Tallman Sunday afternoon at Odd Fellows hall wee very simple, very impressive and of such a character as to markedly show the respect and regard in which the deceased was held by his fellow townspeople. Two members of the Commercial Club, which organization Mr. Tallman served faithfully in the capacity of secretary, were present in numbers, uniting with the old soldiers and ladies of the Relief Corps in paying honor and respect to the dead. Rev. Axel Sannelson, of Everett, conducted the services and was aided by the Congregational choir with Mrs. A.W. Burke at the piano. Mrs. S.B. Moore and Comrades J.H. Pownall each spoke for the Relief Corps and the G.A.R. and Mr. C.E. Ritchie, president of the Commercial Club, paid a glowing tribute to the memory of the deceased for the affectiouste regard in which he is held and for his continued efforts in behalf of the town. When the cortege left the hall on the way to th! e cemetery, the Monroe band played a funeral march as the people filed out. The pall bearers were; Mssrg. C.E. Ritchie, W.E. Mansford, E.T. Bascum, I.J. Oliver, L. L. Stephens and J.C. Falconer men who represent the highest citizenship of Monroe and vicinity. The death of Mr. Tallman is a severe blow, not only to the members of his family, but to a large circle of people who know well his generous, kindly disposition. The editor knew him as a man whose charity covered all things and all persons. He had little prejudice except for petty meanness's and real viciousness and he was blessed with a most sympathetic understanding of the troubles, faults and pains that enter so largely into life. Ephraim Stephen Tallman- he reversed his given names in later life-was born at Gerard, PA, on Oct, 14, 1839. He removed to Marine, MN, in 1852. He was married to Amanda Lawton in 1861 and came to Monroe in 1901, arriving on Thanksgiving Day. The couple had twelve children, four sons a! nd eight daughters, of whom nine are living, all in this vicinity exce pt a daughter whose home is in New York. Mr. Tallman was an energetic progressive pioneer of the early Middle West days and a citizen whose life affords a most worth example, as it was entirely at the service of his country and his fellow citizens and who ever performed the duty that lay to hand. He steadily went along from one position of honor and respect to another, doing his utmost to advance the conditions in the community in which he lived. As a soldier he was a member of 7th MN Infantry Co. C enlisting 8/1862 and being mustered out on 5/22/1865. Almost immediately after being sworn in the regiment was sent to Ft. Snelling to face the terrible outbreak of the Sioux. Indians. On Oct 7, 1863, the regiment was ordered south and was in the battle of Tupelo, the pursuit of Price, the oxford rain and at the battle of Nashville. Returning to his home in Minnesota after the war, Mr. Tallman at once took up the pursuit of peaceful projects and showed his energetic and pro! gressive character in starting the first newspaper in Kanabec county., also the first sawmill and the first shingle mill and the first flour mill. He served his country in different official capacities for many years, serving one term as country attorney, one term and surveyor, three terms as register of deeds and four terms as county auditor, giving to the county government eighteen years of his labor besides looking after his other enterprises. To the many kind friends who so willingly extended their offices during the time of our late bereavement we want to extend our most appreciative thanks. Especially we want to mention the members of the Monroe Commercial Club, the G.A.R. and the Relief Corps as well as the choir of the Congregational church. Mrs. S.E.
