    2. I am looking for any information on the following couple: Michael TOBIN and Henrietta MARKEY (or Marcay). Their oldest son, Michael TOBIN, was born in 1813 and he migrated in the 1830's to the Hemmingsford/Huntingdon area of Quebec. I recently learned their names from Michael's church marriage record in Quebec. I have no further information so this is really a shot in the dark. Bonnie House

    2. Frank at [email protected] writes: << I have ancestors that originated in Cullencastle and there seems to be almost no information available on this townland - past or present. >> Frank, Cullencastle townland is located about a mile and a half NNW of Tramore town. It's a block-like-shaped townland (sort of like France, or Bolivia) which lies on both sides of the R 682, which in turn runs from Tramore up to the N 25 road. The townland has a few small canals within it, connecting to a stream - so there may have been some boggy land there at one time. But, basically, the townland is gentle, rolling country. There were 15 to 20 buildings in the townland (as of 30 years ago) as well as Cullen Castle. Cullen Castle (more properly, a "tower house") ruin is "shrouded in mystery" <gr>, which means that there are no historical references to it - prior to the Down Survey of about 1650, where the castle is recorded. In 1640, the land was owned by Francis Bryver of Waterford. Tower houses do not generally appear in Ireland until the 15th century. That's about all I have. Hi Frank, Townland Acres County Barony Parish PLU Province Cullencastle 390 Waterford Middlethird Kilbride Waterford Munster Cullencastle is a townland in the civil parish of Kilbride County Waterford. As there are only five townlands in the parish you won't find Cullencastle on any normal maps. You would need to get an Ordnance survey map. 3. One of my 3xgt grfthrs was a James BUDD. Rather second-hand evidence has it that he was an estate owner of Tranmore, Co. Waterford, and was a Justice of the Peace. His very approx year range would be c.1775-1840. My knowledge of Waterford geography is very weak and I should be most grateful if anyone could advise me if Tranmore is a recognised place; or should it really be Tramore? If the information about him is correct, there should be documentary sources referring to him. Any suggestions of possible sources would be enormously helpful. Phil Down, Chichester, England.

    3. Hi to all. We have added seven articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. The large quantity of articles currently being published are a result of the Museum Scanning Project. These articles were all scanned from The Ardmore Journal which was published under the editorship of James Quain during the Eighties and early Nineties. Thanks to museum volunteers Marc Sullivan & Eileen Fraher Sullivan, Kathleen Paton and Joanne Connors Parandjuk (among others) for all of their hard work. These volunteers and others like them are members of the museum scanning project. You can find out more details about this project on the homepage of the museum web site at www.dungarvanmuseum.org. History Outreach Program ============================================== Dungarvan Museum History Outreach Program Preserve The History Of Your Town Or Village Are you interested in preserving the history of Ardmore, Ballyduff, Ballymacarbry, Bunmahon, Cappoquin, Clashmore, Clonea, Fenor, Kilbrien, Kilmacthomas, Lismore, Portlaw, Rathgormack, Stradbally, Tallow & Villierstown. Dungarvan Museum are pleased to announce the launch of their local history outreach program. This program is designed to offer people with an interest in the history of their local area an opportunity to preserve this history before it is lost for good. You don’t need to be an academic to participate in this program all we are looking for in our volunteers is enthusiasm and an ability to commit a small amount of time to preserving Waterford’s history. Whether your interest is in collecting old photos to be copied or in writing historical articles there is a place for you in our program. What we hope to do Initially we hope to have a contact person or persons in each village that will collect old photographs, postcards, billheads and documents for scanning by museum staff. The original document can then be either donated to the museum or returned to the owner. The electronic copy will be added to our archives preserving it for posterity. What Dungarvan Museum can offer your area. We hope to preserve the historical records of all areas in West Waterford. At the moment these records are vanishing and being destroyed on an almost daily basis. Once we have a collection of photos assembled from an area we would hope to exhibit them as part of a temporary exhibition in Dungarvan Museum. We would also hope to have a travelling exhibition visit each of the villages displaying the donations from the area. This local archive would be a valuable resource for history teachers, school children, local history researchers and the general population of the area. What the museum can offer volunteers. · Advice on conserving photographs and documents. · Repair of damaged photographs. · Assistance in transferring old cine film to video. · Online publishing of articles, photographs and documents. · Assistance and guidance in research projects. If you are interested in joining this program please contact William Whelan at 086 2748377 Email: [email protected] or leave your details into Dungarvan Museum, St. Augustine Street, Dungarvan. ============================================== 3. Museum News ============================================== The Museum's lecture season got off to a great start with Michael Smith (formerly Political Correspondent and Industrial Editor of the Guardian and Business Editor of The Observer) delivering a slide show and lecture about one of Irelands heroes, the legendary Antarctic Explorer Tom Crean. 150 people packed into Lawlor's Hotel to hear the story of Crean's adventures with Shackleton and Scott. Eddie Cantwell of Dungarvan Museum did excellent work in organising and publicising the exhibition. We recently received a booklet on the history of Tallow and film footage of Dungarvan in the 40's that we will shortly be publishing on the museum web site. The annual museum second hand book sale will be on over the weekend of the Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of November. The museum will open at 7pm Friday night for all those wishing to buy books or you can just chat about joining the museum, volunteering, the web site etc. An exhibition on the history of the 4th Waterford Abbeyside Scout Troop will be held in the Museum over the next few weeks. It will be open during the second hand book sale commencing 7pm Friday November 7th and for some weeks after. ============================================== 4. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at [email protected] If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact [email protected] We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. We endeavor to act on all suggestions that we get but please bear in mind that we are a voluntary organisation and it can take some time to answer queries. 2. Pat Connors
    3. I have updated the Parish History Books website. You can find the link on the Irish Books Discussion Mailing List website at: http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/books/ All counties are covered and many books have Lookup Volunteers. If you know of any books that are not on the list, there is a form on the website where you can enter the information. If you see a book that you have and would like to volunteer to do lookups on it, you can also use the form. In case you don't know about the parish history books, they are books printed in the area and they mostly include the history of the parish, but some actually have the Tithes Applotment and Griffith Valuation records for the area, and some have census records. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

