    1. [WASPOKANE] John/Jack DEMPSEY & ZEISS
    2. Karen Clanin
    3. Looking for information on a lost great uncle, he was born in IN in 1867/69 as Dempsey Bosaw but changed his name (legally) to John/Jack DEMPSEY (his twin sisters bible says birth 1867, obits say 1869). I do not know where the name change occurred, it could have been in Spokane. A distant relative to his wife, Bertha ZEISS, went through the Spokane directorys for me, a John Dempsey first appears in 1908 working as a clerk in the A.D.Mars Co, also listed as clerk in 1909. in 1910 a John Dempsey was working as a bartender, I am guessing this was him in 1910 as he was listed as propr. of The American Bar from 1911 to 1915. His wife was Bertha ZEISS born 1883 in St.Louis, MO and she died at the age of 28 in Spokane, I do have her obit and death certificate, she was listed in obit as Bertha Z Dempsey. Obit said she had a sister in Spokane and there was a Kathryn Zeiss listed in 1911 directory with same residence as Jack Dempsey (looks like boarding house). Any help in learning more about this great uncle would be great appreciated. Karen in CA

    1. [WASPOKANE] County or City Directories 1930-1937
    2. Jim Boyce
    3. Hi all, Can anyone tell me if County Directories exist that include Nine Mile Falls for the period 1930 to 1937? I remember there were such Directories for the 60s onwards when I was a librarian in Spokane, but not if they existed before. The City Directories would not have included Nine Mile Falls for that period would they? Or might there be any other source from which it can be determined if Donald Boyce was resident there during part or all of that period? He appears there with his father James and uncle Benjamin in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses, and gave the same address on his Social Security application in May 1937, but I need to determine if he was there all during the interim. I'll appreciate any help I can get on this. Thanks, James Boyce Geneva, Switzerland

Plkease contact me at my E Mail for more Imformation on Boring's. Maxine Wilton in Roy, Wa. mmwaw@sprynet.com read notice below. FIND A BUSINESS » OR Search By Biz Name, Location » More From The Oregonian Metro East News 'Bill' Boring, grandson of town's namesake, dies at 91 07/25/02 PETER FARRELL NOTE; Funeral Friday at 2:00 P M at Sandy Baptist Church. Sandy Funeral Home there is handling the funeral. BORING -- He was the one they went to when they wanted to know about Boring. Like, "Has it always been Boring?" Willard "Bill" Boring, grandson of the homesteader who gave his name to the community around his farm, died Sunday after spending much of his 91 years humoring people who thought the town and family name was irresistibly funny. His stock response: "It's just a name, not a condition." In his later years, he sometimes wondered whether the joke hadn't been run into the ground. That was after the TV series "Real People" had made a running gag of Boring, Ore., in 1979, and the "Today" show and David Letterman had had their fun. Bill Boring would use the humor about the town's name to point up Boring's small-town virtues and community spirit. His great pride, his son Robert Boring said Wednesday, was the family's Century Farm and the community he served, especially through his work for schools and Kiwanis. "He was one of the last of the old-timers around here,. He knew a lot of the history," Robert Boring said. "He was pretty proud of the community. He was involved in the organization of the fire department, and he was always in on what was going on, particularly through the schools, in churches and with Kiwanis." Among the historical stories Bill Boring could tell were his memories of the 1925 fire that destroyed the original rail station after a bucket brigade spilled much of the water it hauled from a stream. Bill Boring was a member of Kiwanis for 21 years; president of the Sandy, Boring and Gresham Early Risers clubs during those years; and lieutenant governor of Pacific Northwest District Division 66. He was active in several churches. Bill Boring was born Oct. 31, 1910, on the family farm where he died. He grew up in a home built around what had been called Boring's School, which was named for his grandfather, William Harrison Boring, a Civil War veteran who donated the school land. The land was returned to the family in 1904. Bill Boring spent all but about four years of his life, including two years at the University of Oregon, on the farm. "He built the house he died in by himself," Robert Boring said. "I think his bill for labor was about $125. He did everything else, and a lot of that work was done after 8 o'clock, after the milking was done." That house earned him a reputation as a carpenter, and he gave up dairy farming to grow berries and other crops and to do carpentry. Like his father, Bill Boring served as clerk for the Boring Grade School. He was in education for more than 30 years, becoming clerk for Sandy High School, where the job evolved, and he became the school's first full-time business manager. He retired in 1977. In 1938, he married Frances Adair, who died last year. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sandy Baptist Church. Interment will be in Damascus Pioneer Cemetery. He is survived by his sons, Robert, and Jim Boring of Prineville; a daughter, Shirley Crow of Gresham; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
