Hi List, Apologies for cross-posting. On a Certificate of Arrival in New York the following is stated: Date of Arrival August 25 1925 Manner of Arrival SS Baltic VFP April 22 1929. The cert was issued in 1938. Does anyone know what VFP indicates? Many thanks. Brendan Jones.
Can anyone tell me how to get back copies of the Decies journal? Nancy
I am up against a brick wall. I am seeking information on the family of JOHN THOMAS KINSELLA (1990 - 1885). He was, supposedly, born in County Waterford. He moved to FISHGUARD in Pembrokeshire. His wife was MARY KELLY (1887 - 1928). I presume that they married in Ireland as I can find no marriage in the St. Catherine Marriages. John was employed as a fireman on the Fishguard/Ireland ferries. Can anyone help ? Thanks Michael G. Tucker -- Michael G. It's a long story, but as of a few hours ago, I no longer have access to the file on my hard-drive........which contains about 6000 letters sent to me (mostly from the Irish lists) and which I wanted to keep for future use/reference. I still have use of a similar number of letters which I have sent to various lists/individuals (and they are now backed-up....now that I know how to do it. One day too late.) If anyone out there is awaiting a reply from me, I'm afraid that you'll have to write again. Sorry. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
Besides trying to find more information on my ancestors, maybe someone can help me locate some descendants since my grandfather,GEORGE WHITMORE CARR, left IR. abt 1868 to live in Brooklyn, NY. George's father was WILLIAM PATRICK CARR, born abt 1821 in Co. Kilkenny, died abt 1861 (place unk). His children were GEORGE WHITMORE CARR( abt 1851 - 1921), born in Dublin. He married EMILY SMITHERS in 1873. Next was ANNA HAWTHORNE CARR, born 1852 in IR; then CHARLOTTE EMILY CARR, born 1853 in IR. Next, twins: ELIZABETH HAWTHORNE CARR and MARY MERIDITH CARR, born 1855 in IR.; then, EDWARD CHARLES CARR ,born 1856 in IR., and last, HENRY GREGORY DUNLOP CARR,born 1858 in Dublin. Perhaps some of their great grandchildren are still in IR. Any ideas for places for me to search will be appreciated. Patricia CARR McDonald [email protected]
William Power was my paternal grandfather. Anne Meany was his first wife and he married my grandmother when Anne died at age 38 years. I have been trying for many years to trace a descendant of this first marriage. Imagine my excitement when I recently saw that the first marriage and birth details of all 5 children of the first marriage were all recorded on the LDS Church website. There was a note in each case that the information was submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. I contacted the Church but their rules understandably prohibit them from giving me the contact details of the submitter or from passing on my contact details to the submitter. I hope that the submitter might be a member of this List and might now respond to me. Details of the family are given below. MARRIAGE. William Power (born 1843 per the LDS record but born 1845 per my family records) married Anne Meany (born 1845) at the RC Chapel of Trinity Without in Waterford on 7th September 1868. William was the son of Matthew Power, and Anne was the daughter of James Meany. The witnesses at the marriage were John Doyle and Mary Connors. Anne subsequently died at age 38 years on 1st November 1883. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE [1] Mary Ellen Power born on 16th September 1869. She died an infant on 14th June 1872. [2] Matthew Power born on 15th April 1871. He married Jane Curtis on 10th April 1917. He died on 29th June 1942. I have he complete life history. He left no children. [3] James Power born on 13th September 1873. He died an infant on 6th October 1873. [4] Alice Power, twin of James Power, born on 13th September 1873. She died an infant in March 1874. Interestingly, the name was spelled "Alise" on the LDS Church record and this is also how it was spelled in a note that I possess that was handwritten by my grandfather at the time of her birth in 1873. [5] William Power born on 28th April 1875. He left home in Waterford on Sunday 8th June 1890 according to a note handwritten by my grandfather. I have no other documentary evidence about him but I have a number of family anecdotes. The family story is that he married. As three of the other siblings died as infants and the 4th left no children, and descendant of this first family of my grandfather must therefore be a descendant of this William Power. I would very much like to contact such a descendant. I hope that somebody on the List may recognise this family and contact me. Dr Con Power [born at Gracedieu East, Waterford]
