Sheila, Its important not to overestimate the importance or significance of townlands. They are VERY small sometimes a few fields in size, the term 'town' is a bit confusing. Because of this they are often not used by locals. I for one would not know most of the townlands near me or right next to me unless I checked an OS Map. Very often they are only known because of an important building etc that exists on it. i.e Glencairn and the Abbey. Locals will often use a street or area address which covers a wider area relative to the townland. I have never heard of Castle Richard near Tallow, but that don't mean it doesn't exist. I suppose what I really mean to say is that is possibly enough to know that they came from Tallow. Its all about geographical scale Hope this helps Willie At 08:19 25/04/2002 -0400, [email protected] wrote: >Sheila at [email protected] writes: > ><< Townland Glencairn, Civil Parish Lismore and Mocollop. hello Tim, Are you living in Ireland??? I had a 5th grt Granfather Name of Patrick Brannon prob b abt 1725 to 1733??? I am looking for. He was mar to __???? and had John Brannon ( Irish John) in Winchester, Va USA in 1769 on . He is said came to America after a falling out with his father, Patrick, came into Pa in 1763. was abt 18 yrs old. He was b 1745 in Stradbally , Queens , Ire. and also had a bro name of Thomas who came into Saco, Maine in abt 1785??? He was b 25 Dec 1755 in same place but in a small town abt 15 miles from where John was born. Thomas was the father of the famous Samuel "Sam" Brannan of Gold Rush days in California in 1850's i and in San Frabsisco, California. He was b in Saco, maine by Thomas's 2nd wife after 1st died there. Sam said his dad was an old man when he was a little boy. Frank, I have the same problem with ship passenger lists in NY as you experience. However, I got lucky. I found my people in the1855 NY State Census in New York County and it stated that they had come in from Ireland in 1853. That narrowed my search to a year, give or take a few months for miss counting on the date of the census taking. After a few months of examining ships manifests, I found my great great grandparents, Michael English and Mary (Sullivan) English on the ship "Marmion." They were older(mid50s) and were travelling together, so I am sure they are the ones in the list. Mary died of cholera on the voyage and was buried at sea. This explains why she is not buried with her husband in Calvary Cemetery in New York. I always thought she died in Ireland. The ship Marmion embarked from Liverpool. But I believe it was usual for these ships to stop at Queenstown on the way out. My English family came from the Tallow area, not far for them to get to the port of Cobh. I have since found a Michael English as a small property holder in Griffiths in the Townland Glencairn, Civil Parish Lismore and Mocollop. I always thought they were from Barracks Street in Tallow Town, as there is a Patrick English there in Griffiths, but now it seems I should be looking for them around the Blackwater River. In 1840-50, Tallow RC Parish reached up that far. The baptisms of their children is recorded in Tallow Parish, CastleRichard. I am having trouble understanding the geography. I see Castle Richard interchanged with Glencairn. Anyone know the difference? Sheila MacAvoy Block

Can anyone tell me about an elderly couple that lived just inside Mount Melleray Gates, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, up until a few years ago? His name was Michael Sweeney and his wife's name was Betty. I would like to learn about them, i.e.: Where they are buried, where did they come from and who their parents and relatives were/are and any stories of their life. We met them while on holiday and immediately fell in love with them. Michael, was my husband's grandmother's close relative and we were blessed to have found them via a wonderfully helpful lady, on the last day of our visit to Ireland. We corresponded sporadically, due to his failing eyesight, and we regret so sadly that we did not record the stories about his family that he was so eager to tell. Hopefully, some of you listers will be able to relate to us some of his and Betty's life. Thanking all you wonderful listers in advance, God Bless, Betty Prendergast MA, U.S.A.
[email protected] writes: << as the listing address reads "Kileenagh Knockanore" is that how I would address the envelope? If I just add Waterford County, Ireland, is that enough? >> I'm sure this would be adequate. Knockanore is the "town" with the postoffice, and Killeenagh (note two "els") South is adjacent to it - Killeenagh North is the very next townland. These are not very populated townlands, so I'm confident that just plain "Killeenagh " in front of Knockanore would be sufficient. By the way, there's also a nearby Killeenaghmountain townland, but they're all adjacent. If you are curious where this area is, it's about 7 miles N. of Youghal near the west bank of the River Blackwater and just south of its confluence with the River Bride. You might look at Ira Glazier, ed., <The Famine Immigrants: Lists of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New York 1846-1851,> 10 vols.to date. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1983. It has an index. William H. Mulligan, Jr. Associate Professor of History Murray State University
Have you looked at the WATERFORD COUNTY COUNCIL website. There is a Death Register there and some detective work may reveal possible connections, e.g. the death of James Mooney on 21 Feb 1883 was reported by his sister, Anne Byrne. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ellen Byrne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 22, 2002 1:53 PM Subject: [WAT] Mooney > My ancestor Eliza Mooney came to NY about 1846 with her sister Mary...they were listed as shoe binders. > It is believed they were from Waterford Co. Not being able to afford the hefty fee the WHC charges, I thought I might try writing to possible relatives I found listed in the "Golden Pages." My question is: as the listing address reads "Kileenagh Knockanore" is that how I would address the envelope? If I just add Waterford County, Ireland, is that enough? My grandmother said they were from Knockanore, but I find them in Griffiths Valuation in Kileenagh. Are they next to each other?
I've hit a brick wall in my search for a great grandfather's date/place of arrival in the U.S. >From other records I've located, it would appear that he emigrated during the 1845-1858 time frame and most likely arrived at Manhattan Wharfs/Castle Garden, NY. Unfortunately there are no passenger list indexes for most of the above time frame and going through the LDS microfilms for each passenger ship arriving at NY for the busy 13 year time period would be horrendous. Pehaps I could reduce the number down if I knew which city/port was most likely his Waterford port of departure during the 1845-1858 time frame. Were ships able to leave from the city of Waterford or were other costal cities used? Would anyone be able to assist me on this question? Thank you, Frank
My ancestor Eliza Mooney came to NY about 1846 with her sister Mary...they were listed as shoe binders. It is believed they were from Waterford Co. Have never been able to learn anything about their family. Any help would be appreciated. Ellen Byrne

Hi Tim I can't help you with your actual query but I can inform you about some forthcoming developments with the Waterford co. co. site. www.waterfordcoco.ie We (Deise Design) are currently mid-way through designing the new Co. Library web site. As you may know the death registers and all the other databases are produced by the Co. Library Service. These databases will migrate to the new site in September. There will be two major consequences of this move. 1) The silly java applet that you currently have to use will be removed. This should make the site way more easy to use and result in less technical glitches etc. The new look for the databases will be amazon.com ish. 2) Detailed contents and how to search pages have been produced. Many of the databases have blank periods or need to be searched in a certain way to obtain useful results. The new library site should be way more intuitive to use than the County Council site. You should also see the appearance of more databases prior to the launch and gaps in the existing databases should be filled in. Hopefully it will go from a pretty cool site to a very cool site :) Yours Willie Whelan Deise Design & Dungarvan Museum ========================================================================== William Whelan | Déise Design | http://www.deisedesign.com | Phone : 086 2748377 " Our core product Déiseditor © allows organisations to publish information to their web site in a fast and cost effective manner. Reposting this because I just found James death record in Burlington, VT & it has him as JAMES O'HALLIHAN! I am looking for the parents of JAMES HALLIHAN who was born about 1809 > > but I do not know the town. All his naturalization papers here in the U.S. > > said was that he was from Waterford Co. He married HONORA HENNESSEY maybe in Ireland, maybe in Canada where they were by 1845, at least.
