    3. Hi List, My gm Josephine Prendergast O'Gorman who was raised in Lismore continued to correspond with her sister in law Kathleen O'Gorman Cahill for decades after emigrating to the states. On the outside envelope of many of Kate Cahill's letters the phrase was always written "SHAMROCK WASHED AND FREE OF ROCKS" wondering if anyone else has heard this phrase and whether it has political connotations? P.S>looking for Kate and John Cahill's descendants they may be interested in their gm letters and may have the letters of my gm. Joanne [email protected]

    1. [WAT] McCarthy and Hankard, Tallow
    2. SusanJennings
    3. Hi everyone I am researching the McCarthy and Hankard Families of Tallow. I have James McCarthy, who married Brigid Hankard in the later 1800s, also Patrick Hankard and Mary McCarthy who were sponsors at the christening of Patrick McCarthy. I also have James and John or Jack, Molly, Maurice and Bridget McCarthy. James and Brigid lived in Barrack Street, Tallow, and their daughters Molly and Bridget lived there until their deaths in the 1970s. James Jnr, Patrick and John all left Ireland to live in the UK. Maurice was killed in an accident or died young - I am not sure. I would appreciate any information at all as to whether there are any surviving relatives of the families. I understand that possibly a brother of James McCarthy senior emigrated to the USA, with his cousin, maybe, where he worked in steel works perhaps in Philadelphia or Pennsylvania. James senior was a runner, but I don't know if he was a messenger or athlete. Patrick served in the Southern Irish Horse Brigade in the F! irst World War. I would love to hear from anyone who may have some information. Thanks, Sue Jennings, nee McCarthy

    2. Maura
    3. In just over a year, the Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project ( a Special Project of the IrelandGenWeb and WorldGenWeb which began from an idea on the SHAMROCK mailing list) has 383 entries. This project is for transcriptions of tombstones anywhere -except- Ireland which list a place of origin in Ireland. You do not have to be related to them to list them, I listed a few I literally fell over while looking for my own family. Listing any of these may help others..... and it's our intention to help others by listing as many as we can. There are many listings from Australia, and many from different US states. The database is searchable by location, surname or other keywords. So during this summer or anytime you are searching old graveyards.... and you find one that says Ireland on it... please consider jotting it down and listing it with the project. **Please note, it -must- have a place in Ireland listed or it will be taken off the board. Also, it is not for -asking- for information, those posts will also be taken down. Directions are clearly given on the info page http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/tombstones Since it's a Special Project of the IGW (in fact it was the first) I hope all IGW counties will provide a link to this project. If you have any questions, please write to me personally. 1. [WAT] Waterford (& other) Wills and Admin bonds
    2. Maura
    3. I have just finished transcribing over 100 Wills and Administration bonds (when someone dies intestate) from LDS film #0100158. These are not the originals, but ones that someone found for his family/interests and typed up and donated to the LDS - since most wills of this period were destroyed by fire, it is helpful information. Many other places are mentioned, County Wexford , Dublin, Newfoundland, London to name a few. I do not have a search engine on that site right now, but you could use the FIND feature on your browser to search for certain places or names. Even tho I have listed them alphabetically (different from the original film), each listing has other names in it, wives maiden names, daughters married names. I had to put Power on a separate page as there were so many of them! You can find these off the Waterford IGW page, http://community.webtv.net/waterfordroots/waterford - it is linked there off both the Wills and Administration explanations and the Data page. Please do not send this message to other mailing lists, but feel free to send the url and an explanation to other county lists, and IGW hosts may want to link to this site if you find data on your county there. Hope this helps someone. 1. [WAT] RE;Kennedy/CT 1850's
    2. Joanne
    3. Hi Joan, I am fortunate that my great uncle Louis Anthony Kennedy wrote our family history down. At least to the best of his knowledge. I'm also lucky that these Wexford Kennedy's emigrated (or half of them) to Newfoundland which as an island of small communities facilitates research. Different than the Irish which deluged Boston and Ellis Island in the late 1800s it has been easier to track my ancestors in Newfoundland. Have you got this Michael Kennedy and Mary Healey connected to Waterford? Also if you know he was more than 140 years older than you..what is the birth year approx.? Also The names of his sons ( they might offer a clue to Michael's fathers and brothers names) Any idea on his occupation or whether he married in CT or Ire. WWW.CELTICCOUSINS.COM has some good info..even if you just plug in their last names you might come up with a record. They usually had like 10 children and while many of the sisters get lost there are always a couple of brothers that can be linked up. There are just so many of them~\ Just discoved "CORK SETTLEMENT" in New Brunswick with another bunch of Kennedy's some of which went to Maine, given the proximity. Sorry list, here we are posting about Kennedy's in US on the Waterford list. When mine were from Wexford. Maybe we should move this to the KENNEDY list Joanne

