Hello Im trying to track a Nugent family (Catholic) that emigrated from Rathgormuck Co.Waterford to Canada in the early 1800s. The only information I have is that John Nugent (d.o.b. approx. 1850) a brother of my greatgrandmother went to live with his fathers brother (Christian name unknown) and family in Canada about 1867. John died during his first winter there. I have no idea where in Canada they lived. Johns parents were Patrick Nugent (emigrated to Australia in 1867), and Ellen O'Gorman (who never left Ireland). Johns grandparents were John Nugent and Catherine Curry. Apart from the usual Irish Christian names, this Nugent family uses the relatively uncommon names of Richard and David. Any information about the family and descendants, or how to track down a Death Certificate for John, would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mick Dowling Melbourne Australia
Listers, I am looking for John Walsh & Mary O'Brien, my gggparents. One known son, James, was born in ?Waterford, Ireland in 1837. Emigrated to Halifax, NS, Canada. I have more info on some of James Walsh's descendants from the 1881 & 1901 Halifax census if any one is interested. Thanks for your kind consideration, Kevin Aylward Walsh

Hi, I am resubmitting my query as I have changed email addresses. I used to be subbed to this list a couple years ago, under [email protected] I am now [email protected] My ggg grandparents were Mary MURPHY and Patrick GALLAGHER of the RC Parish of Myshall, Co Carlow. One of their daughters, Mary, moved with her family to Waterford. They were living there in 1856, according to a family letter. I found Mary and her husband, William DORAN in the baptismal records of the above parish in Co Carlow. There are baptismal records for 3 daughters. The info I have on the 3 DORAN daughters is as follows: Mary Ann Oct 11 1840 Sarah May 28 1843 Elizabeth Sept 30 1849 I do know that Mary Ann emigrated to the US and became a nun. Sarah may have married a HOULIHAN and emigrated to Canada. She could have married him in Waterford or in Canada. I do not know what happened to Elizabeth. Nor do i know if Mary and William had other children. I only know of the 3 girls. Basically I am stuck in 1856 Waterford, as I have not done much with this family. I'm ready to work on them again. Anything look familiar? Debbie

After much searching have just found marriage for Philip Boutcher and Hannah Jane Jewell in Waterford on 10 September 1855. Hannah Jane Boutcher died in Ashton Torquay Newton Abbott, Devon England on 12 April 1893. Children: Albert, Avery, Mary Anne (my gg grandmother), William, Elizabeth and Arthur. How and why Hannah finished up in Devon where she was a servant when she died is a mystery. Cannot find death of Philip, he was a Master Mariner (shown on her death certificate and as already deceased), nor any birth records of either of them. Does anyone have any suggestion where I go from here? Thank you Anne Gaffney Australia

In response to the question on the 1901 census. I called FHL help number and talked to someone who told which tapes had the parishes I was looking for. It worked out but I did have 7 tapes to go through and the two parishes, and many others, were on 6 of the tapes. Hello All I am new to this list and am looking for any information on Michael MURPHY born c.1832 married to Ellen born c.1840. They had come to Wales (Swansea area) by 1881 and had children with them. The oldest I have so far was born c.1871 (James Murphy) in Waterford. So I am looking for records of a marriage between Michael and Ellen before 1871. Can anyone advise me please? Thank you Karen
I am planning a trip to Ireland and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with "self-catering", particularly in Waterford County. Could really use any pearls of wisdom or otherwise practical advice. Please contact me off-list as this is (obviously) off-topic. Thanks Kristine

