    3. Have you tried contacting the GILBERTSON FUNERAL HOME, STANWOOD ? They should have obit Info, and info about the family related to Bessie. Also, Everett Herald archives should be of some help to you re your query. Everett Library Northwest Room is another source for your need. By the way, I see that you subscribe to greatnorthern.net for your E-Mail - my query: Does "greatnorthern.net" have anything to do with the Great Northern Railway ? I need to know because I have ancestry that worked on the Great Northern Railway out of Tacoma, WA and various other States. My SCOTT ancestry might be of record via Great Northern Railway archives of their employees, I'm thinking. If anyone else "out there" has info about how to use Railway Archives to trace ancestry, I'd appreciate learning how to access this source. "They Want to be Found!" my Motto. Cc. 1. Snohomish Cemetery debacle FYI:
    2. Carroll Clark
    3. I have obtained permission to copy the following article from our Snohomish County Tribune, dated Wednesday, January 4, 2006, Volume 117, Number 1 2005 Year in Review Issue: Article (header):: Snohomish discovers 96 remains at old settler's cemetery By Jenny Zuvela + PIX Snohomish Senior Center on top of the Cemetery. by Doug Ramsay. Text as follows: Archeologists ahve found 96 possible human remains buried under the site planned for a nrw Snohomish Senior Center, which sits on top of an abandoned pioneer cemetery. Tulalip Tribes officials said they would object to the construction of the center before remains are identified. Historical accounts point to a tribal burial ground at the site before pioneers settled in the area. The cemetery has been abandoned since the 1920s. "Before the project can continue we need to know whose (remains) they are," Tribal Councilmember Glen Gobin said. "Nothing's going to happen until that's done." That has been the plan since the beginning, said City Manager Larry Baum,an, as the city is following a court-ordered process of finding, identifying and removing remains before prepping the land for construction. The number of possible remains found surprised city staff and the Tulalip Tribes and lef Gobin wondering why these remains weren't moved almost 60 years ago. In 1947, the state decertified part of the cemetery and paved Highway 2, now Second Street, through the middle of it. At that time the state removed 111 remains to the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, and relatives have removed and relocated others throughout the decades. Apparently, they didn't remove them all. Seven or eight positive indications of human remains were found in part of the Second Street right-of-way, in the area that the state decertified as a cemetery in 1947. "We were really surprised to find anything there," Bauman said. "We really thought all of that would (have been) removed when they built the highway. "We were surprised to find as many as we did throughout the site." The Tribes signed an agreement to partner with the city throughout this process based on the assumption that the remains had already been removed, Gobin said. The city identified one intact burial and one probably burial on the site using ground-penetrating radar in 1998, support services director Brad Nelson said. The technology at the time was not sophisticated enough to reveal what was really under the surface, and root systems from trees that have grown since the cemetery was used may have interfered, Bauman said. Snohomish County Superior Court has since ordered the city to conduct a more intrusive, accurate study, Bauman said. It began in August and was expected to last three to four weeks. Due to the large number of possible remains, the process dragged out into four months, he said. Working on one 10-foot-by-10 foot section at a time, archeologists used a backhoe to dig down two inches at a time until they reached undisturbed soil 18 to 24 inches down, checking for indications of grave shafts, Bauman said in a past interview. The city's next step is to obtain authorization from the judge for archeologists to fully open the burial shafts, exhume the graves and identify the remains. The judge's decision will be based on the archeologists' report to be completed in Februrary. Experts would then study bone structure and any items found with the remains, such as coffin handles, jewlry or tribal artifacts, to determine ethnicity and possibly identy, Bauman said. But the sheer number of possible remains found could prompt leaders to reconsider building at all, Gobin said. According to the plan, those remains determined to be of American Indian descent will be turned over to the Tulalip Tribes, identified remains will be returned to relatives, and unclaimed remains will be buried at the GAR Cemetery. The Tribal Counsel will make decisions on what to do should any remains be idenified as American Indian, Gobin said. "We don't know yet what the best option is," he said. "A lot of it hinges on identifying those remains." Archeologists did not discover indications that any of the remains are American Indian, but that doesn't mean none of them are, Bauman said. Meanwhile, the 273 senior membersstill have a long wait before getting their new building. Plans to build a $1.2 million, 6000 square-foot center and six to eight apartments for affordable senior housing have been pushed back