An excellent source for genealogists seeking Australian-Irish family information. The Tower Hill cemetery is near Koroit, Victoria. This part of Victoria, Australia was called "little" Ireland; "When visitors sought some quintessential Irish haven in Australia they seized on Koroit or Kilmore in Victoria. They look Irish: rows of low cottages dotted the land higgledy-piggledy, bent and torn hedges almost met together at the corners of farmlets, the main streets ran past ramshackle shops, plain pubs and knots of small men in cloth caps; Catholic church, convent, or school overlooked the town, and green fields rolled away over gentle hills where men bent low in furrows digging potatoes. These towns were early and unusual settlements." http://members.datafast.net.au/marrtronics/TOWERH1.HTM Vincent Le Plastrier Forest Lake, Brisbane, Australia "Et semel emissum, volat irrevocabile verbum" - Horace 65 BC - 8 BC ["Once released, a word flies and can't be called back"]
Hello, My name is Dennis Doyle. I live in New Jersey in the states just outside of New York City. I am looking for the roots of my family tree and I believe they lie in Waterford. According to family legend, my great, great grandfather, James Coughlin, was born in Waterford, Ireland around 1841. The only thing we know of his family is that he had a sister Mary. He married a woman named Bridget whose surname was either Henry or Morris. I know nothing of Bridget's family. I think they came together from Ireland and settled in the Trinity Bay area of Newfoundland Canada. James was a fisherman in Trinity so I assume that is what he did in Ireland. They had six children, Elizabeth (my great grandmother), John, Agnes, Thomas, Margaret and Frederick. James died in 1908 while living with his son Thomas in Brooklyn, NY. Bridget died in 1894 also in Brooklyn. I would appreciate any assistance or guidance from anyone as to where I might find out where in Waterford James and Bridget came from. Thank you all and have a very happy new year. Dennis
I am endeavouring to trace any references to this family. Father: William Power, born in County Waterford in 1843. William's parents were Matthew & Ellen Power. He married Anne Meany on 7th September 1868 in Waterford. After his first wife died, he married for a second time Mary Ellen Power on 4th November 1884.He died at 6 Emmet Place in Waterford on 20th May 1918. Mother: Anne Meany, born in Waterford in 1847. Her father was James Meany. She died in the Waterford Union Hospital on 1st November 1883. CHILDREN OF THIS MARRIAGE - ALL BORN IN WATERFORD. 1.. Mary Ellen Power born on 16th September 1869 and died on 14th June 1872. 2.. Matthew Power born on 15th April 1871. Married Jane Curtis on 10th April 1917. Died in Waterford on 29th June 1942. I have his complete life history. He had no children. 3.. James Power [twin of Alice] born 13th September 1873 and died on 6th October 1873. 4.. Alice Power [Alise in the LDS Church records] born on 13th September 1873 and died in March 1874. 5.. William Power born on 28th April 1875. He survived at least until the 1920s if not long beyond that date. I have no details of his life history other than family anecdotes. The various members of the family, except the eldest child, are listed in the records of the LDS Church with a note that the details had been submitted by a member of the Church after 1991. No other information is given regarding the submitter. There is a suggestion that information about the family might be available in the Ancestral File with the name of the submitter. On checking, however, this family is not in the Ancestral File. Does anybody recognise this family? Any assistance would be much appreciated. To-day is the 101st anniversary of the birth of my late father. I thought that a remembrance posting on this day might bring results. Name: Henry (Harry) Power Date of birth: Sunday, 5th January 1902 Place of birth: Glen Terrace, Waterford City, Ireland Parents: William Power and his wife, Mary Ellen (nee Power) Baptism: Thursday 9th January 1902 at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Waterford. Sponsors at baptism: Michael Fanning and Margaret Power (my father's eldest sister) School: My late father attended St Stephen's Monastery National School [De La Salle brothers], Stephen Street, Waterford. Work: My father worked for Woodman Matheson & Co Ltd in Waterford, Cork Dublin, and then back to Waterford as Manager in 1936. Death: Henry (Harry) Power died on Monday 10th February 1947. He is buried in the family grave at Ballybricken Church in Waterford. Does this information mean anything to anybody on the List? Dr Con Power [born at Gracedieu East, Waterford on 29th January 1939]

