MOYER By: 10/25/2002 1903 - 2002 Dr. John "Fritz" Moyer, 99, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, at White Oak Estates in Oskaloosa. His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Margaret Weiner officiating. Burial: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visiting hours at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa begin noon Sunday and continue through Sunday afternoon. Memorials: St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa or the Oskaloosa Public Library. Fritz Moyer was born Aug. 1, 1903, in St. Joseph, Mo., to John Autumn and Elizabeth Fuller Moyer. Following high school graduation he attended Colorado State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in forestry, then served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1934 he married Betty Vawter in Des Moines. She died Dec. 15, 1990. Following World War II, he went to work for a forestry management team in Eugene, Ore. He then returned to his teaching career. He taught in Sault Saint Marie in Michigan. He then went to Iowa State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in botany in 1953. After earning his doctorate he taught at Arkansas Tech in Monticello, Ark., then taught at Northern Illinois University. In 1962 he moved to Oskaloosa to teach biology at William Penn College. He retired from teaching in 1972. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa Kiwanis Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Tri-Luminar Lodge A.F. & A.M., Knights Templar, and the Iowa Academy of Science. He is survived by a nephew, Scott Duvall of Cobalt, Conn.; his guardian, Min Houk of Oskaloosa; many great-nieces and -nephews, and many friends.
