I was very excited to find my ancestor MADELINE S. PHILLIPS and her daughter ETHEL N. PHILLIPS in the 1930 D.C. census on page 12, enumeration Dist. 300, sheet 12-A, thanks to a genealogy friend. However, there is one entry that I can't figure out. In the column #s 7 & 8 each person is asked "Home owned or rented" and "Value of home". All the replies are either "R" for rent or "O" for own. My ancestor's entry is completely different. I can't really decipher what it is but it may be "Um", "Nu" or something similar in appearance. Has anyone found a different entry for their ancestor in these columns? Can anyone venture a guess as to what the symbol could represent? What other options were represented? How might I find out what all the options were? Thanks for any help in solving this puzzle. Pam
