    1. [WAT] HALLIHANS OF WATERFORD COUNTY
    2. Pat Lavato
    3. > I am looking for the parents of JAMES HALLIHAN who was born about 1809 > but I do not know the town. All his naturalization papers here in the U.S. > said was that he was from Waterford Co. He married HONORA HENNESSEY maybe in Ireland, maybe in Canada where they were by 1845, at least. If it is true that in Ireland they usually named their first sons for their Father, then James Father might be John (is that Sean in Irish?) They had 3 sons & 2 daughters. The first daughter I find, Elizabeth, was born in Montreal in > 1845. The rest of the children-John, James, Mary & Lawrence were born in > Burlington, VT. > Pat >

    3. Yesterday I announced new Surname Interest pages on my Cork and Waterford websites... and my mailboxes are overflowing..... However, I had to return about 1/3 of submissions as they were not set up correctly... submission guidelines are clearly stated on each of the pages, and it's essential that they be followed. So if you got a message returned, please resubmit, and if you have one to submit, please do so in the correct format. 3. Hi Sheryl You can e-mail Dungarvan Museum at [email protected] . Nearly all of the books on Waterford's history have been read by the curator or a member of staff, they would be happy to give a short run down of contents and accuracy. The next chapter to be published on the Museum web site should be Lewis's Topographical Study. We have extracted all of the descriptions of every town land in Waterford. 3. Has anyone on the list read R.H. Ryland's History, Topography and Antiquities of the County and City of Waterford? I'm hoping that someone on the list can tell me if it's worthwhile to purchase. I've recently read "The Ancient and Present State of the County and City of Waterford..." by Charles Smith. Mostly observances of natural history, the only Catholics mentioned in this book were St. Patrick and St. Columba. It wasn't at all what I had expected. Thanks, Sheryl

    2. Maura
    3. I have just added Surname Interest pages to my Cork and Waterford pages of the IrelandGenWeb project. If you have a surname you are researching from either county, you may want to have it listed there in order to connect with other researchers (there is also a homepage listing on each site if you have a homepage, surname listings do not have to have a homepage). To have yours listed, please go to either the County Cork page http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/corkigw or County Waterford page http://community.webtv.net/waterfordroots/waterford, follow the link to the Surname Interest page and follow the directions given. (Note - please send listings to the address given on that page, not to me at this address) Happy Searching, Maura <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

    1. [WAT] SLINEY, Dungarvan, Co Waterford
    2. Alice Erickson
    3. Have just had some info which might help us sort out SLANEY/SLYNEY - I know I had a couple of answers to my query on this list. Apparently spelling used in IRL was SLINEY. But I have used SLYNEY throughout to save my poor head! John SLYNEY, farmer of Dungarvan, IRL and Mary MOUNTAIN ere parents of my first SLYNEY in Australia, John SLYNEY. Dungarvan Catholic baptismal records for 1812-1832 show John and Mary (Ellen) had 4 children - Thomas, bap 1817, Brigid, bap 1821, Bridget, bap 1826 and David, bap 1830. No marriage seen for John and Mary but bap records show place of abode as Coolnagour, a farming area about 3 miles south-west of Dungarvan, Co Waterford, IRL. Seems Thomas was later called John, my first in Aus John SLINEY and Mary MANSFIELD were married in Church of the Assumption (now known as St Mary's) Dungarvan, 9 Jun 1839. Witnesses were Thomas Mansfield and Mary (Margaret) Christopher. On Aus immigration records, 1839 John shown as Ploughman, Mary Farm Servant. Do these details help with connection to any of those who answered my queries on this list earlier? Would love to hear from you again. Alice.