Appeal For Help To Protect The Museums Future ============================================== As most list members may be aware the museum society is a voluntary organisation. We have no permanent staff and no one receives a wage for their efforts on behalf of the society. For the past 8 years or so the day to day staffing of the museum has been carried out by a Fas Community Employment Scheme. In return for receiving approx. 20 euro (20 dollars) on top of their social welfare payment local unemployed people enroll as trainees for a period of 1 to 3 years. These trainees have contributed immensely to the development of the museum. Unfortunately due to the economic downturn in Ireland many places on these government training schemes are being cut. The museum committee has recently been informed that the museum is one of the more likely areas to experience these cuts. If this is correct it will mean that the committee will probably not be in a position to open the museum to the public from November 2003 on. The committee would like to appeal to anyone with an interest in Dungarvan museum to get in touch with one of our 4 local politicians via e-mail or snail mail and draw to their attention the effect the impending cuts in community employment schemes will have on Dungarvan Museum. We would appeal to anyone who does get in touch with these individuals to be polite as we need their support to ensure that the Museum stays open. The film was discovered in the online archive of British Pathe. It portrays a group of British Soldiers in Grattan Square with two captured Sinn Fein activists. The film dates from the 11th of November 1920 and lasts for 1 minute 40 seconds. You can view it for free at the Dungarvan Museum website. ============================================== 4. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 5. Hi folks; New to the Waterford, I have been researching MURRAY in the civil parishes of Mogeely and Clondulane, co. Cork. In Mogeely, near Rearour townland, where my MURRAY family lived in the mid -1800s is a headstone in Templevalley graveyard that states the MURRAYs of Mogeely were from Bishopstown townland. "Remember death and fear the Lord/ Erected/ by Thomas Murray of Bishopstown/in Memory of his three sons/ Thomas died July 14th 1839/ aged 18 years/ Patrick died July 14th 1841 aged 19 years/ John died July 18th 1843/ aged 26 years/ May they rest in peace Amen." In Castlelyons, where the family was burying there is the following headstone: This stone Erected/ by John Murray to/ the Memory of his/ Wife Johana who/ departed this Life/ April 2d 1799 Aged 50 yrs/ The Lord have mercy/ on her Soul. Amen./ John Fecid [Latin: John made this]. In Castlelyons parish registers the following appear: A. Thomas Murry married to Catherine Ahren (Ahern?) Their children baptized in Castlelyons were: i. Ellen Murihey, bpt. 09 Jun 1797 (Year transcription error?) Sponsors: John Noonan, Ellen Noonan. ii. Honora Murry, bpt. 24 Jul 1797 (Year transcription error?) Sponsors: Daniel Noonan, Honora Lenin. B. Patrick Murry married to Ellen Barry Their child baptized in Castlelyons was: i. Honora Murry, baptized 2 Sep 1815 Sponsors: Daniel MacCarthy, Mary Barry. C. John Murry married to Ann Travis (Travers?) Their children baptized in Castlelyons were: i. Bridget Murry, bpt. 30 Dec 1805 (mother's name Nancy Travirse) Sponsors: Thomas Mara, Mary Fitzgerald. ii. Patrick Murrin, bpt. 10 Jun 1808 Sponsors: Michael Keily, Mary Casey iii. James Murry, bpt. 27 Mar 1812 (mother's name Ann Travis) Sponsors: Daniel Daly, Catherine Waters. These MURRAYs were estate workers. Land stewards, household servants for the CAREYs in Careysville townland in the civil parish of Clondulane, Fermoy and the PEARDs in the civil parishes of Mogeely and Coole Abbey. (Conna) I recently received a letter from Richard Henchion, a leading expert in headstones in Cork, advising me to research Bishopstown, Mothel, co. Waterford. Mr. Henchion was correct. I own a complete set of The Irish Fiants of the Tudor Sovereigns. Yesterday I spent time researching the fiants for the parish of Mothel. In the fiants before