The Snohomish County birth record for Datus Morton shows that he was the illegitimate son of Henry C. Morton, 58 and Hallie F Betts, 35. The birth was reported by Mrs. Martha Betts, a possible relative. I don't find Henry C Morton or the Betts family in the 1900 census. This info from www.digitalarchives.wa.gov I also find Datus Morton as stepson living with Martha (previously Betts and informer on birth certificate) married for 1 year and 6 months in her second marriage to O S Sanders living in the Wallace Pct of Snohomish County. The mother is no where near them in the census (that I can find). There is quite an extensive military records file on Stillman Otis Sanders on the same site as listed above. She applied for a pension and admission to the Soldier's Home in Retsil. Not sure what happened to Datus..., but sounds interesting.