    1. [WAT] Gentle reminders - please read!
    2. Maura
    3. Hi all, I am sending this message to all the lists I run in the hopes that it will help everyone, whether we've been doing this for a long time, or we've just started...... I get private emails all the time asking questions which I don't mind answering, but the answers are given on the pages I have made, so that must mean not everyone is -using- them.... :( My Helpful Hints page in particular was developed because those were the questions I answered on lists all the time (and I just got tired of typing them all the time). So please..... 1. Write a good query! There are plenty of times I read a posting and for the life of me I can't figure out what that person wants. Read the section on How to Write a Successful Query on the Hints page. 2. The SHAMROCKROOTS page has a section called Mailing List Basics. That section explains it all..... it also has a link to the archives page for all Rootsweb lists if you need to do a search. 3. We also have a Helping Hands project associated with the IrelandGenWeb located off the SHAMROCKROOTS page. Check it out, or join it! 4. We also have a great Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project for listing any tombstone **not in Ireland** which lists a place of origin in Ireland. I've listed a few there that I have found in my searches of cemeteries, they aren't even my relations but maybe it will help someone. That page has a search feature where you can search for all the submissions of a certain surname or county. Use it, and if you run across (or trip over!) any tombstones which list place of origin, consider posting it there. Hope this helps..... 1. [WAT] New Hint added on 1930 US Census
    2. Maura
    3. I have recently added a new Hint to my Helpful Hints for Successful Searching page dealing with the 1930 US census. This census is about to be released to NARA branches (LDS should have it soon), and will be a challenge to search as there is not a soundex for all states (only some), and there are no book indexes. The hint deals with the challenges of this census. The url of the Hints page is http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints Since this is an Irish genealogy list, please do not have lengthy discussions on here about this census, as many international subscribers may not be interested. If you need specific help, join a list for that state or city, and ask your questions there for assistance. 1. [WAT] Re: Digests as attachments
    2. Maura
    3. If you are getting any digest sent by Rootsweb as an attachment, it is your isp turning it into one. Rootsweb does not accept or send out attachments. Some isps turn digests into attachments if they are over a certain byte size... you need to talk to them about resetting your computer so it doesn't happen. I can't help you with this, and Rootsweb will tell you just what I have, that it's your isp, not Rootsweb. 1. [WAT] Knapsey / Napsey
    2. Hi I am searching for any trace of my ancestor James Knapsey. He was born in 1823 and was transported to Tasmania in 1844 for stealing two watches. He was tried in Lincolnshire, But his native place is listed as Waterford, somewhere (I can't read the next word on his convict documents). Family legend has him as coming from England, Ireland or possibly Germany. The only Knapsey's I have found are all direct descendants of this man. I have found some Napsey's in USA and this gave me some hope that the name may be real. I would appreciate any information about whether there is any record of Knapsey's or Napsey's in Waterford, Ireland. Thanks Patti Vallance Warrnambool, Australia [email protected]

    2. G & D Pianta
    3. I am searching for ancestors KING and FITZGERALD who came from Waterford and Kilmacow Kilkenny (just across the border). James King married Anty (also possibly called Mary) Fitzgerald. They had Thomas, James, Margaret, Mary and Catherine. Thomas married Mary Donovan in Parish of Ballinarougery, Kilmacow 1829. Their son James bap Portlaw 1836 born Carrick Road where Mary (Thomas' mother) rented a house. Sister Margaret worked in the poorhouses in Waterford and was selected as a female famine orphan - aged 18 to come to Australia 1849/50. Thomas and Mary followed in 1854. I believe brother James went to Prince Edward Island abt 1846 or before.. Based on the info on Margaret as being an orphan, it is presumed the parents had both died, poss from the famine. Searching for any information on the Fitzgeralds and King families who remained in Waterford. Denise Pianta

    1. [WAT] Benjamin Morrison, Chicago, Illinois - sponsor for Michael Christopher Power to USA in 1911
    2. Dr Con Power
    3. I am seeking information about Benjamin Morrison who had an address at 542 West 70th Street, Chicago, Illinois in the early 1900s. My reason for seeking this information is that Benjamin Morrison "claimed" my late uncle, Michael Christopher Power, when my uncle emigrated to the USA. My uncle left Cobh (then Queenstown), County Cork, Ireland, on 26th February 1911 on board the Cunard liner, SS Franconia. The ship arrived at Ellis Island on 7th March 1911. On arrival at Ellis Island, my uncle gave his last address in Ireland as 6 Emmet Place, Waterford. His next of kin was his father, William Power. My uncle, Michael Christopher Power, was 22 years old at the time [born in Waterford on 24th December 1888]. According to the ship's manifest, my uncle paid for his own transportation and he had $25 in cash. He gave his previous occupation in Ireland as "clerk". My uncle later changed his name to Powers by adding an "s" as was done by many of the Power surname when they went to the USA. Four of my uncle's sisters [my aunts] went to Australia and they were "claimed" by two of their aunts [my grand-aunts], both of whom were married and therefore used their married surnames. I suspect, but I have no proof, that this Benjamin Morrison, 542 West 70th Street, Chicago, Illinois, may have been married to a Power woman, an aunt of my uncle's and a sister of my grandfather. Alternatively, he may have been related to Michael Christopher Power in some other manner or perhaps he was not related at all but was a friend from Waterford. That is the sort of link that I am seeking. I will be grateful for any information. Thanks. Dr Con Power

    1. [WAT] Irish culture
    2. Maxine Driscoll
    3. As an American I am trying to read up on Irish history/culture/customs - to help my research. If anyone can help me with answers to the following questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Three questions 1. If 7 minor children in a Catholic family were orphaned in 1900 in Waterford County (Lismore/Cappoquin/Kiely's Crossing area), would there be formal custody proceedings before being sent to live with various relatives? If so, where would these records be? In a court of some kind? 2. In 1900-1910 was it rare or common to send girls to Darlington, England to attend boarding school? Probably a secondary or "finishing" school - learned academic subjects, plus piano. 3. The few clues I have make me think that there might possibly have been a little money left to these 7 children. Would a will from 1900 (from the same Lismore/Cappoquin/Kiely's Crossing area) be available somewhere? My reading/research makes me think that it might have been lost in 1922. If the will survived, where might it be found? Thanking you in advance. Maxine Driscoll
