Hello, List Folks - SnoCo's own Dave Ault sent me this notice to be forwarded to the list... I know that for some of us, attending this most important and useful presentation means (#GASP#) crossing the county line... well worth it, though... Marge *************** The 10 September 2005 meeting of the Seattle Genealogical Society Computer Interest Group presents "Using Computers for Genealogy, The Basics". This program is intended for individuals who are either contemplating using a computer for genealogy, are just getting started with a computer, or are considering changes in their present hardware, software or peripherals. Experienced users are encouraged to attend to share their knowledge and experience with both the audience and the speaker. All members and friends are welcome to invite a member or friend who they believe will find this program of value. Computer Interest Group Chair, Dave Ault's presentation will begin with an explanation of some basic computer terminology. He will describe some computer software commonly used for genealogy and suggest ways that each type might be beneficial to your research and publishing tasks. Dave will explain and demonstrate some basic computer hardware components and peripheral equipment. He will discuss the tradeoffs to be made in selecting particular types of hardware. Finally, he will provide some options for Internet access and suggest places to get further help. This meeting will be held on Saturday, 10 September 2005, from 10 a.m. to Noon in the second floor conference room at NARA. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is located at 6125 Sand Point Way NE in Seattle. Free parking is available in the NARA lot. On the Metro Transit #74 and #75 bus lines. Stairs and ramp available to NARA's front door. Stairs and elevator access to the second floor conference room. I see that the officials are recommending that we NOT send stuff directly at this time. There is too much confusion and they are not set up to distribute items of this type at this time. They recommend donating cash to the Red Cross or Salvation Army, who are equipped to provide needed items where they are needed, rather than trying to find people who can use the items we might send. Once things get settled down a little, I am sure that your items will be welcomed, but at present they might be more likely to get in the way. Let them get the system working again first. And, as of last night, two "infants" have died of dehydration there ! This week I've already posted on the MA List that I would really like to go by a 20-pack of ..Toilet Paper.. and ship it down there ! The more I watch the News, though, I see where "basic human needs" go way beyond toilet paper. They need FOOD and medicine. They need .. diapers and baby food and formula .. and senior citizens need diapers, also ! They need ..DRY.. clothes ... including undergarments ! How many of us have food, medicine, and "sanitary products" in our homes - which we don't really need ? How many of us have clothes in our home which we really don't need ! Do you have summer clothes you bought this year which you might not wear next summer ? Those people in Louisiana and Mississippi have probably been "living in" the same pair of shorts and t-shirt and underwear .. for a week ! And, they probably arrived at whereever they are being "sheltered" -- soaking wet ! My suggestion is to go to the supermarkets and/or stores and pick up their unwanted cardboard boxes .. and start .. filling them up ! Or, I've found out that "banker's boxes" at the office-supply stores are good for sending packages. I went to www.switchboard.com and found out the address: "Katrina Survivors" c/o Louisiana Superdome 1500 Poydras St New Orleans, LA 70112 OR, we could just send our "we care" packages to the following address: "Katrina Survivors" c/o, the Postmaster New Orleans, LA 70112 Even if the New Orleans Post Office has been destroyed, the packages should go to their "regional Post Office" - and they can decide what to do with them ! And, ... wouldn't it be nice .. if the United States Postal Service .. would allow us to mail our "we care" packages ... for free ! And, the same goes for .. UPS .. and FED EX ... I had occasion to want to use UPS to mail 2 packages at different times to Europe ... and I was "SHOCKED" at how much they wanted to charge me ! $50 for a very small, lightweight package, and $350 for a medium-heavy "banker's box." .... I know very well that the "American Red Cross" NEEDS money, and they "always" say ... DO NOT ..send "care packages." BUT ..... this is different ! In our adult lifetime, we have not seen and heard about .. such wide-spread DESTRUCTION .. and -- human need ! If you cannot send "we care" packages, then I have found that even www.ebay.com is offering a way to "contribute" to the American Red Cross - whether you are a Seller or a Buyer. I will be sending this message to other "State" Lists which I belong to ! Please feel free to pass my "request / suggestion" along to whichever Lists you belong to ! A SEPARATE SUGGESTION? Sit down and write a letter to these families - tell them we DO care ! Offer them as much sympathy as you can ! I'll bet that right now those 10,000 - Plus - people .. feel "totally isolated" from the rest of their State - and definitely isolated from the rest of the U.S. ! And, please say a sincere prayer to "your Higher Being" .. that food and drinking water .. get to "Katrina survivors" -- YESTERDAY ! And, not arriving for the first time - this coming weekend ! I know very well that the "American Red Cross" NEEDS money, and they "always" say ... DO NOT ..send "care packages." BUT ..... this is different ! This is different and the answer is still the same! Please don't try to send packages to New Orleans. They are evacuating the city. Take the money you would spend and send it to the Red Cross. $1, 5, 10. I live in Austin, TX, and we have refugees here. People all over Texas are offering their homes to these folks and to the others who will follow. Even in Austin, if you leave a care package other organizations are picking them up so they can be distributed appropriately. Bettye

