Hi List I noticed a question on ST. Marys Church on the list. It's possible that the answer may be found at www.dungarvanmuseum.org . If the answer is not on our web site you could e-mail the museum at [email protected] . The museum web site has recently been brought in-house ie questions are answered and articles are now posted by museum staff. My brother and I (the creators of the site) will still continue to monitor the site and do occasional articles. The museum welcomes any questions of a general historical nature on the West Waterford area. We do not provide a genealogy service however. If any list members have photographs of West Waterford pre 1950's of landmarks, events, shop fronts etc. we would be interested in receiving a copy for our archive. Could someone assist me by telling me where Convent Hill is located? Is it a town or village within the county of Waterford, or is it an address within the city of Waterford? Many thanks Louis Doody
List, I am seeking some information concerning St.Mary's Catholic Parish in Dungarvan. I am aware that the present church was built in 1828, right after Catholic Emancipation. Does anyone have knowlefge of what parish preceded the building of the church? cica (1780 to 1828 ) If so, under what church name could the baptismal records be accessed, if they are available? And where could they be accessed from ? Where did Catholics attend Mass in the 1780-1828 period, in Dungarvan ? Any replies would be appreciated! John,I'm not sure exactly where Knockanore is but I quote from a book by Brendan Kiely 'On 29th July 1848 a large force of heavily armed Tipperary constabulary were beseiged by a rebel force, led by Smith O'Brien,at the Widow McCormack's house at Farrenrory near Ballingary.....After some casualities the attack was broken off. Most of the leaders including Smith O'Brien were soon captured but even so the harvest witnessed a Second rising.'..this second uprising occurres in September and in Brendan's book he says..'O'Mahony's northern division began well when they burned the police barracks at Ahenny...but they failed to overrun Glenbower barracks and after their repulse they did not press on to Carrick.' Knockanore is in the extreme West of Co. Waterford, on the Blackwater River about midway between Youghal and Lismore. Ahenny is about 50 miles away in a straight line; Ballingary is more distant That could be possible if James Hennessy joined a group and traveled where they went, although that would be more likely if he were unmarried at the time. Since he was married with at least two small children, my first thought was that he probably continued to live at home and that whatever brought about his being shot happened closer to Knockanore. If anyone here knows of any activity in that Youghal-Knockanore-Lismore area around 1848 that could have resulted in his being ³shot by the British², I would appreciate your help. --John Hayes
Mike, at the site below go to County Library, then to civil Register: Death Register and you'll find lots of Donovans. Happy hunting! Julie http://www.waterfordcoco.ie/
In an interview today, I heard for the first time of a family tradition that James Hennessy, of Knockanore, was ³shot by the British² and that his son William, at the age of 5, was sent off about 1850 with friends to Canada, from where he later immigrated to the US. There was no more specific information as to how James came to be ³shot by the British². My recollection is that there was an uprising in Co. Waterford in 1848. Does anyone know if that involved activity in the western part of the county, near Knockanore, that might have resulted in James being killed in a battle or being executed and whether there would be any records of this? Any other thoughts on why James might have been ³shot by the British² would be appreciated. --John
Now that I have discovered that my gg grandfather Thomas Donovan was one of the Waterford Rebels of 1849 and came from Sruh ,near Cappoquin,(thanks to Brendan Kiely)I was wondering if there are any indexs that may be available for local cemeteries that may help unearth further ancestors. I have just "found" my GGGrandparents via the wonderful Waterford County Council site - Thomas NUGENT born abt 1801, died Ballyduff 19 June 1881, and his wife Johanna born abt 1806, died Ballyduff 29 Jan 1867. I'd love to know if they had any children other than my GGrandmother Mary NUGENT who married William SULLIVAN, or if there are any descendants still living in Ballyduff as I hope to visit there in May. I am wondering if anyone is researching these families. I have info about a Roger Gadsden who married Margaret Welsh 30 May 1844 in Liverpool, ENG. She was the daughter of John Welsh, pig dealer. John's father was John Gadsden, merchant. The connection with Waterford is a Richard Walsh that was a tenant in the Parish of Trinity Without. This is a very far fetched connection but there might be one between John Welsh the pig dealer, Richard Walsh, tenant, Michael Connolly, tenant and hopefully with the Gadsden and Nash Provision Merchants. I don't know if this rings any bells with anyone but it was worth a posting!!! Judy
I am new to family history and I am researching the family name of RANCE. I understand they may have come to Waterford from France at the time of the French Revolution, around 1993. Furthermore the name Rance is not a common surname in Ireland. Can anyone help. Terry
