Sandy Funeral Home there is handling the funeral. BORING -- He was the one they went to when they wanted to know about Boring. Like, "Has it always been Boring?" Willard "Bill" Boring, grandson of the homesteader who gave his name to the community around his farm, died Sunday after spending much of his 91 years humoring people who thought the town and family name was irresistibly funny. His stock response: "It's just a name, not a condition." In his later years, he sometimes wondered whether the joke hadn't been run into the ground. That was after the TV series "Real People" had made a running gag of Boring, Ore., in 1979, and the "Today" show and David Letterman had had their fun. Bill Boring would use the humor about the town's name to point up Boring's small-town virtues and community spirit. His great pride, his son Robert Boring said Wednesday, was the family's Century Farm and the community he served, especially through his work for schools and Kiwanis. "He was one of the last of the old-timers around here,. He knew a lot of the history," Robert Boring said. "He was pretty proud of the community. He was involved in the organization of the fire department, and he was always in on what was going on, particularly through the schools, in churches and with Kiwanis." Among the historical stories Bill Boring could tell were his memories of the 1925 fire that destroyed the original rail station after a bucket brigade spilled much of the water it hauled from a stream. Bill Boring was a member of Kiwanis for 21 years; president of the Sandy, Boring and Gresham Early Risers clubs during those years; and lieutenant governor of Pacific Northwest District Division 66. He was active in several churches. Bill Boring was born Oct. 31, 1910, on the family farm where he died. He grew up in a home built around what had been called Boring's School, which was named for his grandfather, William Harrison Boring, a Civil War veteran who donated the school land. The land was returned to the family in 1904. Bill Boring spent all but about four years of his life, including two years at the University of Oregon, on the farm. "He built the house he died in by himself," Robert Boring said. "I think his bill for labor was about $125. He did everything else, and a lot of that work was done after 8 o'clock, after the milking was done." That house earned him a reputation as a carpenter, and he gave up dairy farming to grow berries and other crops and to do carpentry. Like his father, Bill Boring served as clerk for the Boring Grade School. He was in education for more than 30 years, becoming clerk for Sandy High School, where the job evolved, and he became the school's first full-time business manager. He retired in 1977. In 1938, he married Frances Adair, who died last year. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sandy Baptist Church. Interment will be in Damascus Pioneer Cemetery. He is survived by his sons, Robert, and Jim Boring of Prineville; a daughter, Shirley Crow of Gresham; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
