The 1900 City directory shows C. B. Bakeman to be the deputy coronor so in 1906 he might still have been serving in that position. In all likelihood, George Knudson/Knutson is buried in Harwood Cem. So, here's the problem. My store has been systimatically been robbed early this month and probably earlier than that. Lots of books are missing and those I've recovered are "special"...<sigh> To cover up the theft... books were removed and re-arranged... So... my book on the Harwood Cem. is missing as is my book about Arlington Obits. Both books should mention George. They were published by the Stillaguamish Valley Gen. Soc. in Arlington. (360) 435-4838 They are open Tuesdays 12-4 and Thursday 10-4 They do research for a very modest fee... (it costs money to rent a building). In the meantime I suggest writing to the Snohomish County Court House in Everett WA 98201 and order George's probate records. The Court House (Auditor Dept) should also have the coronor's report/death cert. The state vital statistics didn't start until the summer of 1907. I am also sending your note to Snohomish County list. Mary Ann (Hendrickson) Dunkin Fort Collins, CO ----------------------------------------------------- Everett Daily Herald 8-23-1906 Snohomish, Aug. 23- C.B. Bakeman, deputy coroner, is back from a trip to Darrington, to investigate the death of George Knudson, a man about 60 years old, who died at that place Monday probably from natural causes. the funeral was held in Arlington, Tuesday. Mr. Knudson owned a farm of thirty acres at that place, where he had resided for about eight years; he also owned a farm worth probably $11,000 in Nebraska, in which state he settled many years ago upon his arrival from Norway. Mr. Knudson was a geinius in a way, his peculiar talent being the manufacture of violins. Mr. Bakeman found in his humble little home, about fifty or sixty violins of unusual merit and made of all kinds of materials including vine maple, cedar and many other native woods. Although Mr. Knudson's talent was little known to the people of this county, it is probable that his fame is not altogether that unknown amoung violin and musical experts, for he had an exhibit at the Lewis and Clarke exposition ! and among many other marks of recogition received a silver medal. Mr. Knudson leaves a brother John, and a sister living in Darrington. Washington State Genealogical Society is soliciting articles for a new journal-style periodical. Our hope for The Washington State Genealogist journal is to provide a statewide outlet for individuals or organizations to publish previously unpublished articles containing information of genealogical value about those who pioneered and developed Washington State. It is not important what a contributing organization is called or the position of an individual compiler/author. Sometime in the future we may ask that contributors be members of Washington State Genealogical Society, but that is not required now. We especially want to provide small groups who do not have their own journal for publishing access and wide coverage of their research. We would like to explore a wide variety of sources, such as family bible records; school faculty lists, student censuses and yearbooks; attendees at pioneer days, company picnics or reunions; indexes for old, unindexed local history books; newspaper lists of court actions (licenses, dissolutions, land proofing, probates, etc.); abbreviated extracts of birth, marriage and death notices, or "gossip column" notes of family interest; genealogies or ahnentafels of local or state leaders; and other information showing who was where, when, and doing what. We hope to receive enough material to publish a 30- to 40-page journal on a quarterly basis.. We wish to limit articles to no more than four pages in length, although we could serialize longer writings of particular interest. A rticles need to identify sources using footnotes or end notes, or in an introductory statement if the article is an extract from a single source. To prevent copyright infringement, sources must be in the public domain or permission must be obtained from the copyright holder if the information extracted exceeds "fair use". We would prefer articles to be sent as an email attachment in Word or WordPerfect document or Rich Text (RTF) format. Times New Roman 12-pitch font is our preference, and pages should have 1-inch margins. If you would like to send us an article for our first issue, we would like it sent to my email address no later than 31 January 2006. I hope this adequately describes our goals for The Washington State Genealogist. Please contact me if you have additional questions or suggestions, or if you wish to contribute an article. Sincerely, Bob Witherspoon PO Box 491 Bellingham, WA 98227-0491 360-734-9835 [email protected]

