My grandfather was the youngest child and was apparently adopted after the loss of his parents, changing his name (I can't find a birth certificate). The main corridors under initial consideration were the Susitna and Matanuska Valleys at the head of Cook Inlet, and the Copper River area. Captain William R. Abercrombie was in charge of the Copper River parties, and at the season's end, his suggestion that a trail could be built from Valdez was accepted. Valdez was already a booming town, a base for the prospectors who were heading to the Klondike along a route, discovered in January 1898, that led across the Valdez Glacier. This route, heavily promoted by the Pacific Steam Whaling Company in particular, was an exceptionally difficult and dangerous route, and many deaths resulted. In the early spring of 1899, work started on what would eventually become the Richardson Highway. Cut as a 5-foot-wide pack trail initially, progress was fairly rapid - by the end of the summer, the first 40 miles or so (the most difficult section) had been completed, and 93 miles surveyed and cleared. As well as the regular crews, the government hired destitute prospectors at $50 a month plus board, allowing hundreds to accumulate enough cash to escape the country. Re: Fort Abercrombie, Kodiak, Alaska: In June 1941 780 acres were reserved for the future fort. This is one of three forts in the vicinity of what was the US Navy Operating Base at Womens Bay on Nyman Penninsula, now a USGC base. The Miller Point fort was originally manned in April 1941 by Battery C, 250th Coast Artillery Regiment, California National Guard. They arrived on the Army transport St. Mihiel. It wasn't until April 2, 1943 that it was named for Lt. Col. William R. Abercrombie, a major US Army explorer of Alaska in the 19th century. ============================================================Note: WILLIAM R. ABERCROMBIE was my 1st cousin, 4 times removed. 1. [WASPOKAN] Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness
    2. Hi everyone, It has been recently brought to my attention that many people have never heard of the site, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (aka RAOGK) which is located at http://www.raogk.org/. The site is not new, it has been around for close to eight years. The purpose of RAOGK is to make the acquiring of documentation of your research without having to pay for travel costs, hotel/motel fees and trying to plan vacation time around research time. There are over 4000 volunteers around the world to do the legwork for you at their cost. Successful genealogical research is based upon people helping people. The volunteers unselfishly provide information available in their area to those who live far away. The cost to use the website is free, but reimbursement of the volunteer's expenses for copying, film for pictures, etc., is expected. Their volunteers are people like you, they are not professionals and are not listed on RAOGK site to do in-depth research. They have volunteered on the most part because they have been helped by others in the past and are just "passing the good deed on to others." Visit RAOGK, check out the hundreds of "Thank You's" that have been received from the many recipients of the services over the years and the awards received. If you wish to check for a volunteer in the area of your research, you *MUST* read the FAQ's for Requester's before doing so, a link is available off the main page to the FAQ's and in my signature below. Good Luck in your research Brenda Brenda K. Wolfgram Moore Quebec & U. S. Researcher [email protected] Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness _www.raogk.org_ (http://www.raogk.org/) Have you read the FAQ's lately? _http://www.raogk.org/faq-requesters.htm_ (http://www.raogk.org/faq-requesters.htm)

Just tell me the amount and I would be glad to send you payment in advance. 1. Alma's obit. 2. Edward Nordlund's naturalization paper. 3. Birth records from his daughters (Nov.2 1913 and Sep.18 1917) that were both born in Spokane and if it would be possible to find Walter E. birth record that was born ab. 1921 (in US Census 1930 he was told to be 9 years old) 4. To find Edward in the Census records of 1910 and 1920. 5. Edward and Alma's marriage record. Edward Nordlund might have children that were born before he married Alma. In 1902 he left Sweden and the travelled via New York. New York passenger list has listed him as married and it's noticed that his final destination was Calgary, Canada. There his brother-in-law M. Anderson lived. Unfortunately I haven't found his marriage in Sweden. So his first wives name is unknown so far. But I have found their wedding picture. Perhaps Arthur and Harry were children of that marriage? But I can't understand why they using the last name Johnson? Perhaps Alma had been married before? In his obituary from 1946 he is told to have lived in Spokane for 42 years, so it should be possible to find him I in the US Census for 1910 and 1920. Perhaps his name is unreadable? Sincerely Johan
