    1. Re: [WAT] GEARY FAMILY
    2. Pat Friend
    3. I have some GEARYs that ended migrated from Portlaw to Fall River. Don't know if this information is useful or not but here goes... Honora GRADY (daughter of Patrick GRADY and Brigid FOLEY) m. Thomas GEARY, 30 Jan. 1863, Portlaw, Co. Waterford They had the following children born in Portlaw: Walter A. (b. 18 Dec. 1863,d. 7 Aug. 1887 in Fall River) Margaret M. (b. 25 Dec. 1864, d. 27 Sep. 1885 in Fall River) Brigid M. (b. 15 Mar. 1868, d. 13 Nov. 1943 in Fall River) Patrick "John" (b. ca 7 Aug 1870, d. 4 Sep 1891 in Fall River) John L. (b. 10 Feb 1872, d. 22 Oct. 1960 in Massachusetts - married but no children) Thomas F. (b. ca. 22 Apr. 1874, d. 12 Jul. 1938 in Massachusetts) After they married, it appears that Thomas and Honora lived with her parents and siblings in Portlaw. All of her siblings had emigrated by the time her father Patrick GRADY died in 1876. Her mother emigrated shortly after his death. At that point it appears that the GEARY family moved to Carlow. Michael A. (b. Baganelstown, Co. Carlow 24 Sep. 1877, d. April 1965 in Massachusetts) - believe he married but haven't found marriage record - son Francis ended up living with his grandmother Honora) Mary (b. ca. Dec 1879, Ireland - haven't found birth record, d. 29 Mar. 1881, Fall River) Jeremiah J. (b. 19 Nov. 1881 in Fall River, d. May 1966, Brookline, Massachusetts) - married, five children Figure the family had emigrated by March 1881 but most likely after the time of the 1880 census as they aren't to be found in Fall River for the census - can tell from comments in city directories that Thomas GEARY died somewhere from 1885-1887 but I haven't been able to find a death record for him in Massachusetts or Ireland. The GEARYs who died in Fall River are buried in the same cemetery (forget which one). >Hello, > >I am re-posting my elusive family. PATRICK GEARY married to ALICE CASHIN, >about 1850 [place unknown]. 3. Accidentally deleted your message, hope you see this on the list. I am also working on ancestors said to be from Clonmel area that eventually wound up in and around Fall River. Between Ireland and Mass. they were in Newfoundland....I have run across both Geary and Cashin names near my people there. If you have not looked here for your missing links you may find something of interest, search the bottom of the page at Newfoundland Grand Banks site for "geary"+"Cashin" or either name by itself www.ngb.chebucto.org/ also found a will for John Geary whose wife Mary was in Boston http://ngb.chebucto.org/Wills/geary-john.shtml Godd luck!Joanne

    2. Hello, I am re-posting my elusive family. PATRICK GEARY married to ALICE CASHIN, about 1850 [place unknown]. Their "known" children were: Michael - 1854, Patrick - 1861, John - 1862, John - 1864, Richard - 1867, Mary - 1873...these children all came to Fall River, Massachusetts. The children all listed "Clonmel, Tipperary" as their place of origin, although I have not been able to locate any information on this family in Clonmel. I know that their were several GEARY families in Waterford, and wonder if anyone knows of this family or the CASHIN family? I think the family may have been from Waterford originally. Thanks for any assistance, Paula

    3. If you are using a business computer to get your list messages, please read this! If you go on vacation, please (temporarily) unsub from whatever lists you are on... those business computers send out "I'm out of the office" replies to whoever sends a message to you, and this can cause a real problem. I end up having to unsub the address because of this, and then get "why did I get unsubbed" messages..... Since a lot of people are taking holidays now, this is starting to happen every day. Please do this if you are using a business computer to get your lists. 2. Maura
    3. In response to the often asked "what does this nickname go to" etc questions that show up on lists, here is a suggestion given to me when I first started.... and if you are even halfway serious about genealogy you will need this eventually..... Buy a good, Baby name book. One that gives you meanings and nicknames. I bought this book for 3.95 years ago at some bookstore like Waldenbooks... there are others and I don't even know if this particular one is in print or not... but get one that includes nicknames and national variations Name Your Baby: origins, meanings, nicknames, famous namesakes by Lareina Rule isbn 0-553-27145-8 Having this book handy will allow you to get your answers from the book instead of asking lists (as those discussions tend to gravitate into "my family did this with the name" etc). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

    3. Janet was a fabulous inspiration to genealogists throughout Australia. It was her weekly newspaper articles in the Sunday Mail and free lectures to new "ancestor hunters" that got me started on my family tree that now has 3500+ names. 3. Thought I would pass this on - Janet did much for the genealogy world, notably helping with the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) indexes. --------------- Janet REAKES, noted Australian Genealogist dies at Hervey Bay aged 50 on 9 Nov 2002 - Obituary Courier Mail Brisbane (12 Nov 2002) It was with profound sadness that I have today learned of the unexpected passing of Janet, a prominent Australian Genealogist. Here she became an Icon, who in her relatively short lifetime, was also Internationally acclaimed for her valuable contribution to Family Research.   Not only was she renowned for her wide-ranging library of resources covering the many countries of our ancestors; but also was highly respected through her voluminous Publications, Media contributions and personal Genealogy Classes. She was quite a Celebrity across all States of Australia, also her outstanding skills were shared world-wide through her On-Line MyFamily.com Genealogy Classes. Janet regularly arranged groups to research in Salt Lake City UT, and was a very popular Tour Director. She was held in the highest regard by her Peers and over the years hosted quite a number of Conferences in Australia with leading overseas Genealogists as Guests of Honour. She died peacefully after a long battle with diabetes. Her Biography is briefly covered on the following website - http://www.angelfire.com/or/janetreakesgenealogy/biographical.html <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

    3. Please do NOT respond on the list (or to him for that matter, as that is probably his goal) to the recent messages sent by a strange person about visiting his website etc. That person had already unsubbed himself from this list. (I don't know if the messages got through to the Waterford list, but it seems he is spamming most of the Irish lists) In internet terms, that was a "troll", someone who just joins a group to start a problem. The expression used to deal with this is "don't feed the trolls", in other words, don't go for the bait, just delete it and ignore it. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt [email protected] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

    3. It has been a while since I posted last and I am wondering if anyone can shed any light on particularly the GADSDEN name. NASH and GADSDEN were in business together at one point, as bacon merchants/provisioners. Anne BRADLEY married Joseph NASH in 1815 in Holy Trinity Parish. Joseph was b in 1787 in England, Causeway Meadows Farm, Dodderhill. Anne was born 1798 in St. Patrick's Parish, Waterford. Anne's mother and father were James BARRINGTON and Elizabeth GADSDEN. Any help at all about the GADSDEN'S or the NASH family, would be greatly appreciated!!! They had several children and I would like to find out what happened to them. I have one child as Joseph GADSDEN NASH who died in 1876, b 1825. Please contact me if you can shed any light on this union.....Judy in Maryland, USA

    2. Joanne
    3. Sorry I started the "Roll Call." I did not realize that Rootsweb discouraged this as on other lists it has been helpful when trying to locate surnames in clusters. Of course posting your surname interest on the county web page is the proper place. However, I have had great luck in discovering "associated" surnames in particular localities such as baptismal sponsors, neighbors, and family friends by asking for a Roll Call. But I suppose this can be more effectively accomplished by putting townland or parish in the subject heading.
