    2. I would also like to say how teriffic and useful the Waterfordcoco site is as I try to research my Co. Waterford roots. It gives me a great feeling to know that those still in Waterford also value the same things as others scattered around the Earth, and are willing to extend themselves to those ends. Thanks to all those great people who have had a part in the development and continuation of this site. Russell Brown Freeland, Michigan , USA

    1. [WAT] Waterford County Library Web Site
    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi to all list members. I am pleased to announce the launch of the beta version of Waterford County Library's new web site www.waterfordcountylibrary.ie . Please note that the site is not entirely finished yet and some minor adjustments need to be made to it. We would like list members to get in touch with Waterford County Library Service email [email protected] and Deise Design email [email protected] with any observations they would like to make about the new site. We are interested in improving the site so please feel free to make critical comments if you wish. Several of the Library staff have worked on this (ongoing) project for over 10 years; by providing feedback you will demonstrate to Waterford County Council the value of the project and ensure it's continued support for the project. The majority of the work on this project was done by Library Staff who compiled the databases over many years. In particular I would like to mention Donal Brady Waterford County Librarian, Eddie Byrne, Rachel Neylin, Ger Croughan & Noleene Osbourne. Apologies to any Library staff I may have inadvertently missed. Willie Whelan Deise Design What's new about the site:- The new site finally has a database interface that works in pretty much all browsers. I appreciate the difficulties that the previous interface on the Waterford County Council site caused users. This was beyond the control of the Library service and Deise Design. Some new features to look out for on the site include:- * Improved help in how to search the database * Visually Impaired Site - This site is a duplicate of the main site and is designed to be used by those who are blind (using a braille browser) or visually impaired. Unfortunately the databases do not have this functionality. I believe this is the first local authority site in the country to feature a visually impaired module. This module will shortly be deployed on the updated County Council site. * Question Of The Day - As yet this consists of one question. As patrons make requests of the museum staff this section will be added to. * View All recently added articles - Clicking on this link brings up all articles added in the last 30 days. Useful for regular visitors to the site. * Mailing List - Enter your email address to join the Waterford County Library Mailing List and receive email on the latest County Library news and notification when updates are made to the website. The following databases which were formerly part of the Waterford County Council web site have been moved to the library site. Library Catalogue The Library Catalogue is the main point of access to resources held by Waterford County Library. You can search and locate books, journals, maps, photographs, computer files and CD's. Catalogue records provide information about the item searched for, indicating what it contains and where it is located. Trade Directories Historical Trade Directories listing the business and professional people of an area are a core resource for local historians and genealogists. Death Registers Records of all deaths registered in Co. Waterford from January 1st 1864 until December 31st 1901. The Great War : Waterford Dead A database of Waterford people who died in World War One Griffith's Valuation Where people lived and what property they held in County Waterford, 1848 - 1864. Grave Memorials Inscriptions from the headstones of County Waterford graveyards. Community Information Information on community groups, educational institutions, business services, tourism, leisure, administrative, arts and cultural organizations in Waterford City and County. Current Register of Electors The names and addresses of those eligible to vote. Deise Design - Web Site Design & Internet Consultancy www.deisedesign.com 086 2748377

    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi To all on the list. I have recently seen some mentions of both the Waterford County Council web site and the new County Library web site on the list. It wasn't my intention to post any message on these sites as yet but seeing as some list members have observed the changes I may as well make a few comments. Firstly both of the sites are undergoing major development. The council site will have a more user friendly interface that will make it more easily read by the visually impaired and it should feature more intuitive navigation. The databases on the council site that are of interest to the genealogist are being transferred to the new County Library site. The Library site has not officially launched yet and is still being worked on (That's why I haven't posted the URL :) ) We have some load and speed issues with the server which slows the site if it gets a lot of visitors. The site will launch very shortly at which point I will e-mail the lists. I am sure everyone will be glad to hear that the java applet interface for the databases has disappeared and been replaced with something that actually works in pretty much all browsers. The County Library site will also feature search tips and a more detailed help to enable people to search the databases efficiently. Once the site launches we will be looking to the community to critique it and suggest how we can improve it. Hope this information is of some use. I will post again shortly when the sites launch with a more detailed description of the changes. 3. Hi, New to this list so posting my interest. I'm looking for my GGFather Walter O'ROURKE who was born in Waterford in about 1850. I don't know if it was Waterford itself or Co Waterford. I know nothing about him until he left Ireland to study at the Kneller hall school of military music before then being posted to Burma and India where he spent the rest of his life. He married an Amelia KELLY, also of Irish origin, but I'm pretty sure that happened in Rangoon, Burma rather than Ireland. Can anyone be of any help? Regards, Jon. www.teague.me.uk

