    1. [WAT] a "tip" to add to my success story
    2. Maura
    3. I've been reminded by some reactions to my success story about not giving up (which I sent yesterday) of a -VERY- important point.... Many people change email addresses often, and if you made postings and someone wants to connect to your old address, it will be a problem.... I always advise people to post a "reply" message to message board postings they made (not just a new message, which will not be threaded in the archives), stating their new email address. For mailing lists, a message of something like "for the archives, my new email address is __ searching ____. " (don't just send a general "here's my new email" message - again it wont' get picked up if someone does a search on the surname/place from the archives) And , while I'm at it, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give out your address or phone/fax number in an email or posting -- you'd be surprised at how many rotten people are out there and have equipment to find those things and steal identies etc. (I've noticed some of you have your home address/phone or business address/phone in your signature line --- NOT a good idea!) Hope this things help someone..... 1. [WAT] about 1930 US census films
    2. Maura
    3. I don't know if anyone has posted anything about this or not... hopefully it will help someone. I used to volunteer at my local FHC (and sort of unofficially still do) and have been asking the current director to find out exactly when the FHL in SLC will have the full set of 1930 US census films to rent/view (currently only available at NARA branches, and some scans online for a fee on certain sites). He said SLC told him they would be available this fall - did not know if we would have to call SLC for film numbers, but thought (based upon something else) that by then the online catalog and/or catalog CDs in FHCs were going to be updated. For info on the 1930 census, what it contains, what states are soundexed (mostly southern) see the section on it on my Helpful Hints page, url below. If you are going to be searching in a state not soundexed (like NY) it may take you from now til the fall to find the right ED # for your family. :( Maura <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

    1. [WAT] Why you should never give up!
    2. Maura
    3. This is a great example why you should never give up searching, and why you should make sure your information is listed on mailing lists and message boards..... Most of you know I've been working on my McGlynn's in Brooklyn (from Ireland c. 1830) who I am desperately trying to connect with 2 Farrell families I find living next to the McGlynns, serving as godparents etc (I'm trying to make this short, for details see http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt/genealogy , choose Paternal Irish) but can't find anything definite to prove it beyond any doubt. Many of you also know of my elusive GATHLENY search, as Catherine McGLYNN married Nicholas Gathleny in Brooklyn in 1863, moved around the US via the Army and ended up near me in Pensacola FL. That's been a total dead end ( pardon the pun) as Gathleny is evidently a mangling of some other name, and I haven't been able to connect with current relatives. Well, a little over a week ago I got an email from a Gathleny cousin who was mentioned in an obit I had, but could not find online, or anywhere for an address where they live in Texas. Basically I was about to give up when I got this email saying, "we did a search and found your info, and gee, all the names match. We need to talk on the phone". Two hours on the phone later, and bingo! I had all the stuff she didn't know, and she remembers all the major people in the research, and some current cousins still in Pensacola..... and the kicker was when she said she always heard the Farrells were connected to the McGlynn side! More evidence, only now, I have someone to work on it with me! And someone who actually -knew- my great aunts and uncles I have only "met" on paper! So the moral of the story is.. get your info out there. Put it on messages boards, mailing lists, do your own webpage. Search engines find this stuff, and maybe no one is looking for your people right now, but eventually someone is bound to.... and who knows where it will lead you! Hope this helps/inspires someone.... 2. Thought I would repost my interests: I am having a terrible time finding details of my greatgrandmother in Waterford. Her name was Celia Melay (although on marriage certificate her name is listed as Bridget- there are enough other corroborating details to make my believe it is the same person.) She should have been born abt. 1871-1873, I believe in Waterford. Her father was James Melay and her mother's maiden name was Ellen Welch. Does anyone have any info. on a Bridget or Celia Melay? Or anyone with the name Melay or Welch in Waterford, Ireland? Thanks for any help!

    3. Hi List, I cannot tell you how many Waterford names there are in Newfoundland...a ton to say the least. If you are missing siblings etc. of your gp or ggp and have been looking in the states to no avail I urge you to check out the archives of the Newfoundland mail list I continue to run across names thru my NFLD search that I see on this list: MANSFIELD,PRENDERGAST,GORMAN,SULLIVAN,KELLY, POWER, HENNESSEY, SWEENEY, DUNPHY the list is endless. Many Irish emigrants set out for the States but landed in Canada first. You may know your line went from Waterford to Boston/NY but can't find records of your lines arrival in the States..I think you will find some missing generations in Newfoundland. Some of my Irish ancestors even had their nationality in US census/Ellis Island records as English because they were coming in from Canada.

