    3. Armistice Day November 11, is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918, ending World War I, after four years of conflict. Armistice means truce. President Woodrow Wilson's original proclaimation issued in 1919 ended with this sentiment: To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation. Veterans Day. After World War II, Amercia's newest veterans needed their day also. In 1954 President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day and called on all citizens to observe November 11 by remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought and to rededicate themselves to promoting PEACE These are just a few of the webpages and resources available ONLINE WEBPAGES FEDERAL http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 Department of Veterans' Affairs the Grave Locator search engine. http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html The National Archives for requesting service records. www.archives.gov The National Archives main page. 3. CC has been involved with this terrible situation since nearly day one. And it just gets weirder. The records of the funeral home that did many of the burials in the cem. have been "misplaced/lost". The city has spent lots of money on it.... The sad part... the people that should be supporting the cemetery aren't. The seniors have a vested interest... they want a senior center built on it. The historical society... have used actual head stones from the site as part of a mock pioneer cem. (for display purposes) on another section of the old cem. Of course, old highway 2 didn't have to go through the center of the cemetery... but the city fathers at that time... were business men worried about business... Keep up the good work CC.... 3. On this subject -- I remember hearing that they were going to be moving any remains still in the cemetery, and doing DNA testing to determine which were Native American, so those could go to the local tribe. Is this still in the works? I'm wondering about accessing those tests to determine if the remains of a relation are in fact still there -- and hopefully to get his grave properly marked, wherever it ends up. 1. Snohomish Cem. debacle-50 graves Found:
    2. Carroll Clark
    3. Thursday November 3, 2005 issue of the Everett HERALD has an article in its Local Section which reads, and I quote: Search uncovers more remains than expected Includes a Map for the proposed Site of a new Senior Center in Snohomish to be located at the Snohomish Cemetery site after it becomes decertified legally. The present Snohomish Senior Center rests on top of this cemetery today and for a number of years. The Snohomish Cemetery located at Cypress and 2nd Street had had a Hwy 2 cut through northern mid portion of the cem. for the 1947 cut made for Hwy 2 egress and ingress at the Eastern side of the City that goes over the Pilchuck Reiver to or from Monroe (et al eastern places). The Snohomish Cemetery had been abandoned over the years from about 1924 on (Pilchuck Julia, Princess of the Pilchuck Tribe, locally was buried there in 1923, said to be one of the last of the burials there). Snohomish City owned the Cemetery from the time of its inception in the late 1800s. Tombstones became in disarray by vandals who saw fit to vandalize the grave stones and the premises. Grasses and weeds were allowed to take over - little or nothing was done to clean up or improve the appearance of the Cem. It was in the state of abandonment even though it was a pioneer cemetery. Records were "lost" strayed, or "stolen" so that only research could find a list of names of those known to have been buried there. This included Indians )now known as Native Americans) as well as Caucasians. During a time when the Snohomish Cemetery came to fore with a law suit and interest some years ago, there were those who claimed that there were no remains left in the old cemetery. At first, this seemed to be true when archeological sensing didn't find anything (ground penetrating redar technique), until a more thorough search with more sophisitacted technology, and dig found the lower extremity of a skeleton - a foot, ankle, and lower leg portion could be plainly seen by the Low Family members, and myself. This incident changed those skeptics who claimed there were no remains left in the Cem. Read the article in the Herald on the front page for the article and the map showing the Site. The article continues on page B2 where the caption to the rest of the article reads Remains: Not all the graves were relocated after highway was built in 1947. The debacle ensues: The digs may relocate the remains found, whether they are Indian (Nat. Amer) or Caucasian for this South portion of Snohomish Cemetery which is on the South side of the 2nd Street access over a bridge across the Pilchuck River (formerly called the Hwy 2 cut) but there is a North portion of the Snohomish Cemetery which has not been excavated and it is a part of the original cemetery and still is except for the portion for the highway access through a portion of the cemetery as of 1947 Cut. This North portion, still a part of the original cemetery has a log cabin, several buildings, a house, and an array of several tombstones to form a sort of pioneer village, or old Snohomish village park - all buildings and tombstones brought in and placed there to form this park setting, on top of the North portion of Snohomish Cemetery - the original one. Is the decertification, if made possible, only, going to be applied to the South Portion on the South side of the highway cut of 1947, or its it said that no graves exist in the North portion of this Cemetery which resides on the North side of the highway cut of 1947? Ref. The HERALD, Everett, WA. Date: Thurs. Nov. 3, 2005 Section: Local Site: http://www.heraldnet.com/about Article: Search uncovers more remains than expected Workers find 50 burial sites where Snohomish is building its new senior center By Yoshiaki Nohara, Herald Writer Map showing location of proposed site of New Senior Center - doesn't name Cypress Street, but does show the Pilchuck River just east of the site below the cemetery. "Cemetery" is shown on the map location. On p. B2 the article continues: Remains : Not all the graves were relocated after highway was built And a quote of Larry Bauman, Snohomish city manager "I think it's important to realize this process has a potential benefit for families." 