    2. Peter Langley
    3. I have just paid a visit to the Waterford County Council site, and it is much improved. Not only has it speeded up, but it did not crash on me half a dozen times. Also a lot of extra databases have been added. Large numbers have been added to the death register, and the search engine also comes up with names of people who may have registered the death. However it appears there are a lot of names still to be listed. There are also a lot more details of grave stone inscriptions and further grave yards and cemeteries have been added since I last looked. Go to the site: http://www.waterfordcoco.ie/ and click on County Library on the left hand side. Good luck with your hunting. Peter.

    3. Hello Everybody My father Michael Joseph Croke was born 17th June 1918 Ballybricken Waterford. His parents were Patrick Croke & Alice (Power). His parents were dead before he married my mother. and my father died when I was little. It is known that my dad had a sister, who was married and had two children, but have no idea of her name. I know my father was virtually brought up by an aunt & uncle named White. They lived at St Otterans Cemetery and had a daughter called Statia. She married a Power and was living in the 50s at 144 Cork Road. I hope somebody recognizes this family and can help me. 1. [WAT] Dungarvan Museum News - The Fenian Rebellion
    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi to all. We have added two very interesting articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Both cover the same subject matter. The articles deal with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic (outside Dungarvan) in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. A possible interesting postscript: At the moment we are researching whether Augustine E. Costello one of the leading (and most impressive) Fenians in the company is the same Augustine E. Costello who wrote Our Firemen: A History of the New York Fire Departments, Volunteer and Paid, from 1609 to 1887. This book went back into print last year in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy as a memorial to the fireman of NY. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. Apologies for some of the navigational problems on the site at the moment. We are in the middle of reorganising the site. We will tidy up these navigational glitches as soon as we can. If anyone has a historical /genealogical web site and they want to have a link between our site and theirs please get in touch. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. Changing / Removing your email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== The first article is by Sylvester Murray and tells the story of the American Fenian landing at Helvic, near Dungarvan in 1867, it was first published in Decies No. 9, The Journal Of The Old Waterford Society, September 1978. The second article is called 'The Cruise Of The Jacknell' A reproduction of an article published by Fenian sympathisers in 1868. The article deals with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. The crew of the ship were Irish Americans many of whom had served in the American Civil War. At the trial the men used an interesting defence against the charge of treason felony levelled against them. They stated that as citizens of a foreign country (America) they could not be guilty of treason to the Crown. ============================================== 2. Dungarvan Museum Shop ============================================== With the cooperation of Powers bookshop we have put up a selection of Local history books for sale on the site. The titles include 'The Waterford Rebels of 1849', 'A History of Dungarvan Town and District', 'Them Golden Fields I Trod', 'History of Waterford City and County', 'Walking the Holy Ground in Ardmore and Lismore' and 'Waterford People - A Biographical Dictionary'. We can accept personal cheques drawn on major banks, postal orders and International money orders. Unfortunately we cannot accept Credit Card payments. All proceeds from books sold on the site go towards the maintenance of Dungarvan Museum Society a non-profit organisation. We also have a special offer that allows you to make a considerable saving on the shipping costs if you order all six books available for sale on the site at the same time. http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=14 ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards ============================================== To mark the launch of our summer exhibition 'Postcards Of County Waterford' featuring postcards from most of the major villages and towns of Waterford we have decided to publish the next in a series of limited edition postcards. We need to decide which postcard should be next in our reproduction postcard series and we want you to help us. We have selected 4 postcards from the turn of the century for you to choose from. We'd like you to vote for your favourite card by sending an email to [email protected] with the title of your favourite postcard in the subject line. You can view the cards by clicking on http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115. You can also find them by typing postcard into the search box at the top of the site. Personal callers to the museum can select a card using a voting system that we have set up in the museum. The titles of the postcards in the competition are as follows : a. Bathing Place b. The Bandstand c. Meagher Street d. Home Rule Street Please note that the other three cards are not in the competition. ============================================== 4. Looking For Old Photographs & Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the doner at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 5.