Hi to all. We have added two good articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 2. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards 4. History Outreach Program Launched - Preserve Your Areas History 6. Contacting The Museum 7. Changing / Removing your email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== Portlaw A case study of Portlaw, County Waterford by Tina Foran. The history of Portlaw and the story of the Malcolmson family are inextricably linked. The rise of the Malcolmson empire was mirrored in the growth and development of Portlaw, and unfortunately the decline in the fortunes of this great family marked a decline in the fortunes of Portlaw. If you have difficulty using the link http://dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=139 visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. 1777 Road Maps 1777 road maps of West Waterford from George Taylor and Andrew Skinner's 'Maps of The Roads of Ireland' Surveyed in 1777 and published for the authors on the 14th November 1778 in London. If you have difficulty using the link http://dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=138 visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on downloads at the top of the home page and then click on 1777 Road Maps Of West Waterford. ============================================== 2. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project ============================================== Many out of print / out of copyright documents are in the Museum Archive. We would like to make these available on our web site but due to the constraints of staffing and time we aren't able to scan/ocr all of them. Following a suggestion from John Geary, one of our list members from America, we have had the idea of getting list members to help us scan text from these documents. Here is how we would hope the idea would work. We would post photocopied documents to a volunteer. They would scan them. They would e-mail us the scanned document. We would probably have to send a minimum of about 30 pages a time to make it worth the museums while. If you have the ability to scan documents and want to help the museum please send your e-mail address to [email protected] . We wouldn't be in a great hurry to get documents scanned. If they were sent back within a month we would be more than happy. A Word Of Caution: As a veteran of scanning documents :) I would like to caution all potential volunteers that it takes longer than you think (especially the proofreading), it is often times boring and you probably won't get the thanks you feel you deserve. However you would be making a very worthwhile contribution to preserving Waterford History. We are in discussion at the moment with the copyright holder of the Ardmore Journals. I am hopeful we will be given the go ahead to place them on the site. If not I have at least three major publications that we could place online. Anyone who helps with the scanning will get a credit on the site. ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards - Home Rule Street Selected ============================================== The Home Rule Street postcard is now available for sale at the museum price 1 Euro. ============================================== 4. History Outreach Program Launched ============================================== For some time I have been conscious that we have been very Dungarvan (and Abbeyside:) ) centric in the museum. The museum needs to take an active part in preserving the history of all of West Waterford. To this end we have launched a history outreach program. The following text will appear in the local papers next week. We are looking for volunteers in all the villages of West Waterford. If you are interested please get in touch. Preserving the history of your area is too important to leave it up to anyone else. Dungarvan Museum History Outreach Program Preserve The History Of Your Town Or Village Are you interested in preserving the history of Ardmore, Ballyduff, Ballymacarbry, Bunmahon, Cappoquin, Clashmore, Clonea, Fenor, Kilbrien, Kilmacthomas, Lismore, Portlaw, Rathgormack, Stradbally, Tallow & Villierstown. Dungarvan Museum are pleased to announce the launch of their local history outreach program. This program is designed to offer people with an interest in the history of their local area an opportunity to preserve this history before it is lost for good. You dont need to be an academic to participate in this program all we are looking for in our volunteers is enthusiasm and an ability to commit a small amount of time to preserving Waterfords history. Whether your interest is in collecting old photos to be copied or in writing historical articles there is a place for you in our program. What we hope to do Initially we hope to have a contact person or persons in each village that will collect old photographs, postcards, billheads and documents for scanning by museum staff. The original document can then be either donated to the museum or returned to the owner. The electronic copy will be added to our archives preserving it for posterity. What Dungarvan Museum can offer your area. We hope to preserve the historical records of all areas in West Waterford. At the moment these records are vanishing and being destroyed on an almost daily basis. Once we have a collection of photos assembled from an area we would hope to exhibit them as part of a temporary exhibition in Dungarvan Museum. We would also hope to have a travelling exhibition visit each of the villages displaying the donations from the area. This local archive would be a valuable resource for history teachers, school children, local history researchers and the general population of the area. What the museum can offer volunteers. · Advice on conserving photographs and documents. · Repair of damaged photographs. · Assistance in transferring old cine film to video. · Online publishing of articles, photographs and documents. · Assistance and guidance in research projects. If you are interested in joining this program please contact William Whelan at 086 2748377 Email: [email protected] or leave your details into Dungarvan Museum, St. Augustine Street, Dungarvan. ============================================== 5. Looking For Old Photographs & Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the doner at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 6. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at [email protected] If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact [email protected] We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. We endeavor to act on all suggestions that we get but please bear in mind that we are a voluntary organisation and it can take some time to answer queries. ============================================== 7. New Website Articles ============================================== A wonderfully well written autobiographical article by David Walsh on the old railway station in the small West Waterford town of Cappoquin on any sultry summers evening in the mid-1960s as seen through the eyes of a child. On this site sometimes we focus overmuch on the facts of history this article redresses the balance and gives an insight into what it felt like to live in Cappoquin in the 1960's. My thanks to David Walsh for sharing the article with the museum. The article can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=137&pagenum=1 If you have difficulty using the link visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. ============================================== 2. Dungarvan Museum Shop ============================================== With the cooperation of Powers bookshop we have put up a selection of Local history books for sale on the site. The titles include 'The Waterford Rebels of 1849', 'A History of Dungarvan Town and District', 'Them Golden Fields I Trod', 'History of Waterford City and County', 'Walking the Holy Ground in Ardmore and Lismore' and 'Waterford People - A Biographical Dictionary'. We can accept personal cheques drawn on major banks, postal orders and International money orders. Unfortunately we cannot accept Credit Card payments. All proceeds from books sold on the site go towards the maintenance of Dungarvan Museum Society a non-profit organisation. We also have a special offer that allows you to make a considerable saving on the shipping costs if you order all six books available for sale on the site at the same time. http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=14 ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards - Home Rule Street Selected ============================================== The postcard of Home Rule Street, Abbeyside has been selected as the next in our series of postcard reproductions. You can view the postcard at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115&pagenum=7 Thanks to all who voted for the postcard of your choice. In second place (for the second time) was Bathing Place http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115&pagenum=2 Martin and I have had a bit of a discussion and it is possible that we will put it to the committee that we will reproduce the Bathing Place image as the last in our series of postcard images from turn of the century Dungarvan. Expect to see the Home Rule Street postcard for sale in the museum in 6 weeks time. Once the set of 4 is complete we will look at making them available to our overseas readers. We are conscious of the large contribution made to preserving Dungarvans history by our overseas readers and members and we don't wish to disenfranchise them if at all possible :). ============================================== 4.