Interesting? Oral history says the same of me, being descended from Pat Kanim, but have not been able to prove it. Maybe I can get started on it again. Pat Kanim is mention in early newspaper accounts of the Indian wars of 1855-6. I'm also Cowlitz and Skagit giving me a total of 3/16 native blood. A PICTURE at the archaeo. digs at Snohomish Cemetery (variously referred to as Indian Cem., Pioneer Cem., et al ) located at 2nd Street and Cypress at the Eastern edge of Snohomish providing access to and from the City via a bridge over the Pilchuck River, where the present Senior Center rests atop the old cemetery grounds. It has been said in newpapers of the area that officials interviewed said there were no more remains in the Cemetery as the remains were removed to the GAR Cemetery just West of the town of Snohomish. The Hwy 2 cut through approx. 80 ft wide swath through the old, neglected Cemetery was for the access to and from the City at its most Eastern side bridging the Pilchuck River. At first, the archaeologists found no indications of remains, but when a second more diligent survey was made, one set of skeletal remains were unearthed at the time. Recently, I reported that The Herald printed an article which claimed there were 50 remains sites found among the digging. At a meeting of the Snohomish Historical Society, I learned that there were approx. 53 remains found. Now, the Herald printed a picture, approx. 5 X 7 " which claims 57 places of remains have been found. Ref. The HERALD, Everett, WA. Date: Friday November 11, 2005 Vetran's Day Section: Local or B Section Site: http://www.heraldnet.com/about Article: NO article, just a picture with a caption: Title of picture: Digging for Snohomish bones Under the picture caption reads: Archaelogist Sean Tallman plots out a 10-by-10 foot grid in the search for human remains at the future site of the Snohomish Senior Center. Remains from an abandoned pioneer cemetery have been found in 57 places throught the site. COMMENT: The Snohomish Senior Center building which was placed on top of the Cemetery quite some years back remains there with no known digging beneath the structure. This land is where a new Snohomish Senior Center is to be built in the future along with other structures. The Northern part of this Cemetery is a smaller part of the original cem. on which rests a log cabin, various other bldgs. a house, a phaque cemetery made from tombstones that were removed from the the southern part of the Cemetery and relocated among the buildings to form a sort of example of a pioneer village for visitors to see, both adults and school children, or young people. This part of Snohomish Cemetery is still a part of the original and it has not been dug or disturbed by archaeologists, along with the Senior Center bldg. which has not been examined for remains beneath its structure to date, that I know of. When the first attempts at finding remains by archaeologists years ago when there was great skepticism of there being any remains at the Cem. the area was broken up in to 3 main parcels, and posted. Parcels A and B were the large portions of Snohomish Cemetery after the Hwy 2 cut was made, as legally as possible at that time, across the Pilchuck via a bridge. The cut was approx. 80 ft wide according to maps of the Cut. Do these Parcels A, B, and C still exist as a means of apportioning this Cemetery for decertification? Will only Parcels A and B be dug up for remains both of which are on the South side of Snohomish Cemetery and where the Snohomish Senior Center bldg. rests? Will Parcel C (the North portion of the original Snohomish Cemetery on which the Phaque Village rests which is made open to the public? Will decertification of the Snohomish Cemetery be in part or in whole i.e Parcels A,B, and C. or will it be done by Parcels or portions? Will there be any digging beneath the existing Snohomish Senior Center bldg. which rests on top of the Old Cemetery, that was neglected and allowed to be abandoned? Yes, times were tough in the past, when various funds for upkeep were hampered by lack of them, and lack of interest in Cemetery. Yet, the persons buried there were Pioneers, both Indian (Nat. Amer.) and Caucasian. The list is available, thanks to persons who were concerned did the Research necessary to show that though the records of Snohomish Cemetery were "LOST!" and they couldn't be found - the Research of Genealogy had to be used to form a List of those buried at Snohomish Cem. and when, if possible, this took place. Why do I care? I had a Grandfather who kept the records, the plot maps, the rubber plot stamps, the record, the stationery, the Information needed for a cemetery. At the time it was known as Kent Cemetery, but that name has changed over the many years, and I believe today it is known as something like East Cemetery - located high on a hill East of Kent, where my Pioneer Clark Family are buried, including my Father who died when I was age 3. AT age 12, a witnessed the many large tables of cemetery drawings, or plot maps. My Grandfather was a grad. Civil Engineer, as was my Father. I spent a lot of time visiting cemeteries and I developed a keen respect for them. I saw the neglect of the cemetery at Woodinville many years ago, and I also saw where that cemetery was revitalized and is a landmark in that area today. Some cemeteries were damaged by flood plains, and the remains had to be removed, but the respect was there and I always marveled at Snohomish Cemetery just above our swimming hole below the old steel structure, very narrow bridge across the Pilchuck. A road went around old Snohomish Cem. and crossed the Pilchuck. That route was considered but a Cut was decided to be done through the old Cem. for Hwy 2 which went through the City of Snohomish toward Monroe. The NEW Hwy 2 circumventing the town of Snohomish has replaced it but the old Cut is still used . I am all for a fine Senior Center in Snohomish - Monroe has a great center, Marysville has a great center, Auburn has a beautiful brick center. Snohomish deserves a First Class Center. One with plenty of parking. I'm against placing structures on top of a Cemetery, any cemetery while it is still a certified cemetery, If a cemetery is good enough to place structures on top of it, it is worthy of the attention it should have had as a cemetery - and not neglect from those whose responsibility changes to "fit" a different perspective.