Elizabeth, there are no entries for Mothel, however, this is to be expected, as they are not nearly as complete as those written during her reign. In the year 1601 and 1602, there are several entries for Mothel. Many are for Powers (le Peour). Many of the Powers were transplanted later on, since they were "in rebellion". Fiant 6622, dated May 8, 1602 reads "Pardon to .... John M'Murroghoe, of Mothell, tailor..." This is how the name MURRAY was spelled in those times, but there are other variations, including MURRAHY, MURHY, MURRIHY, MURRAHAY. FERMOY I have spent several years researching the MURRAYs in Fermoy and for those who may read this with MURRAY roots in Cork, those MURRAYs descend from the MURRAYs who lived in Dangandonovan. See Richard Henchion's report on the graveyard records for Dangan, the civil parish of Dungourney, Cork. Journal of the Cork Historical and Archeological Society (J.C.H.A.S.) Issue No. 229, 1974. Richard Henchion. The Gravestone Inscriptions of Co. Cork-X. Dangandonovan Burial Ground. ".Although anciently an independent parish, Dangandonovan or Dangan as it is today more frequently called - now constitutes part of Killeagh parish and must be linked therewith in any genealogical study of local families." KILWORTH There are a number of MURRAYs in Kilworth parish registers. It is also my conclusion, based on my research of the surname, that the Murrays in Kilworth are also descendants of the Waterford MURRAYs, and not of the Dangan branch. There is an exception, the MURRAYs living in the townland of Propoge, Kilworth, James Murray and Catherine Coote and family, are descendants of James MURRAY, buried in the Clondulane graveyard (Headstone), and his father Patrick MURRAY of Careysville, who is buried in Coole Abbey circa 1850 (no headstone). In 2003, I will be researching the MURRAYs 1600-1899 in Mothel, and would like to hear from others who are interested in this research. Thanks, David Murray New Hampshire, USA. I recently received the death certificate for my g-grandmother Ellen Doyle. Her maiden name was Ellen Murphy. Her death certificate shows that her father was MICHAEL MURPHY and her mother was MARGARET EVOY. It does not say what part of Ireland they were from but, because daughter Ellen Murphy immigrated to America, she shows up on the Federal Census which states that she immigrated from "Ireland Free Nation". Ellen Murphy was born December 8th 1852 in Ireland. This would mean that MARGARET EVOY and MICHAEL MURPHY would have been married no later than March 1852. They were probably born between 1820 and 1830. I am sending this request for help to the Wexford list because, through a lot of searching, I found EVOY surnames in Wexford. If anyone has any information at all on MARGARET EVOY and/or her husband MICHAEL MURPHY please contact me. Any lead would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Riona MacBhranaighGet more from the Web. I have no clue where the Power family came from. I have them traced back from OH to NY on the 1850 census then to Montreal where I have a marriage record for John Power and Margaret Molony. 4 Children were born to that couple in Montreal; one born in Saratoga, Waterford, NY; then more born in OH. On this Waterford list, I am trying to find a Michael Kanary/Canary who came from County Waterford according to his obit from OH; was born between 1838-40; and that's all I have to go on. I also know our name in Ireland was not Kanary. Michael married a Power daughter to the above couple. Lorraine [email protected]
I have a Powers family living in southern Ohio in the 1850's/1860's whose daughter Mary married my g grandfather's brother, James Fahey from Modeligo, County Waterford, in southern Ohio in 1868. The parents, who were also living in southern Ohio, were Martin and Madges (Byran) Powers. I do not have the birth place for the Powers, only that it was Ireland. My husband's line has John Power married to Margaret Molony in 1842 in Montreal. His parents from that marriage record were the "late" Patrick Power and Catherine Butler. John Power may have had a brother Thomas who eventually followed John and family to OH. I cannot get the Power family back into Ireland. I belong to the Waterford list trying to find a Michael Kanary born between 1838-40. The only thing I have to go on is his obit from OH states born in County Waterford. All I know so far that that the name was not Kanary. Michael Kanary/Canary eventually married Catherine Power, daughter of the above John and Margaret.