    2. I recently discovered that some of my Carrick Beg, Carrick-on-Suir ancestors, were not born in Tipperary, as I had believed. The 1909 Censusof Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary revealed that my Grandmother Margaret MAHER Thompson, who resided on Rackhill Road, was born in Waterford abt 1884; along with Thomas MAHER abt 1874; Edmond Maher; and Patrick MAHER Abt 1887. This leads me to believe that my great grandparents John MAHER and Margaret BRITT may also have been born in Waterford, as I have not found anyhing in Tipperary about them. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Michael F. Harkins Columbus, Georgia, USA

    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi We have finally got the new museum web site ready. It should much easier to navigate. We would be really interested in getting feedback on the changes so please feel free to e-mail us with your comments. Willie & Martin Whelan Dungarvan Museum 1. New Museum Web Site Launched 2. Donate Money On-line To Dungarvan Museum 3. Recent Donations and Events 4. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 5. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project 6. Changing Email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Museum Web Site Launched ============================================== Dungarvan Museum County Waterford have revamped and rebuilt their award winning web site www.dungarvanmuseum.org . As part of their commitment to meeting the needs of all of the community, the site now includes a version of the site for the visually impaired. People who suffer from various visual impairments (including colour blindness) and blind people (using a Braille browser to speak the sites content to them) can now enjoy 2500 pages of content on the history of Dungarvan and County Waterford. In 2002 the web site was short-listed among the top five research museum web sites in the world at the sixth annual Museums and the Web conference in Boston. It followed up this success by being awarded Best Publication for Visitors at the Irish Museum Of The Year Awards 2002, in the process beating stiff competition from the The National Museum Of Ireland, The National Gallery Of Ireland and The Ulster Museum. In 2003 the museum has focused on improving accessibility and navigation on the web site for visitors. The site now meets International web content accessibility guidelines. In addition, two major features have been added to the site to aid people in finding the content they are looking for. Web sites with large quantities of content have difficulty in 'pushing' all of the content that is contained on the site to a visitor. The information a visitor requires may be buried somewhere on the site but they just can't find it. To enhance the visitor experience the museum has added a related articles feature. If a person visits the site to access an article on the War Of Independence they will have further reading recommended to them. A similar system of 'Related Articles' is used on major news sites like CNN, BBC etc. The ability to select articles by time period has also been introduced. Now you can click on a time line or select the era from a drop down menu that interests you and all articles relating to that period will be listed. Work has also been undertaken on ensuring that the site can grow and expand into the future. Work is in progress constructing a content tree for the content management system powering the site. This will enable the web site editors to add extensive additional depth to the site. In time the site will be able to contain tens of thousands of pages of content. This content tree will also allow editors better manage categories / sub categories and automatically transfer entire branches of the tree creating a new category for content if the need arises. ============================================== 2. Donate Money Online To Dungarvan Museum ============================================== Dungarvan Museum is a non profit voluntary museum (even the web site was designed for free by Déise Design). The local council generously provides us with a home for the museum free of charge. The running costs of the museum are partly met by the local council but a large proportion of the finance we need to run the museum has to be raised by voluntary effort (book sales and raffles etc.). We would be grateful for any financial donation large or small to help us with our work. We can now accept credit card donations on-line using Paypal. Donations received in this way are used exclusively to purchase artifacts in on-line auctions. You can decide the amount you wish to donate (it can be a small as 1 or 2 euros or dollars), it will be appreciated. ============================================== 3. Recent Donations and Events ============================================== The History Outreach Program is starting to produce material from around the West of the County. We have recently received some nice material from the Aglish / Clashmore area. Also we have had donated a nice short history of Tallow that will appear on this web site in a month or so. ============================================== 4. New Web-site Articles ============================================== We have added several new articles to the web site www.dungarvanmuseum.org . Four new biographical articles have been added to the web site People in Waterford History - 20th Century People in Waterford History - 19th Century People in Waterford History - 18th Century People in Waterford History - 17th Century The Struggle For Freedom In West Waterford A lecture on the War Of Independence and Civil War in Waterford delivered by Domnall O'Faoláin in 1966. Domnall was the son of Commandant Pax Whelan C/O of Waterford No. 2 Brigade I.R.A. during the War Of Independence. Please bear in mind that this article is written from a Republican perspective. We feel it is important to place these articles online regardless of the viewpoint that they are written from. The fact that Dungarvan Museum publishes an article does not indicate that we support the views in the article. ============================================== 5. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project ============================================== [The scanning project has not moved as quickly as we had hoped although we are making progress. I will be in touch with volunteers in the next week with details of the project.] Many out of print / out of copyright documents are in the Museum Archive. We would like to make these available on our web site but due to the constraints of staffing and time we aren't able to scan/ocr all of them. Following a suggestion from John Geary, one of our list members from America, we have had the idea of getting list members to help us scan text from these documents. Here is how we would hope the idea would work. We would post photocopied documents to a volunteer. They would scan them. They would e-mail us the scanned document. We would probably have to send a minimum of about 30 pages a time to make it worth the museums while. If you have the ability to scan documents and want to help the museum please send your e-mail address to [email protected] . We wouldn't be in a great hurry to get documents scanned. If they were sent back within a month we would be more than happy. ============================================== 6.
