Some of the below you have, posted it for the archives and so others can see what was found to not repeat the same searches. Also, once you contact the owner of the family tree having Orie Nortum, if it appears the family was originally from Norway, I would not be surprised. CA Death Index: Norman R. Slater, born 1/22/1909 in Washington, died 09/25/1974 in San Francisco. CA Birth Index: Robert Elmer Slater, born 10/28/1931, mothers maiden: Nortum, born in San Diego. Richard Lee Sater, born 21 May 1934, mothers maiden: Nortum, born in SD. The 1920 Census for South Snohomish, Snohomish County, WA Charles D. Slater, 59, born in Ohio Anna, 48, born in Wisconsin Eugene, 29, born in Washington Zelma, 22, WA Elmer, 19, WA Norman, 10, WA --In 1910, the family was in Snohomish Co, with an additional daughter: Retha, age 7; and Norman was "George B", age 1 3/12. The census was enumerated on 22 April 1910, so this age matches the 1/22/1909 date as identified above. So, either the name was given as George, or the enumerator made the mistake. At this point, I found your family tree posted, it confirms my findings. It shows Billie Nortum born 9 Aug 1912, died 13 Aug 2002 in Coos Bay. I ran just "Nortum" in the 1920 Census, only 17 of them, MOST were in Pennsylvania. Only one possible: The 1920 Census for Maltby, Snohomish County, WA Lucile Nortum, age 7, born in US to both parents born in US David Nortum, age 9, born in US to both parents born in US, both living as boarder in the home of: Armitage, Benj. F, 49, born in Iowa to both parents born in US, Farmer Millie E, 51?, born in Minnesota to both parents born in Norway. Kenneth E, 6, born in North Dakota --The 1930 census shows the Armitage family, but no others. A David Eugene Nortum died 26 August 1929 and is buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery, Section B, Site 600. He was a Seaman 2d Class, US Navy. If the same David, he would have been about 18. The 1910 Census for Seattle, King Co. WA. renting 4213 6th Ave. Orie A. Nortum, age 22, born in Pennsylvania, Laborer/on street, married 1 year Etta Jemshia?(as transcribed) 17, born in PA to both parents born in PA The 1930 Census for Maltby, Snohomish County, WA (City matches), owning on Knight Road. Orie A. Nortum, age 41, born in PA, to father born in Colorado, mother in PA, laborer/mill work. Divorced, first married age 21. Mae E. Stringer, 32, servant, married, Edward J and Opal P, her children. The 1930 Census for Grand Mound, Thurston County, WA Lucille Norheim(as transcribed), however, the handwriting "appears" to be Lucille Nortum, the dot over the "i" is to long to be a dot. But was it a slash for a "t", but missed? She is an Inmate, age 17, born in Washington to both parents born in Pennsylvania. The age is accurate, both parents born in PA is also meeting criteria. Not enough information to fully determine. The World War I Draft Registration Card image database has "Ovie" A. Nortum, born April 8th 1888 in Smicksburg, PA. Married and THREE children, living at 653 E. 43rd Street, Seattle. Works for the city. Washington Death Index has Orie A. Nortum, died 12 April 1973 in Snohomish County. The Washington Archives: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx has Orie A. Nortum marriage to Mary Ellen Stringer in 1931, Whatcom County. Witnesses were E.E. Oberlatz, and Lillian Pierce (No help here). An image is available online. There is a family tree posted that includes Orie, but no information posted online. Suggest you contact the owner for "potential" information. A second tree, the Nordheim-Emery, posted by "savedbyfaitha" shows Orie and Etta Rishel had 4 children, one a John Nortum born 1915, died 1985. The first two children were female, the second two were boys. The WA Death INdex shows John H. Nortum died 10 March 1985. It appears Orie and Etta were the parents, but not enough proof. I'd get the obits for those listed above. I'd contact the owner of the Nordheim-Emery tree. For obits: The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks. --In a recent email I've received, the library receives about 60 inquiries a day. The WA State Legislature and Governor are looking for cutbacks, this "might" close the library, or seriously cutback on services. The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness also have volunteers. Read the guidelines first. Set for Snoho County: http://www.raogk.org/washingt4.htm Ron Bestrom Tacoma, WA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