    3. While we're on the subject.... Margaret Sweeney (d. 1889) married Michael Coleman (d. 1881) dau Julia Coleman (d. 1937) from Lismore area. Also related Michael Coleman (emigrated to Lowell, Mass) and Lena Coleman Houghton (emigrated to NY). Margaret Sweeney Coleman's nephew, Thomas Mahoney, and niece, Ellen Mahoney Nolan also emigrated to Lowell, Mass, Tom in 1867, Ellen in 1899. Ellen was the second wife of Daniel Nolan. A dau from his first marriage, Elizabeth Nolan, emigrated to NYC abt 1883, married Daniel Seward (possibly also from Lismore area). When their 5th dau was born in 1904, James English was her godfather. Supposedly they knew him from Ireland.

    1. [WAT] US Vet's Admin Records
    2. Maura
    3. I'm sending this as a reminder to all my lists of a Helpul Hint on my page (url below) and as proof it works! If you are not in the US, it still might help you if you have a US relative you need info on.... Twice now I have sent for records from the Veteran's Administration - once for my grandfather (which provided much information and led me to the McGlynn line in Brooklyn from Ireland which I previously did not know about), and then for my dear Dad (because I needed info on his first marriage and no one was talking about it -- so I had to get the info another way). Figuring this marriage info was in his VA claim (because I remembered a large "discussion" about it one summer), I sent a letter just asking for his VA file, giving only his name, date of birth, date of death, and some info I had that I thought might be helpful (addresses we had lived at, that he fought in the Pacific Theatre etc). Where did I send it? In each case I just sent it to my regional office, which for me was Atlanta since I live in Alabama (even tho they didn't live there, that is what I was told to do). The regional office then sends to whatever office holds the file. (In my grandfathers case it was NY, in my fathers case it indeed was in Atlanta since he died here in Alabama with me, and that is where the last correspondence of his death cert was ). Now in my grandfather's case nearly 3 years ago, I got nearly 300 pages of info on his Spanish American war record, his marriage certificate (bingo!), records of war injuries (very detailed), his death cert, my grandmother's application for pension, ending with her death certificate. Got all this within a month. Now in Daddy's case, the usual "Petzolt curse" was involved, as I sent away and never heard anything for a year. So I picked up the phone and called around in Washington DC til I got the right office, and finally found a very nice gentleman who said the man in charge had died right around that time and much was left at loose ends, so he started the paper trail for me again. It has been almost exactly 2 months since then to yesterday when I received nearly 200 pages of info in my mailbox. In my fathers case, it was very interesting because many of you may know many WW2 records were destroyed in a fire, but since his copies were in his VA file, I have them, including some with burned edges! I did get the info on his first marriage, details of his war injury since he was claiming disability, and other things I had anyway (but might help someone who did not have these things) like his funeral expenses, application for a flag on the casket, death cert, even my own birth certificate as he was claiming me (then) as a minor child. Did I mention all of this is FREE? Yup, free. I do not think you have to be related directly to that person, as technically it goes to the FOIA (freedom of information act) Office of the VA. So if you have someone who may have gotten VA benefits, or even just applied for benefits even if they got turned down (because that's in a file somewhere too).... this could be a goldmine of information. And in my case, my Dad would never talk about his war injury, and now I finally know the details. So take a peek at the Helpful Hints page (as I often remind people ) there are sections there on what military records are available, and how to get those great VA files (a well kept secret, and one I expect eventually will be something we have to pay for.... due to the boom in genealogy... so take advantage of it). And by the way.... another "hint"..... when you write for anything to any office or library, use the term "family history" not "genealogy". For some reason, "family history" gets better results. Hope this helps someone..... I know it's certainly helped me, and made me feel closer to my Dad. 3. Susan, I don't know for sure. In the grave where the English family buried their dead (Calvary Cemetery in NYC) is Michael Sullivan born Ireland about 1795, died on Blackwell's Island in the Alms House of TB on June 28, 1859. Mary Sullivan died in October 1853 on the Ship Marmion out of Liverpool bound for NY. Age was given as 53. She is therefore not in the grave with her husband Michael English as she was buried at sea. I am only deducing that, because of Michael Sullivan's age and that he was buried with the English/Coleman family, that he was Mary Sullivan's elder brother. If that is true, your John b. abt. 1835 was born too late to be related to my Mary Sullivan b. Dec 4 1799. I realize that Michael Sullivan may have been an uncle or a cousin. But keep asking. You never know where the answers will come from. Sheila MacAvoy Block

    3. Realize the family of Coleman is rather broad in Waterford and Cork, but can't help piping up to recent posts. My Mary English (b. abt. 1834 Glencairn, Waterford) was daughter to Michael and Mary Sullivan. A Mary Sullivan, daughter of Michael and Mary Coleman was born in 1799 and baptised in Tallow RC Church. She is the right age to be mother of my English family. Mary English emigrated to NY in 1852 and married John Coleman in NYC in 1853-54 (no record found yet). He arrived in 1853. I have a hunch they were cousins. Any of your Coleman's connected to this English family? Sheila MacAvoy Block
