This is what I have found...he was born about 1842 in Maine, USA and worked as a lumberman. He had a brother listed as Jas. Mercereau on a Pierce County, Washington, USA 1889 census who was listed as a farmer and born about 1844 in Maine also. His parents were both born in France. Joseph married Matilda Le Beau/Labine on 17 Jul 1879 in Snohomish County, Washington, USA. They had nine children together in Washington state.
