Surnames: Smith, Herman,Larmont Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VEC.2ACI/3711 Message Board Post: Everett Daily Herald Two months short of his 92nd birthday, Captain Joseph F. Smith, sailor, inventor, shipbuilder and owner and long identified with the road business on the Riverside of Everett, died at an Everett hospital Sunday morning. A short time ago he fell and fractured a hip an injury from which he never recovered. In 1864 the family migrated to Chicago making the trip by boat via the Great Lakes. The voyage was beset with danger and their ship was rammed and sunk but the accident didn’t cause the young man’s love for ships and sailing for that same year he became a deckhand on a Great Lakes schooner. He rose rapidly in his chosen trade and in 1866 became an owner of a ship which he later sold. In 1870 he built his first ship a schooner and in the preceding years he o! wned may including one steamer. In 1902 Captain Smith came to Everett and that year at the Eclipse mill he built a tugboat for service on the Snohomish river. He later sold the boat and became the manager of the company that purchased the craft from him. For many years he worked on the river and conducted stores on the Riverside, his final retail establishment being a small store he constructed in the front of his home at 2431 Pine street, which store he operated until about a year ago. Captain Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of Pilgrim lodge No.187 I.O.O.F., of Everett. Leslie Rule is the dau. of true crime writer Ann Rule. Refs. to Pike Place Market and Geeorgetwon Castle in Seattle are sited. COMMENT: What surprised me was the name Windsor Vest who has been quite active in the Snohomish Historical Society, and was recent President of the Society when she had to give up that office. Her husband, Keith, and Windsor continue to be very active in the Society. What surprised me is that I have known the Vests for quite some time, but I never heard that their house was a ghostly house at the corner of 3rd and I in Snohomish. The Victorian House next to Soap Suds Row on Avenue A was well known to me back into the mid '30s when I used to play with a group of friends who lived on Ave. A (also my Herald paper route 1938-39-40 era). The Whyte Family lived in that Victorian House then and we knew the family well. The 3rd story of that house was not used but a ladder was used to get up into it. I never got up there, but there was never stories about that house being haunted, though we used to kid about it with each other at times. That Victorian house needed paint badly, but so did a lot of the old homes in Snohomish at the time, who had known the Depression Years in which people were lucky to have a place to live, and food to eat as those were "hard times" for such frivolities as paint, even though there were painters, and paint stores. The underpinning of that Victorian House was very open and exposed so as to be able to see under the southern portion of that large house. The Whyte had Whyte's Funeral Parlor at the SW corner of First Street and Maple downtown Snohomish. We knew the family well, and we would have known if that House was haunted. One of the members of the Whyte family is still living and I can imagine the look on her face when she saw this article about her place being haunted after all these years. I know that her eyes rolled and her knowledge of the area came to fore with me many times when the fiasco of the Carnegie Library, Snohomish being haunted by the ghost of Catharine McMurchey by newspapers, TV, and staff when the pictures that were captioned as Catharine's but were actually of her sister Ann. Then the Oxford Tavern was another site for sore eyes when it became ghost inhabited by ladies of the night. These all came conveniently around Hallowe'en time, but even dragged on for some time. I haven't heard anything about the new 8 Million $ Library being "inhabited" nor anything about the old Carnegie Library that is up for grabs. The Oxford has been awfully quiet. Surely these ghosts must be ready for the Season and there are a lot of other places for them to play. The one we used to think was haunted was the big old house with turret between Maple and Union on 4th Street Snohomish. We used to sled past it and always remarked that it "must be haunted". Someone came along and updated that old house so that it looks much less Spooky than it did when we were kids in those Depression Years. I recall visiting the Myrick Family and went to the very top of the turret room where there was a working crystal radio that one of the Myricks had made. That house was also on my Herald paper route in the late 30s. It was fun to rumor but we never did hear of anyone with a genuine haunted home or site, other than what we concocted for the fun of it. Where will these ghostly apparitions take place next in Snohomish's Alley! Carroll in Snohomish * * * 30 * * *

