My grandfather's sister Maud Bryan was married to a Claude L. Holt and lived in Spokane. According to the 1920 census of Spokane he was born in Nebraska. It looks like his parents were born in Missouri but it's hard to read. There is a son and daughter listed but their names are very hard to read, perhaps Harry and Mildred. Do any of these names look familiar? Hi List, Does anyone have info on a William M. Tosh that died 14 Jan 1913in Spokane, Washington. He wife Mary J. Wadsworth Tosh was probably living at the time of his death. She is not mentioned in the obituary that ran in the newspaper. I do not have a death date for her. Family stories say she married a Mr. Gaines after the death of grandpa Tosh. Would appreciate any info on this family as they are a real puzzle to research. Thanks for any suggestions. Eunice Aldrich

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3BC.2ACE/1741.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Jon, <g> I didn't mean to imply that there might be anything that should be secretive about your dad's obituary. It is, after all, quite public once it's been printed in the newspaper. So, here is what there is: City directories appear to have Jacob Shumaker not in the city of Spokane until 1969 (though he could have been here earlier, and just not listed). He resided at W. 22 1/2 Main, 99201, in 1969, 1970, 1971. This was the location of the Lewis Hotel. There is no listing in the city directory for him after 1971. Death notice in the Spokane Dailey Chronicle, April 10, 1973, states that he entered into rest in Spokane on April 8. His home, W. 300 Trent. There is no listing in the city directory for that address, though it does have listings for 301 1/2, and other corresponding street numbers. This would also be in the 99201 zip code area. Funeral notice in The Spokane Daily Chronicale, April 12, 1973 states "Shumaker, Jacob L. His home, W. 300 Trent. Funeral services will be Friday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Flowers, Riplinger Funeral Home, N. 4305 Division St. Interment Fairmount Memorial Park." This was the one and only date on which a funeral notice was printed. What's interesting about Mr. Shumaker's obituary is that it does not list any survivors or relatives who preceeded in death. His last stated addresses in Spokane indicate perhaps a more transient lifestyle. If the Social Security Death Index indicates his last residence was at a 99204 zip code, perhaps he was receiving his mail and/or social security payments at a residence or P.O. box in that zip code area. City directories reflect that he was retired in those years listed. Hope you find this little bit helpful. Susan

I have recently found out that my grandfather, John George Bishop, married my grandmother, Kathryn McCarthy, in Spokane around 1912. They had five children, three of which were born there. He worked for Northwest Harvester. Would it be possible for someone to check marriages for that time period for me. I would really appreciate it.....my grandmother supposedly came from Ireland and with a name like McCarthy, alas, the proverbial needle in a haystack!! Thanks so much, Carole Bishop Watkins Rocklin, California

I can order the correct films. I wondered about the different numbers you gave from the search results I got from the online catalog. And, while at my Family Hist. Center I'll check their CDs (and floppies) for other info I've been missing through the months. I've always done my searches using the online catalog to allow other researchers who don't have home PCs to use the center's two computers. I didn't know there might be differences in local resources and the online catalog. Karen

It used to be under WA Vital Records. The description of what is on each film is in that list. Last time I checked that was not in the online catalog. I bought a floppy from the FHC and copied that list to a floppy and went home and printed it. Our FHC has a slow noisy printer and 21 pages would have disrupted everyone for quite a while. Our FHC is worried about viruses, so they sell their own floppies at cost to make sure no one brings in a floppy with a virus. Another problem with Spokane county is they list Spokane county deaths separate from Spokane city deaths and they are not on the same films. Charles
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3BC.2ACE/1740 Message Board Post: Charles thank you much. Searching the Film numbers that you provided in the Family History Library Catalogue brings up the full listing of WA Death Indexes and Certificate films. Then searching on film 199160 (1909 for Spokane City plus others) shows 5 items (films). There are no descriptions for these items. Usually one finds details such as "volume 1 is baptisms 1830 to 1870; volume 2 marriages 1840 to..." With that information you know which one of the item's films to order. Item details are missing in the Family History Library Catalog. Perhaps someone has made notes of the certificate numbers corresponding to the item films within the category. (Hopefully) If not, I'll order all the item films for the two years (1909 and 1928) that hold the death certificates I'm looking for. Again, thanks for all the help, Karen
