was Anne Power [nee Meany] 3 He left home in Waterford on 8th June 1890, and presumably joined the British Army immediately as a boy of 15 years. 4 He served in South Africa at some early stage of his career. 5 He is reputed to have been in a "Royal" Regiment, but this is anecdotal. 6 In 1890, a Troop of the 15th King's Royal Hussars were in the Waterford Cavalry Barracks and they enlisted 9 Recruits. Could "my" William Power have been one of them? The description of him in uniform in Waterford at some stage between 1910 and 1920 is of him having a black pillbox hat with gold braid around the bottom and across the top. He was in a uniform not common in Waterford at that time, and the children referred to him as "the button man" presumably because the jacket had many buttons. 7 William Power is reputed to have served in the Army until about 1920 [perhaps a total of 30 years service]. 8 He is reputed to have been commissioned at some stage. 9 The last know of him in Waterford is that he visited his step-sisters in Australia in the early 1920s and then settled in South Africa [whether or not he went elsewhere from South Africa is not known]. 10 It is not known whether or not he ever married. 11 I am afraid that the above does not contain many specifics. He is, however, the only one of his generation whom I have not traced and I would like to at least try to find his details. I have full life details and full service records of his elder brother, Matthew Power, who served in the Royal Navy and who joined at Devonport on 15th June 1886 as a boy aged 15 years.Matthew Power lost a leg as a PO1 at age 34 years and was pension until his death at age 71 years at 2, Morgan Street, Waterford City. 12 I have, of course, been in touch with the Ministry of Defence but records were destroyed by enemy action in 1940. I have also been in touch with the Public Record Office and with a number of Regimental Museums. Additionally, I have commissioned searches by two experienced military researchers. All this has been to no avail. My last hope is that somebody reading this might recognise something in it. Best regards Dr Con Power Dublin
I have been researching Collenders of County Waterford. I can trace my roots back to the beginning of the 19th. century, maybe to 1756. I found the death register, 1864 - 1901 which Waterford County Council has on line a great help. Perhaps you may e-mailed me to discuss the Collender ancestry.