due to this process, and the board of directors now hopes for a December 2006 opening. The seniors have almost met their fundraising goal through state and county grants, corporate constributions, privage donations and pledges, executive director Karen Charnell said. They are still $80,000 short. The City Council earmarked $150,000 for the decertification process from start to finish, but that won't be enough, Nelson said. Staff will ask the council to revise the budget in February or March. Gobin was suprised that only the Tribes have raised concerns about building the center over a former cemetery. "Nobody else is standing up trying to protect the non-Indian ancestors that are there," Gobin said. "It's a cemetery. I find it hard to believe that no one else is really standing up and saying anything." End of the article from the Tribune in full with the permission from the Editor Jessica Sparks. * * * 30 * * * COMMENT: What remains are there beneath the present Senior Center Building which was placed on top of the Cemetery? What remains are in the North portions of the old Cemetery on the North side of Second Street where "old Snohomish Village" is on display, and was designated by the City as Parcel C, when the South of the Highway Cut was designated as Parcels A and B, or the part that the above article is all about? How does a TOWN pioneer cemetery become ABANDONED? When is a Cemetery, like Snohomish Cemetery, NOT a c e m e t e r y ? Is there NO HISTORY in this Cemetery? Why is there a List of Names of persons buried there (or whose remains may have been removed to GAR for the Hwy 2 Cut (only!!)? "They" are surprised to find that there are remains there - how l o n g have I been writing about this Subject? Common sense would show that the whole Cemetery, Parcels A, B, and C were never completely "dug up" - the cost would have been prohibitive. Removing tombstones doesn't exhume a whole cemetery at so many $$ per skull found. Just the Hwy 2 dig was more costly than had been anticipated at the time - there were multiple burials, not just one burials remains per plot! That was disclosed in the records back when the Hwy 2 dig was completed - an 80 ft. swathe not out of the center of the Cemetery but quite off center so that Parcels A and B are the largest parts on the South side of the cut, while Parcel C is on the North and much smaller portion of the Hwy 2 cut. 3. Hi Adina ! I am interested in hearing from you re your Clark Lines as I have quite a bit of Clark Line ancestry that I can check against. I am not familiar with the name "Permiliea Strong CLARK" but she could be among my Clark Line(s). I understand that my Clarks intermarried with at least 5 other Clark lines, but I'd like to try to play Clues with your Clark collection. Since my Clark Line goes back to William and Elizabeth ________ TUTTLE via their son John Tuttle m. Katareen ( Catherine, Katherine) LANE TUTTLE whose daughter Hannah Tuttle married my direct line Samuel Clark of New Haven, CT m. 1672. Sam. Clark and Hannah Tuttle CLARK were my 8th Great Grandparents. (Samuel Clark was the son of James CLARK, our Immigrant 9th Great Grandparent, hwf unknown, and not Sarah Harvey as it hasn't been PROVEN ). I have all of my direct Clark Line for 14 generations. My direct Line Clarks migrated from (England, 1637 aboard the "Hector" then, 1638 New Haven Colony (among the Founders) then: to Upper State NY near the border to Ontario CAN; then, to Switzerland Co., IN; and Decatur Co, IN; then from INdiana to ORegon via the Oregon Trail in 1847 where they lived from 1847 - 1865; then they migrated from OR in 1865 to WAshington Territory in 1865 to White River Valley, Washington Territory (now known as KENT, WA just South of Seattle, WA; and also along the Columbia River near The Dalles OR but on the WASHINGTON side of the Columbia River at Lyle, WA and up into the interior NE of Lyle called HIGH PRAIRIE, and also HARTLAND, WAshington. Great Great Grandfather JASON S. CLARK (Jason SQUIER Clark) was buried at the Lone Pine Cemetary (Yes, that is the way "Cemetery" is spelled above the entrance to the Cem. - LOL, but I wouldn't have it changed !) at HIGH PRAIRIE/HARTLAND. His son was Postmaster at the turn of the 20th Century at Hartland, WA Post Office (David Rice CLARK). The STRONG surname was certainly prominent in early Colonial CT history. I had a professor in college by that name, and I wish I had been steeped in Genealogy at the time - that was circa. 1956, and I didn't get BITTEN BY THE GEN BUG until 1983. I surely missed an opportunity as our Prof. STRONG was from New Haven and he was steeped in that history as I recall, but little did I realize that I would come to find my Ancestry back to New Haven in the 1638- on era. I wore out a lot of shoe leather, a lot of tires, and made myraid bus trips to the Seattle Public Library, and the Seattle Genealogical Society before I could afford a computer. It was well worth it and it paid off generously when copies were 15 cents a copy. I stopped at a bank for dimes and nickles in order to get rather gungey copies back then. I was able to see that my Grandfather had attempted to do genealogy at these sources, but he was only able to go back 3 generations from his self. 1. Death of a Cemetery-Snohomish Cemetery:
    2. Carroll Clark
