    2. I will be unsubbing next weekend as I head to you-know-where. I'll be back home and online, about the 15th of June. If anyone tries to contact me during the month I'm gone, all I can say is "Good luck". I have a feeling my mailbox will quickly fill with Spam, and shut down, so I wouldn't advise it. Contacting me either before I leave or after I return would probably be more fruitful. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    1. [WAT] My Power ancestors in the early 1800s - Waterford
    2. Dr Con Power
    3. I have pleasure in giving early family details of the family of my paternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Power [nee Power]. I would like to hear from anybody who may recognise this family. MY GREAT-GREAT-GRANDPARENTS + AND THEIR CHILDREN Waterford Heritage traced the parents of my great-grandfather, Michael Power, as William Power and Mary Feeley (otherwise Fiely, Feely, Fieldy or Fielding)(my great-great-grandparents) . William and Mary were married in Ballybricken on 11th August 1822. The witnesses were Edmund Henebry and Johanna Currin and the priest was Rev P Quirk. Mary Power (nee Feeley) is buried in the Power grave in Ballybricken with, among others, her sons Michael and David. The children of William and Mary Power were: - (1) Michael Power [my great-grandfather] baptised in Ballybricken on 19th August 1823. The sponsors were John Power and Ellen Fitzgerald. The priest was Rev M Phelan. (2) Patrick Power baptised in Ballybricken on 26th February 1827. The sponsors were Edward Kennedy and Mary Power. The priest was Rev P Morrissey. There was only 1 Patrick Power in the British Census 1881 who had been born in Ireland in 1827. Could this be he? The Patrick Power in 1881 was a Catholic Priest, Rev Patrick Power, 30 West Road, Congelton, Cheshire, England. He was described as the Head of Household, age 54 years, born in Ireland. He lived with his housekeeper, Emily Galighan, single, age 30 years, also born in Ireland. (3) David Power later known as David Feeley Power baptised in Ballybricken on 29th July 1829. The sponsors were William Murry and Ellen Power. The priest was Rev Edmund Power. (4) Richard Power baptised in Ballybricken on 6th November 1832. The sponsors were Michael Daley and Anastatia Butler. The priest was Rev M Burke. There was only 1 Richard Power in the British Census 1881 who had been born in Ireland in 1832. Could this be he? The Richard Power in 1881 lived at 55A Chapman Street, Hulme, Lancashire, England. He was the Head of Household, age 49 years, born in Ireland. By trade, he was a Boot Closer. His wife, Julia Power, age 47 years was also born in Ireland. They had 3 children, all born in Manchester, England - (i) Edward P, age 19 years, a Boot Closer, (ii) Margaret M, age 16 years, scholar, and (iii) Josephine, age 12 years, scholar. They had three lodgers, Arthur Crowther, age 29, English, a Commercial Clerk, with his wife, Alice age 23, and their son George E age 9 months. (5) Johanna Power baptised in Ballybricken on 23rd July 1835. The sponsors were John Broder and Joan Moran and the priest was Rev M Burke. She was not in the British Census 1881. According to Waterford Heritage Services records, she married a Michael Power and they had at least one child, Richard Power. (6) Brigid Power baptised in Ballybricken on 13th September 1836. The sponsors were John Galavan and Mary Keeffe and the priest was Rev Edmund Larkin. (7) Brigid Power baptised in Ballybricken on 26th September 1843 (the Bridget of 13th September 1836 obviously died young and it was not unusual to give another child the same name in those circumstances). The sponsors were William Doyle and Mary Brien and the priest was Rev P Kent. She was not in the British Census 1881. MY GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDPARENTS According to Waterford Heritage Survey, the likely birth details of William Power (my great-great-grandfather) are that he was baptised in Ballybricken on 8th October 1804. His parents were Michael Power and Brigid (nee Flahavan) (my great-great-great-grandparents). The sponsors were Maurice Power and Honor Flynn and the priest was J P (possibly Rev John Power). Thank you in advance for any reply Dr Con Power

They came to Covington Town, NY. where Martin worked for a Major Brooks farming. I know the name of their parents but with names like Phelan or Whelan married to a Power in County Waterford, I am looking for a needle in a hay stack. Martin's mother Mary was a Power also. His father was John. Ellen's parents were Richard Power and maybe Helen Dunn. I got the names of her parents from a cousin on the Power side. Con at [email protected] writes: << Does anybody know for what is the full name for Carrigan??? in the District of Kilmeadan? >> Con, I would look at the townland of Carriganard in Kilbarry civil parish. It's located a bit less than 3 miles SW of the central area of Waterford City. This places it about a mile south of the N 25 in the Waterford Industrial Estate area of west Waterford City. I don't know how this fits-in with the Kilmeadan District, but Kilmeadan (and Brad Pitt's house there) are only about 4 miles WNW from Carriganard. 3. The reason David Collins suggested the PRO is that Civil Registration of births in England began July 1, 1837. The two children you mention are probably registered. I would email the Lancashire Record Office in Lancaster and seek their help. [email protected] The parents might have married in England but it would be too early for the marriage to be recorded by civil authorities. If they were Roman Catholic, the LRO has some records of Catholic marriages which they will look up for you for a small fee. You might ask. Otherwise, you'll probably have to hope an obituary has a birth place for the parents. Sheila MacAvoy Block
