Whitfield, Supervising Editor, Pioneer Historical Publishing Company, Chicago-Seattle, 1926, Vol. I, Page 614: MACHIAS--Midway between Snohomish and Hartford, and where the Western Washington Railway connects with the Northern Pacific. This is an old community center, first settled by Charles Neimeyer, who at the age of 90 is still residing there, and A. J. Andrus, deceased, whose son Louis still resides on the original homestead. In 1890 L. W. Getchell bought eighty acres there and started the town, and it has continued to be one of the important natural trade centers of that portion of Snohomish County, situated only six miles due east of Everett. It is the seat of a fine farming country, especially the bottom lands of the Pilchuck Valley. Albert Sapp was one of the early postmasters, beginning in 1894 and serving a number of years. Machias Union High School is a feature, built in 1907, costing $20,000. I have a 1901-1902 Everett City Directory/Snohomish County Directory which lists about 20 businesses in Machias. It describes Machias: A post office formerly called Rudd and station on the Northern Pacific Ry, 7 miles e of Everett (13 by rail), and 5 1/2 n of Snohomish , the nearest banking point. Lumber and shingles are manufactured, and farm produce is raised and shipped.

You can find the current location of Machias, WA, by going to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) website at http://geonames.usgs.gov . Under Query GNIS, click on U.S. and territories In the Feature Name block, enter Machias (or any name you are looking for) In the State of Territory block, enter Washington For "Machias," the results show three entries where that name appears: a Populated Place, a School and an Airport. Each entry includes the latitude and longitude of the location. If you click on one of the names, GNIS will take you to a page with additional information. On this page you can click on four mapping options which will show you a topographic map, an aerial photo, a map used for the census, and a watershed map. GNIS doesn't help much with early settlement names unless they still appear on recent maps, but its great for finding mapped names in dozens of "classes," such as populated place, cemetery, river, tower, dam, etc. Try it, you'll like it. Oh! the populated place of Machias is located a little southeast of Lake Stevens, which is east of Everett, Washington. Bob Witherspoon 360-734-9835

Is there someone who can look at the 1900 teens and early 1920s. I would like to know when Mary J. Scott first shows up in directories of Everett. In 1920 she is listed as living at 2409 State Street. When is the last that she is listed? When her son, Charles E. Scott and his sons, Chester Ray and Guy Arthur, signed up for the WW1 draft they gave their address as 2409 State Street. Is Chester Ray Scott listed in the directories in 1918 and after? It is thought he had a wife, Helen Scott. By 1900 Charles had married Jennie as they are listed in the census. I have further information on them. He had a brother Luther Alman Scott who also lived in Everett. I have all the information on him and family. Any help with this family from the city directories will be greatly appreciated. Monroe and surrounding area researchers - I have an old "school writing journal" that is full of old newspaper articles, obits, events, etc; for Monroe, Wash and for family with the Mossford name - I haven't had a chance to read thru it completely, but if anyone is interested I will start posting on this site any of the articles that have Club Names, School information, city and surrounding area info, and Surnames. The time period is aprox 1900 to 1961. Below is an example of what this collection contains: 1 - several reportcards for FRANCES MOSSFORD from NAPA Public Schools 1903 - (and I believe became a school teacher). 2 - the first obit: 1915 JAMES C. MOSSFORD James C. Mossford, for over half a century a resident of Mercer County, died at his home in Jackson township January 19, aged almost 73 years. He was born in Twerton, Cheshire, England, June 16, 1842, and in 1861 came to the United States and Mercer county. Since that time his home has been in this section. In 1866 he married Miss Martha Turner, a daughter of the late Alex Turner, of Worth township, who died last year. Forty years ago he united with the Fairview Methodist Episcopal church and until his death was an active church worker and as a man and citizen was respected by all who knew him. He is survived by one son, V.T. Mossford, of Mercer; and one daughter Mrs. Zella Roberts, who made her home with him, three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held at the home on Friday, conducted by Rev. Thompson of Stoneboro, and interment was made in Union Home cemetery. If there is any interest in more of this info, please let me know thru this site. Pam

I attended a mtg., last week, of the SNO-ISLE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, thanks to Victoria Harrington who picked up Patsy Danhof and myself for the trip to a Lynnwood Fire Station where we found a room filled with Avid Seekers of Genealogy. Marge Reid gave an EXCELLENT talk on DIRECTORIES: She was very well organized and prepared for a TALK about a topic that ALL GENEALOGISTS could benefit by. Beginning with the dictionary definitions of the topic word, it became apparent that there was much more to the word DIRECTORIES, or DIRECTORY than definition offered. I think it opened ALL of our EYES as to how involved Directories can be and what a wealth of Information, and Clues that are contained therein. POPE Directories, offered much more for the Family History Buff than one might conider. The List of Abbreviations alone offered a great many LEADS in themselves for Reading the various sections of the directory as an illustration in point. I think that we broadened our views on just what consitutes DIRECTORIES. Marge Reid used a computer controlled projector on an excellent Fire Station Meeting Room screen, thanks to my 4th Cousin, Margaret Summitt who owns this excellent Tool . Marge ALWAYS injects her great sense of HUMOUR (Brit.) into whatever she says, and she didn't short-change us with her presentation on DERECTORIES that evening. Not dry by any means, Marge gave it her ALL and she verbalized the Text that was displayed on the screen so that all could absorb what was being presented. I hope that Marge makes her Informative Message to Genealogy available for all Genealogists to read, as I am sure that they will benefit by it, greatly. After ALL - They Want to Be Found applies here because Marge presented a great Source for the Clues we need to break down those BRICK WALLS. Perhaps I will make use of her e x p e r t i s e in "Shagging Out" my SCOTT FAMILY Ancestry which has alluded me most.