    3. It was proclaimed to us that there were NO remains left in the Old Indian Cemetery, Pioneer Cemetery, SNOHOMISH CEMETERY; Archeologists found none, at first, but in time one skeletal remains was found and immediately covered up. In recent "digs' a few remains were found, then 57 were found, and now 96 remains locations have been found. A good many of them were found under that black top parking spaces of the Snohomish Senior Center which was from an old house that was free and it was removed from a near Front Street location and place on top of the Cemetery at its SW edge of the Cemetery. The house was so small, that 30 ft. had to be added onto it to make room for Bingo and other activities at the Senior Center. Here is the latest that has appeared in the TV media and at least The Herald newspaper of Everett, WA. Ref. The HERALD, Everett, WA. Date: Saturdays' Herald December 24, 2005 Christmas Eve. Section: Main Page among the headlines Site: http://www.heraldnet.com/about Article: Burial ground causes a furor The Tulalip Tribes object to plans for a senior center at a site where bones have been discovered. By Yoshaki Nohara and Cathy Logg, Herald Writers Map showing the location of Snohomish Cemetery as denoted by Cemetery with a "box" in caps: SENIOR CENTER PLANNED The article is lengthy and continues on the back page of this section "See REMAINS" COMMENT: According to this article, 96 locations of remains have been found via archeological inspection and "digs". Apparently the blacktopped parking area for the old house placed upon the Cemetery for a Senior Center, and 30 ft. added onto it later for greater space contained much of the remains locations. The city broke the remaing part of the Cemetery into 3 parcels; Parcel A, Parcel B. and Parcel C. The old Senior Center on top of the Cemetery was located on Parcel A the SW portion of the remaining Cemetery after the Hwy 2 cut was made(in 1947) for the 80 ft wide swath through the old Cemetery for the highway access from Snohomish City eastward toward Monroe via Hwy 2. Parcel B is the SEastern large portion of the Cemetery unditurbed by the Hwy 2 cut. Parcel C is the Northern portion - a much smaller portion- of the Cemetery on which have been placed, a log cabin, and several old buildings from various place in Snohomish brought there along with a house, and several tombstones from the main part of cemetery. The latter form a phaque cemetery as a part of the setting for an Old Snohomish Village site for schoolchildren, and visitors to visit, at a price, unless otherwise designated at times. This parcel C has been in disrepair for some time, but upkeep is hoped to revive in time. Parcel C is still a part of the original Snohomish Cemetery, and I have heard of no measures to do archeological "digs" and sensing for remains in that part of the Cemetery. "The whole is the sum of its parts" someone said back in grade school, high school, by a source of wisdom. Snohomish Cemetery was broken up by the cut through the Cemetery (80 ft. cut) for 1) Hwy 2 as legally possible in 1947. Then the City of Snohomish broke the remaining part of the Cemetery into Parcels A, B, and C. as related above. The Greek States of Ancient Greece experienced the "Divide and Conquer" -dividing and conquering the various Greek States and now Parcels A, B, and C. are experiencing the same sort of "parceling" to achieve a Goal - Our New Senior Center, when the Cemetery can be "decertified". Does this mean that Parcels A and B might be "decertified" while Parcel C, or the North portion of Snohomish Cemetery remains, unexhumed, and as a "old Snohomish Village" for all to see if it can be "maintinaed" and "viewable" What would happen if remains were found in that North portion (Parcel C) of the old Snohomish Cemetery. How about remains UNDER the existing (Parcel A) old Senior Center building - We've been told there were none, but that's what was said about the Cemetery per se, and it "ain't necessarily so" as the lyrics have said. 3. Since Bob Witherspoon has given you info to find Machias, WA, I will "break-in" with an offer to try to find Info about Jack Capern OLSEN, or John Olsen. I have friends who know Machias, WA quite well, and who might be able to provide me with some tie, or a clue to Jack Olsen of Machias. I did check my copy of An Illustrated History of Skagit and Snohomish Counties, Pub. by Interstate Publishing Company 1906 and in the Section on Biog. Sketches, I found a Peter Olsen of Stanwood, WA on p. 997. On p. 997 Peter Olsen's Biog Sketch states that he is from Denmark, and in the last paragraph it states: In 1883 in New York, Mr. Olsen maried Miss Christiana Olsen, like himself a native of Denmark, the daughter of John Olsen. The year of her birth is 1856." Now, this may or may not be your John Olsen, or Jack C. Olsen. The next thing I can do is try to contact someone among the Machias clans who could provide me any info regarding the name you are interested in. I know that I can contact someone who has the Machias Historical Society info as I have attended a few of their picnics, and I know a lot of people who have their roots in Machias, WA. Other Machias, WA genealogists may see this - that's why I am posting it to the two bulletins that could be helpful. I will see what I can do to promote some info or Clues for you to follow, asap. Carroll in Snohomish, WA a short distance from Machias, WA.