"Echos of the Blue and Gray" A time to remember the original veterans of the greater Everett area. What: The dedication of a monument and ceremony to honor and remember the several hundred Civil War Veterans that rest at Evergreen Cemetery. Why: On Sept 10, 1899, the Grand Army of the Republic veterans organization, purchased a section of the cemetery to bury their needy comrades. Later the GAR tried to raise money for a monument to honor all, but the effort failed and now, one hundred years later, we want to fulfill those wishes and finalize those noble efforts that were lost and forgotten so long ago. When: Saturday, September 10, 2005 - 2:00 PM at the GAR Section near the Lych Gate in the pioneer section of Evergreen Cemetery. Confirmed and desired participants: Washington Civil War Association, David Dilgard, Historian and curator of the Northwest Room, Jim Shipman, Evergreen Cemetery historian, Rev. Charles Jackson, Second Baptist Church, Everett, US Congressman or Senator, Mayor of Everett, Sons of Union Veterans and Sons of the Confederecy. The Ceremony will include a flag ceremony, dedication of the monument, speakers, reenactors, representing both the North and the South and a Civil War cannon salute. Organizations of a Historical or Military nature are invited to have a table set up with their information available. Contact Jim Shipman for exhibit tables reservations. 425-330-7937. Ok... this is coming to Seattle... but I thought the Snohomish people might be interested... webpage.... http://storycorps.net/ newspaper .... Families gather to share history Associated Press MOSCOW, Idaho - Katherine Sterling sat with her 90-year-old mother Catherine for an hour inside a gleaming Airstream trailer with dark-tinted windows, asking about her life, her most memorable moments, her biggest regrets and other personal questions as a technician recorded the conversation. They were the first people in Idaho to participate in the traveling StoryCorps "Mobile Booth" project, a 10-year effort to collect remembrances from a quarter-million Americans from around the country and preserve them digitally for participants, local historical societies and the Library of Congress. "I had my mother here today because we take every opportunity like this," Katherine Sterling, 57, told the Lewiston Tribune. "We never know if we're going to have another one." Considered the most ambitious oral-history project ever undertaken, the soundproof Airstream trailer studio that arrived in this north-central Idaho community Thursday for two weeks of recording sessions has borne witness to tales of immigration in New York, stories about the Dust Bowl and the Depression in North Dakota, and reminiscing about forests in Montana. In the hundreds of interviews that have taken place since the portable project hit the road May 19 in Washington, D.C., the box of tissues on the table between two orange couches is frequently used. "Sometimes it's life-changing for people," said James Angelos, 29, a StoryCorps facilitator from Brooklyn, N.Y., who is recording interviews. "It's a sacred space that's created." He and other facilitators brief the questioner and subject on interviewing techniques before turning on the microphones. Afterward, they catalog the topics discussed in a database that future researchers will use. National Public Radio is also broadcasting select interviews during the undertaking. "I thought it was a great way to preserve family history," said Kathy Dahmen, 60, who brought her 83-year-old father, Rinehart Dahmen, for an interview. Both are from Pullman, Wash., a few miles west across the state line. "She wants to see what I can dig up, you know," said Rinehart, who worked at the Washington State University creamery for 28 years making ice cream, milk and cheese. Katherine Sterling said the memories captured from her mother are as much for future generations of Sterlings as they are for academic researchers. "I like to think a great-great-grandchild might pick up the CD sometime and receive a message they might be looking for," she said. "I would encourage everyone who has a loved one, family member or enemy - interview them." The Mobile Booth will travel to Seattle for two weeks of interviewing from Sept. 7-26. His OBITUARY is as follows, taken from the Everett Daily Herald: The date of the funeral of Eldridge MORSE, who died at the Snohomish hospital Monday, has not been set. Arrangements are awaiting the arrival of relatives. Eldrige MORSE was born on a farm near Wallingford, Ct. in 1847. At an early age he began studying and entered the army at New York harbor at the age of 17 years. He was a member of Co. C of the Tenth US engineer’s battalion and was with the army of the Potomac for 18 months and was present at the surrender of Lee to Grant at Richmond. From there he went to San Francisco, Ca. where he received an honorable discharge from the army. He then went to visit his old home at Wallingford, after which he went to Albion, IA, where he taught school and practiced law and was admitted to the bar at Iowa in 1869. He next attended the University of MI from which he graduated in 1870. He married one of his oldest Iowa pupils, Mollie TURNER, and then came to Seattle where he staye! d a few months before arriving at Snohomish in 1972. He took Fanny OLIVER as his Second wife, but divorced her shortly after marriage. He then took his third wife, in 1887 who died in 1900.
