Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. 3. Tim, Yes, I am saying that maps which accompany the GV list are available in the library at Dungarvan. The librarian kindly helped me and made a copy of the section. These are detailed OS maps in a large format, stored in a big hanging map case. However, I understand the Valuation Office in Dublin will send you a colored copy of your townland. Don't know if this is true. They do deal in black and white as well. The Valuation Office is on line at http://coastline.ennis.ie/page3.htm. Another source is the LDS libraries which have microfiche copies of the maps accompanying the Valuations. Sheila MacAvoy Block

    1. [WAT] Griffith's Valuations

    3. The filmed records of Griffith's Valuations (Householder's Index) contains name of the head of household of each occupier of land, the name of the immediate lessor, the ordinance survey reference number of the townland, the map reference letter and number of the plots in the townland for each family, a description of the property (house, office, garden or land or bog etc.), acreage in acres, rods and perches, annual value in pounds of land and of buildings separately stated, and total value of the property. The Valuation Office in Dublin will provide copies of maps of each townland in Griffith's. I do not know the cost. These maps will clearly show the plots divided into lettered and numbered units. I obtained mine from the public library at Dungarvan in Waterford. Remember that the Waterford survey was done early, around 1852, just after the worst of the Famine. You may find other names listed as neighbors to your ancestor, or the entry that you think may be your ancestor. You may find odd names that have appeared as sponsors in Baptism to the children of your ancestor, thus confirming the likelihood that you have found the right family. Sometimes, if the names in a townland are the same or there are many of the same surname, the survey will include in parenthesis the name of the father of the listed person, i.e. Pat'k (Michael) Hughes, meaning Patrick, the son of Michael Hughes. As an example, I found what I believed to be my great grandfather listed in the townland of Glencairn in the Parish of Lismore and Mocollop. Listed a few doors away was John Quirke. David Quirke was godfather to Catherine English born to Michael English and Mary Sullivan 22 Aug 1829. This is too close a coincidence to be ignored. In the townland right next to Glencairn, a family named Bocedy resided. My great grandmother Catherine Mary English's sister, Ellen married Daniel Bocedy in 1841. Wheels within wheels. I also found that the precise property for which Michael English was being taxed, parcel 4 (e). This parcel turned out to be one of a row of estate cottages which each had a front garden and two rooms. Sort of like a stable for people, poor dears! No wonder they all, every one of them, took off for America. In answer to your question, it depends on how obsessive you are about subtle details. Sheila MacAvoy Block

The best best bets are the Mormon (LDS) Family History Centers, which nearly every LDS Church has. If you're lucky enough to live near a college that has an Irish Studies program, they're likely to have Griffith's. In the Boston, MA area, we have a number of resources - New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston College, and the Boston Public Library. David Collins

    3. If you are interested in County Waterford, the Waterford County Library web site has a name search able data base which is a Waterford County extraction from Griffith's Evaluations. When you find your name you are given the parish and townland. Find the web site of the library through Google and follow the genealogy links to the lists. You may also purchase a CD which has the whole of Ireland compiled in the same way. There are some names missing however.. The complete collection of these valuations has been filmed by the LDS Church and is available worldwide. You can search for your ancestor if you know their County, or you can browse, although this is difficult. Hard copy is available at some LDS locations, notably Salt Lake City. There is a tutorial pamphlet published by LDS which leads you through the steps necessary to find a certain name within a County. The names published are occupying heads of households only, along with their immediate lessors. Sheila MacAvoy Block
