Hi everyone, I'm researching the VAIL family who came to Australia during the 1800s. I'm looking for connections to Catherine VAIL. born c. 1846 in Waterford, father William VAIL. She married Thomas (O) CONNOR in South Australia in January 1869 at the age of 23 and they had 8 children. They were Johanna, Thomas, Mary Ann, William, James Joseph, Michael, Edward Henry and Cecelia. Would anyone have any connections to these people? Would someone be able to tell me how I would go about searching for her birth certificate in 1846. Thanks Emily Pink Perth Western Australia

'"Roll calls" as such are actually discouraged by Rootsweb as it generates lots of mail with Roll Call in the subject line, which makes it harder for members to know what the email is talking about, and it also messes up the archives. However, you are always welcome to send in your surname interests, putting the surname in caps in the subject line. In our case, we have a surname interest page for Waterford, http://community.webtv.net/waterfordroots/waterford which you can check at any time to see if anyone is searching for your name or add yours to the list. Just follow the directions on that page if you are interested. Emily;List My aunt who just returned from Waterford...(here we go again)..well it was the Vails or Vales or Veales...who took her to our Prendergast place in Cappoquin. They are the relatives of a "Vail" friend of hers in NYC. My aunt does not have email but I will speak to her soon and see what other info she has, a contact etc. They were (of course) extremely helpful and delightful people! Joanne
Hello Listers I am interested in tracing the descendants of a Godfrey Herbert CAREW, born between 1879 to 1880, possibly in County Waterford, Ireland. His birth cannot be found in the GRO births index for England and Wales for the period 1879-1882. He died on the 14 January 1963 in South Harrow, Middlesex, England. I have recently discovered Godfrey to be linked with the maternal side of my family. I am also interested in finding the family of Maxwell CAREW, a Music Hall Artiste, who died in Brighton, England in August 1965. He was also born in 1881 and possibly in County Waterford, Ireland!! During Maxwell's career he had a double act with his brother (name unknown) and I wonder whether Godfrey might have been his brother or perhaps a cousin! I would like to hear from anyone who is familiar with either of these members of the CAREW family in County Waterford. Regards Gillian Cumbria, UK.

Hello, from another interested roll caller. My husband's grandfather, Patrick F. Prendergast was born in the area of Lyre, Lismore and his grandmother, Katherine Sweeney was from Crow Hill, Cappoquin. After looking over the baptism dates of grandfather and siblings, that my daughter and I copied from the church records in Cappoquin, I see the names of Catherine, Morris, Maria, Patrick and Jacobo O'Donnell, as God parents to some of the children of William and Kate. Prendergast. Other Godparents were Maria, Jacob, Patrick, David and Anastalea Morrissey. Is there any futher interest on Grandfather's kin? Willing to share what I have on them.
Roll Call on other lists is used as a posting of surnames from a particular area. In my case, within Waterford I am looking for families from the Lismore area near Cappoquin which for me would be the O'Donnells, Gormans, Prendergasts and possibly the McCArthy's and Coleman's. I am also looking for Cahill, Lyons, Cleary, and the Morrisson's nearby. All related to my family should likely be within 10 miles of Lismore. I have seen "Cappagh" written in my grandmother's letters, this could be "Cappa", No? and also "Fern Ville." Would love to know more about your O'Donnells. Joanne
Joanne's post mentions "roll call" and lists O'Donnell from Cappaquin. my family is part of the O'Donnells from Cappa nearby. Any clarification on the "roll call" statement?
Ran across this today, wanted to pass it on: "Descriptive Reviewof theManufacturing and Mercantile Industries of the City of Brooklyn and the towns of Long Island and Staten Island" Richard Edwards, Editor - Historic Publishing Co. 1883. Mc (Sweeney) - W. Sweeney Saddle & Harnessmaker No. 77 Bridge St. Among the harness makers of Brooklyn, there are none who call more for our notice than Mr. Sweeney. At this establishment there is kept constantly on hand a stock valued at $2,000. Mr. William Sweeney has 3 hands helping him execute all orders given to him. The proprietor who was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1836 came to this country 34 years ago. the Last 12 of which he has been at the present location. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~blkyn/Business/Manuf.html "Descriptive Reviewof theManufacturing and Mercantile Industries of the City of Brooklyn and the towns of Long Island and Staten Island" Richard Edwards, Editor - Historic Publishing Co. 1883.
I have been told that I can obtain a copy of my gf's birth certificate from the county office of superintendent registrars . There are 2 registrars in Waterford....one in Waterford city at St. Patrick's Hospital and one at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dungarvan. It's likely Dungarvan since they were from Cappoquin Lismore. Does anyone know the cost or if the registrars office has a web site? Thanks Joanne
Genealogic Karma , Went to Miami's local FHC center, the facilities are minimal and to make photo copies of film you need to find what you want on one machine and then transfer the film to another machine to prevent the only copier from overheating. I am a spoiled child of technology and don't know what I will accomplish there...the only morning hours are 9-12 Tues. and even then I have a 2year old in tow (sweet pea that she is). At any rate, seeing Newfoundlands Probate Records from 1832 on was neat, they are typewritten very legible and maybe I'll bring the digital camera next time. I got so excited when I noticed a few early ones that mentioned Ireland placenames that the first interesting one I found I immediately put it on the 2nd machine to print, even though it wasn't "One of Mine," a copy of the 1840 Will of Michael MORRISSEY of Dungarvan, Waterford (late of St. John's Newfoundland) Well, it has paid me back 10 fold. I just spoke to my Aunt who returned from a trip to Waterford and they were able to walk the ancestral lands in Lismore very near Mount Melleray and sure enough I have an Ellen O'Donnell of Lismore married to a MORRISON. When I get a chance I will contribute the full text. Some names mentioned: mother/brother/sister in Dungarvan: Catherine, Thomas , Margaret Morrissey Rght. Rev William Abraham Rev James Murphy REv. Hi List My Aunt's trip to Waterford was of course wonderful and too short. In Lismore, she said the graves were quite worn and unable to yield any names. True to Irish form many helpful distant relations came out to meet them and they were able to see the homes of both the Prendergasts and the Gormans, the first was abandoned and locked (there were supposed to be pictures in the attic from our relatives who passed on in the 1960s) anyway the Gormans have one of the most beautiful houses in the area and indeed are our cousins. They promised to go to St. Carthage's and get some tombstone photos. I was so excited on the phone I forgot to ask for their # and add. All I know is that it was very close to Mount Mellerary ROLL CALL CAPPOQUIN and surrounding areas: PRENDERGAST O'DONNELL COLEMAN O'GORMAN/GORMAN McCARTHY O'ROURKE COSTELLO MORRISSON RIORDAN CLIFFORD FEENIE LYONS CLEARY REID(Y) CAHILL O'BRIEN HEALY LYNCH MacNABOLA