2. Hi List My gr grandfather, Samuel Hansen, B Denmark abt 1847 had a land patent which was finalized in Nov 1891. My grandmother stated he died in 1891 leaving a wife, Catharina/Catrina and four children. I would like to find a probate, will or something that would give me more info as to his exact date of death and what disposition was made of his property. The same would be needed for his wife, Catharina who died in 1901. She had remarried in 1896 to Charles Rundberg who then died April 9, 1898. Perhaps the same records on Charles would also be helpful. Catharina left four children, two still living with her. My grandmother Lulu Hansen age 14 and Freddie Hansen. Can someone tell me to whom I should write to locate this information? Any and all help would be most appreciated. Carroll (Cooper) Summers Oregon

    3. Watching CH 2 TV this morning, I saw the OXFORD TAVERN pictured by a video camera across Main or First Street, Snohomish (WA). From the Story it is supposed to be "haunted" yet by latecomers who own or occupy the place and by the ParaNormal "experts" who know about such things. First of all the OXFORD TAVERN is said by the TV media to have been a brothel years ago. It is amusing to me the way this has come about, after my being born in Snohomish 1924 and having grown up playing as a kid various places in our quaint town of old. I say this because living at 806 - 2nd St. (later years altered to 812 ) I was 3 blocks away from the Oxford Tavern ( or Saloon ). We as a group of kids had friends who lived directly back of the Oxford Tavern along an alley which extended at one time from extreme S end of Ave A easterly to the extreme S end of Cedar St. When visiting our friends near our age of say age 10 we would see the "ladies of the night (& nite)" occasionally come out of the upper story rear of the Oxford Tavern on a scaffolding type place where they would come out for a smoke. They were dressed in their negligees, fully and completely sometimes alone and sometimes with a "trick" or male customer or two. I can recall them waving at us as we waved back at them. We kind of had an idea of what we were seeing enhanced by some of our older friends who kept us apprised of what we were seeing. Little did I realize that in a few years this area of our small town including Ave A, Union, 4th Street, Maple St. and Cedar Streets would become my Everett Daily Herald paper route, and that there were other places that were similar in nature - one in the rear of the tavern in the rear of the Eagles Hall in Snohomish at the S and dead end of Cedar and First, or Main St. I won't mention the others farther down Main toward the bridge near Ave D. This was a rough, tough logging town and it was common for the lumber jacks or loggers to come into town full of pitch, dirty and needing a bath, shave and haircut after they stopped at another Tavern (saloon) about 4 buildings E of the Oxford Tavern for their friendly sport after a few, a good fist fight in which they could wreck a tavern easily - but their tavern was designed for such fights and they never let up. After the fight and after they "got their bearings" they might get a bath, a shave , and a haircut, if needed ! Such a barber shop was a three chair barber shop owned by Herbert O. NESS who came to Snohomish in 1908, married in 1912, lived in the house next to what is today The Cabbage Patch restaurant. Herb Ness' barber shop was often known as NESS & FRASER BARBER SHOP as Harry Fraser was his partner for many years in Snohomish. The location of this barber shop was to the immediate LEFT of the Oxford Tavern. Attached to the Tavern and next to the barber shop was a Shoe Shine shanty where a black man attended to the shining of the shoes. Herb Ness provided the man known as "Fri with a place to live above the barber shop. Today, there is a void, an open space to the Left of the Tavern, caused by a FIRE that burned down or gutted the 3 chair barber shop and the restaurant owned by Homer White, a very good friend to Herb Ness. Herb Ness was not only a barber, but he became Asst. Chief of the Snohomish Fire Dept. a volunteer dept. just up Ave A nearby on the corner of 2nd St and Ave. A. However, the fire that took the Ness & Frazer Barber Shop and Homer White's restaurant (affectionately known by the "town" as The Greasey Spoon, but that was not the official name of it) happened in the wee hours of the night. Herb Ness was called on the phone and told that his barber shop was on fire, about the time that the town's fire whistle kicked into wailing the event. I can recall going down Union St from my home on 2nd St, seeing huge flames and smoke and feeling the heat from that huge fire. I wish to state that the so called "ghosts" that newcomers, and the paranormal would like us to believe is simply not so among the experiences we as earlier Snohomishites experienced. The Snohomish Library was not haunted by Catharine McMurchy (my/our very good friend over many years; nor the Oxford Tavern "ghosts" that have become a figment of some