    3. Maura Petzolt just wrote that anyone with information for the site should clearly state in the subject line what it's about. I have had so many viruses because I opened up something that I assumed was from Waterford or Kilkenny and it was virus nonsense. I have deleted any number of messages, not daring to peek...So be sure to make clear in the subj. line that it concerns genealogy, or Waterford or some other definitive word. When the subject says "Gertrude" or "Arthur"and that's all, many of us erase it. Pam O'C.

    1. [WAT] Re: WATERFORD-D Digest V02 #71
    2. Joanne What a wealth of information you have about your Kennedys. Michael Kennedy married Mary Healy. Their two older sons were born in CT. in 1851 and 1853. The younger one was born in Wisconsin in 1855. I am sure Michael must have had siblings. You don't hear of many Irish families of that time with only one child. It is possible that some of their descendants are on the East Coast. Michael must have been pretty old when he had children. Even though he was my grandfather, he was born more than one hundred and forty years before I was. Joan

    1. [WAT] Reminders about Subject Line
    2. Maura
    3. Please remember that subject line is -extremely- important in your use of mailing lists... many people just look at the subject line to decide whether or not they want to read the post in the first place. For digest users, it is very important that you -change the subject line- from "Re: digest whatever" as that tells us nothing about your post. In general, the only things that should be in caps in subject lines are SURNAMES, first names and locations are in regular type. And using subject lines like "help" or some general thing also isn't going to get you much help. And if the post starts out with one subject line, but for some reason changes (like to a discussion of just one surname or something) then change the subject line to reflect that (i.e. SURNAME, was whatever) We want everyone to get all the assistance they can, and your use of subject line is the first step to getting to that. If you haven't already read the "How to Write a Successful Query" on my Helpful Hints page, that might help you also. To most of us who have been doing this for a long time, we cringe whenever we read the words "Looking for information on ...." Read that section and find out why..... 3. That's exactly where I'm heading. While my Kennedy line left Wexford early,,1807.. the story goes..2windjammers with two KENNEDY families left Rosslare Feb. 1807 for New Bedford MASS. The birth of a newborn son to Captain Nicholas Kennedy and Grace Young brought the first ship to put in at a Newfoundland port where the family settled near Harbor Grace, Carbonear at Conception Bay. The second ship went on and made it to Newburyport/Cape Cod in Mass. We believe these Kennedy Mariners continued to work along the North Atlantic coast as fisherman and of course much latter as transporters of prohibited cargo. A nice way of saying "bootleggers" Anyway, these Kennedy's were RC and the Newfoundland branch emigrated to Brooklyn in the early 1900s. I don't think it was just chance that the first ship put in at NFLD. they settled with Kennedy's who had been there prior to the 1790s. In addition, family lore contends that it was the 1798 Wolfe Tone uprising which led to the 1800 Kennedy emigration. Although it has also been said that there was nothing "infamous" about this branch other than they were extremely hard-working fisher folk. Nicholas, Terrance, William, and John are the preeminet names in this line as well as Patrick and Francis with almost every middle name Joseph. I believe their father (GF) or Uncle in Newfoundland (died 1790s) was Edward (Edmund) Kennedy. >>>> Have you considered a connection to John F. Kennedy's family---they were from Wexford and now there is an area to be visited with the place where they lived---only a little cottage, but--Kennedy/Wexford...you never know! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joanne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 1:02 PM Subject: [WAT] RE:Kennedy/ Clashmore

    3. Hi Joan Been on vacation. My Kennedy's were from Wexford, or may have just left out of there . they may have been from around New Ross and so I haven't ruled out Waterford or South Tipperary. Looking mainly for Edward, Nicholas, Terrance,William and John..circa 1790-1810.. but I am sure there were probably Michael, Patrick, and Josephs as well. What was the time frame for John and Michael?
