I really didn't know that about obits because I don't tend to work with them. I too am a long time researcher and you were again right. This was not only a "shotgun" approach but one in the dark, too. What I know is that the Cyrus and Margaret you found are the Willis family I'm trying to hunt down. They originally came from Ohio but by 1856 were in Lee county, Iowa where more Willis's were born. To make a long story short, Cyrus and Margaret had John W Willis in 1844, who in turn had James H Willis 1858 in Iowa. (Given that census dates have about 5 year's leeway in them...). This is the man that married one of my great aunts' Ida Bell Hall, and I am truthfully trying to locate some descendants. I just never know how much info to provide because I have so much. The problem I'm having is that Ida died in MI in 1900 with a childbirth infection and their son Warren Willis was a fireman out there in WA who died in his 30's. Maybe fire-related. I have been unable for years to track down the birthplace of Ida, hoping Warren's, or another descendant's, obit might have it. Without that place I can't locate my great grandparents Oscar and Alice Hall, who parented Ida. Ida was their 1st born and parents (from my experience) tend to have their 1st kid where they get married. I have never been able to find that place even going county by county in Michigan. So I was hoping to find an obit on one of them that might give a clue where in Michigan, where I live, they came from. Warren St Clair, James and Ida Willis's son, was born 5 Dec 1885 in Antrim county, Michigan, and died in Spokane 11 Jan, 1920. more of the Willis clan was out there but the people above are the descendants I need to locate, if not an obit. Again, thanks for your time and the obit explanation. I never gave that one a thought. Becky in MI Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Obituaries were not as popular back in 1916 as today. Most people did not have a published obituary unless they were famous/imfamous or a victim of crime or major fire/event. Those "obits" were then usually written by a newspaper reporter. There "could" have been a death notice written by a funeral home; but, these were more of an advertisement than an obituary. Also, most people did not wish to pay for any newspaper obit, as those that knew the deceased in a small town would have known of their death; or, they were not living in an area long enough to generate much interest. So, there COULD be an obituary; but first you HAVE to identify the name, where and when they died. Ron Bestrom Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can spend a lot of time looking through each and not find who you seek. They are only as good as the transcriber. They are only as good as the date and place of death, as older stones, plaques or cards disappear, damaged, destroyed, etc. AND, most are not fully transcribed. I'd look at Evergreen Cemetery, it has thousands of interments and only a few listed online. First, check with those in the family or having knowledge of them to see if they know where they are buried: --I found a family tree of Mardon4042 that identifies Ezra Frank Hopkins died on 4 May 1981 in Everett, born 26 Jan 1912 in Concrete, married to Donna Louise Swartwood, born 13 Feb 1916, died 22 OCt 1976 in Marysville, Snohomish Co, WA. --A 19gab40 also had this information. ----I sent a contact request to these two to help if they could. A ldyk171@yahoo.ca has these people in a family tree "possibly" owned by a Mary Swarthout Rindfleisch...also see: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/e/Kathy-Hoeldke-/index.html Second, if you don't have the obit for them, that might also have the information you seek. Send a request...for free... to the Washington State Library for a search. Just send them the date of death, place of death: Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Now, there are also volunteers in the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness that can visit the cemeteries...do the initial lookups. READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST...you can't ask more than one at a time for help. Good morning, List People - Below is a message from Barbara George of the SnoCo Museum - -------- <>Hello Everyone! <> <>We will be moving approximately 2 (of 4) segments of our collection to the Carnegie on December 18th and 19th. That is a Thursday and Friday. This will include boxes, shelving, office stuff, and whatever else we can safely get moved. We will need volunteers for any time between now and the 18th and 19th. We need people to label, repack, wrap, etc. in prep of the move. Tracy and Tara will let you know what and how if you will let us know when (if) you're available. On the days of the move, we need people to hand off boxes to assist the movers with getting them out of the windows and to the truck and then at the Carnegie, to put them on the designated shelves. Volunteer help will help us save moving fees. The labeling will start Thursday. Each item or box has a number and a place on the schematic and each has a color. Each room has a color and a place for the numbered item. After that, heavy flexibility will be required. So, let me know if you can help. We know it's the Holiday season and everyone has lots to do so we value any time you are able to give. Thanks! Barbara George BG.SnoCoMuseum@comcast.net 425-345-7349 -------- This is a great opportunity for those of us who live here to have a hand in preserving the heritage of this most wonderful area for our children and grandchildren! Regards to all, Marge
