    1. Re: [WASNOHOM] Where was Machias, WA
    2. You can find the current location of Machias, WA, by going to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) website at http://geonames.usgs.gov . Under Query GNIS, click on U.S. and territories In the Feature Name block, enter Machias (or any name you are looking for) In the State of Territory block, enter Washington For "Machias," the results show three entries where that name appears: a Populated Place, a School and an Airport. Each entry includes the latitude and longitude of the location. If you click on one of the names, GNIS will take you to a page with additional information. On this page you can click on four mapping options which will show you a topographic map, an aerial photo, a map used for the census, and a watershed map. GNIS doesn't help much with early settlement names unless they still appear on recent maps, but its great for finding mapped names in dozens of "classes," such as populated place, cemetery, river, tower, dam, etc. Try it, you'll like it. Oh! the populated place of Machias is located a little southeast of Lake Stevens, which is east of Everett, Washington. Bob Witherspoon 360-734-9835