    3. Do I believe in ghosts? Not really, but why give them a chance to break my legs, eh? When it comes to Genealogy research, I must confess that I've made several critical breakthroughs since my Mother passed in July. Some are on her side, some on my Father's. She knew about my work, he didn't. Something has been coaxing the spirits to aid me this year! 1. Snohomish's Ghost-to-Ghost ESP:
    2. Carroll Clark
    3. Ghost Alert ! Some of you will recall my articles re the "Ghost Sightings" of my long time friend, Catharine McMurchey ( or y). Just the other day, as I was driving, it occurred to me that nothing has come out in the Herald, or Tribune about ghost sightings in our new 8 million $ library in Snohomish, or in the old Carnegie Library where her ghost had been the subject of newspapers, and TV coverage. I reported on the mix-up in identification of pictures of Miss Murchey showing pictures of her sister, Anna. I have, yet, to see a picture of Catharine, except when she was very young and shown with her sisters. It must be ESP, but in this morning's Herald, front page, was a familiar picture of the huge Victorian house with cupulo ground to garret round column with the label in red "GHOST ALLEY". It seems that "Some Snohomish residents are convinced their homes are haunted." as part of the caption under the color pix of said house. But, we must wait for Tuesday's Herald to read what has been written re this topic. I relish reading this article for a number of reasons: I was born in Snohomish in 1924, and I continued to live here over 25 yrs. when I got married. I would have known about ghosts in Snohomish, as the news traveled fast in Snohomish, even w/o wires, phones, etc. As kids, we used to fantasize about certain houses (usually empty ones) being "haunted" but we would have know if they really were. Isn't it interesting how these stories become concocted to fit the "Season" of Hallow'd Evening, or Halloween. The attention of some becomes focused on an idea, and the idea(s) come to fruition via the mind games we play with each other. What Other "mind games" are being played for you these days - won't you be glad when we have to face Reality, again! I will write and make ref to the article in The Herald when it comes out tomorrow in the paper. You know, we all must become "psyched out" on such matters so that we will be informed as to what goes on in such old places as Snohomish. I wonder what they have going for them in Mukilteo, or Monroe, or Index? Don't they have ghosts in other places, or are they all back in New England, or England, etc. Do I believe in ghosts? Not as yet, but I put the idea of that phenomena up on my "shelf" uintil I have enough evidence to say that I do or do not. I do know that some very weird things have happened to me since I've been into Genealogy. So much so that I wrote to you using the Subject - "They Want to Be Found". It has happened so often that it makes me wonder - as it seems much more than coincidence that this phenomena persisits. I like it, as when I "give up" on something genealogically related, it suddenly "comes to me" via mail, e-mail, and various ways that are not "explainable" or "readily understood". A number of you wrote to me with your experiences along this line, so it is not just myself who experiences this "happening" which we cannot explain. I had an Aunt who lived to be 101 yrs. and she and I often had this unusual experience of ESP-like communications. Her daughter, who used to baby-sit me is now 10 yrs older than me, aged 90, still drives, lives by herself in her own home in Seattle. She and I have had the same ESP-like experiences and we communicate this phenomena when we talk to each other on the phone. Paranormal phenomena is interesting but not all of us relate to it easily. I think of this when I watch the weather forcasts, then what really happens. I got quite a kick out of our tour of KOMO studios, broadcast AM-FM, and TV. When we saw the Weather forecaster's modules, there was a brand new copy of the Farmer's Almanac on each forecaster's desk! This brought chuckles to our mind-boggled minds as we saw what goes on behind the scenes of a first class radio/TV station. This tongue-in-cheek goes on among all the stations that produce our entertainment. Watch for "Snohomish Ghost-to-Ghost" reporting as our ancestors may be watching us - they must be amazed at what they perceive! Happy Halloween! And for those who see the other side of the coin -Happy ________! Carroll in Snohomish. * * * 30 * * *

Surnames: Howe Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VEC.2ACI/3702 Message Board Post: Everett Daily Herald 10/07/1902 Sam Howe, one of the earliest pioneers of this region. Died yesterday at his old homestead three miles west of Snohomish. He had resided on this same place since 1861. He was born in Devonshire, England, December 29, 1836 and in 1853 went to the Crimean wars, serving for three years. He fought in the battles of Alma and Inkerman and after being wounded was for a long time in the hospital of Balaklava. He came to America and in 1858 came to Puget sound and spent two; years in the employ of the Port Madison Mill company. In 1860, in the company with John Harvey he came to Snohomish and located on what is known as the Del Ford ranch, just across the river from town. At that time the metes and bound of the ranch were not definitely known and after the survey was made he was disappointed to know that some of the land he valued most was across the line of the Harvey ranch. He sold his interests and went down to Eby slough where he located the place on which he died. Mr. How! e was ever an active citizen, and took an interest in politics, being a republican. He left a widow to mourn his loss, but no children, his five little ones having died within a month at the time of the epidemic of black diphtheria, which in 1878 cause great sorrow in this community and laid low many people old and young, but of all the sad stories of that dark hour none are so sad as the tale of the death of his babies. The hour for the funeral has not yet been decided upon, but it will probably take place Thursday from the family residence.

    1. Reason Thompson-Elizabeth Criswell Thompson Tracy-Ohio>Illinois
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VEC.2ACI/3701 Message Board Post: Reason Thompson married Elizabeth Criswell on March 10, 1836 in East Union TWP, Wayne County, Ohio. The actual marriage certificate shows them as “Reson Tomson” and Elizabeth “Criteswell”. The marriage index shows Reason as “Resor” Tomson. Reason Thompson was born around 1809 one of 12 children of John Thompson and Hiley Dorland. Elizabeth Criswell, born 1818, was the daughter of James Criswell and Elisabeth Forgy Criswell. Elizabeth’s brothers were William and James F. Criswell. Many of the Thompson/Criswell descendants are buried in the Thompson and East Side Cemeteries just East of Fredericksburg, Ohio. Reason Thompson vanishes around 1858. Elizabeth Criswell Thompson re-marries Elijah Tracy, son of Bezaleel Tracy and Mary First, on June 23, 1859 in Plaine Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Although Elijah Tracy was raised in Wayne County, he had been living with his first wife Mary Albertson, in Princeville, Peoria County, Illinois since around 1844. Elizabeth and Elijah combine their families in Princeville, Illinois where Elizabeth dies on September 22, 1885. For a certainty, Elizabeth brought her son, my GG Grandfather, Alfred P. Thompson (b. April 1, 1851 in Ohio) along with her to Princeville. In addition, there MAY HAVE BEEN two additional children: One an Alice B. Thompson and the other Reason Benjamin Thompson. Reason Benjamin Thompson was born December 22, 1856 in Fredericksburg, Ohio. He married Nancy Adelia Sturm on Nov. 11, 1876 in Bradford, Stark County, Illinois only a few miles from Princeville, Illinois. He died February 26, 1936 in Edmonds, Washington. I am seeking any information regarding what happened to Reason Thompson around 1858 and his final resting place. In addition I would like to know if the Reason Benjamin Thompson who married Nancy Adelia Sturm was the son of Reason Thompson and Elizabeth Criswell. Thank you!