newcomer's imaginations. Wouldn't these aparitions have taken place in earlier times, when we all lived here and we knew the town inside out. Of course, on Halloween we'd drum up so called haunted places in town, or even when it wasn't Halloween. These were concocted to "take people in" as a way of having fun. Squirt guns (from WEEDS VARIETY) taken to Brown's Theatre and discharged from the balcony was another diversion. When the Everett Theatre was said to have been haunted, I checked these stories with two projectionists at Everett Theatre, Ed McMurray, and his understudy, Al Oscoecisz (spelling atrictious!) and both laughed when I called their attention to those stories that had cropped up among those who were taken in by the phenomena. There is a CLARK house on Meriden Ave. Southington, CT built by my ancestry. It is said that house which was located on what was formerly CLARK FARMS Road in SE portion of Southington is said to be haunted by as many as 11 chosts, but a little girl ghost is the most "active" one who "moves things" there. If there are ghosts, I have yet to experience this phenomena - I just keep it all up on a "shelf" until I EXPERIENCE this phenomena. I wonder if there are any "ghosts" at SNOHOMISH CEMETERY which is being dug up and hopefully remains accounted for decertifying the area to become a Snohomish Senior Center, and possible low incom housing where parking will be a problem because of s p a c e . Maybe someday Snohomish will be able to find and build a much better Senior Center like neighboring towns have been able to realize, but in the meantime the Snohomish Cemetery site will have to "do" after it is decertified as a cemetery within the town of Snohomish. Carroll in Snohomish b. here 1924 on 2nd St. In 1947, I was able to get back to that home after 2.5 yrs of complete bedrest fighting my lung disease. It was a RAINY OCTOBER 31st, 1947. The last that was heard from him was in 1881 in a letter to his mother. He wrote that he was leaving for Marysville, Washington. John was a schoolteacher by trade. After some I found him in the 1910 census, in Edgecomb Pct, Snohomish , Washington. I was not able to locate him in the 1900 or 1920 census. He was not married when he left Gallia County, Ohio, and in the 1910 census he is the head of house, but a single man. I can not tell from the form if he is single or widowed. His father was John D. George and mother Sarah Russell. I would appreciate any help I can find about Uncle John. Thank you very much for your help Cheryl Enyart Pres. 3. Hello, List Folks I've just updated the index to the CamWood Obituary Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wasnohom/camwoodintro.htm This collection covers the Stanwood and Camano Island area; the data file now contains almost 5400 lines. If you find Persons of Interest listed in the index, you can contact Charlotte, Carmella or Bill of the CamWood Genealogical Project (email addresses are on the project's Intro Page). They are happy to do lookups for you; they do not charge for this service, but might mention in a soft voice how WONDERFUL it'd be if you'd send a small donation to the Stanwood Area Historical Society. Regards, Marge

    3. Thank you for your most welcomed query re your Clark fam. that you seek. I know the feeling you have for wanting to know more. I have been exceedingly fortunate to have had "excellent luck" with my endeavors in genealogy since 1983 when I began. That is because my Lines left a lot of "paper traces" on my Clark, & related branches. However, my SCOTT (maternal Line) is more like yours. I haven't much info to go on and they didn't tend to leave "paper trails". BUT, one thing I know - "They Want to Be Found" a phrase I coined from my fortunate experiences in gen. hunting. Play the Clues and I did before getting a computer - but getting one has made the communications much more convenient, and rapid. I must say that I have looked at your information carefully, and I cannot find anything that might tie with any of the Clarks I have researched since 1983. I checked a History of Skagit and Snohomish Counties by Whitfield because I knew of a Clark Fam. that lived here in Snohomish City, but I've never been able to find that I tie with that family and they disappeared from here many yrs ago but I read their biog. sketch for clues. The head of that Clark was a William Clark, but nothing I could find related to yours, or mine. Anna's Clark Fam. is a branch of mine, newly found, via the great rootsweb system with its cyber trails-she found me via the rootsweb trails that I left to be found, and it worked well. I just heard from another of our relatives who came upon a bulletin such as this and he contated me - a real joy to be surprised via e-mail like that. I will keep your information for future ref so that if I do see any possible tie I can contact you. I have found that my Clark Line(s) tended to take residence in Northern states, mostly, as I have found very sparse of my Clarks who knowingly resided in Southern states. I don't take this for granted, however. Thank you again for your query with a sense of "plead" and I know that feeling - my Scotts, especially! Never give up, play the Clues as best you can - keep picking away at any possible sources, as it does pay to do so. Always include as much as you can re names, dates, and places as this helps. PS It is great to see you interested in genealogy - we need you! You are young and persons like you can keep gen. alive and well so that: THEY WANT TO BE FOUND -- and they will be !!! TIME is of the essence - LOL!!! Best Regards, Carroll (male) in Snohomish WA since 1924 ! [email protected] * * * 30 * * * ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nellie M.
