Thanks to the helpful folks at Glenwood Cemetery, I now have the name of the undertaker who took care of Charles F. Robinson my (almost certain) g-grandfather. I'm still trying to verify that I have the right Charles F. Robinson. Does anyone know where to find records from the undertaker John William Lee? He was operating in 1902 as well as 1912 (when Charles died). Charles was buried in the same site as an 11-year-old girl, Sadie Robinson, who died in 1902. The name Sadie is not familiar, but the family had a daughter of the right age in 1900 named Maude with an initial that looked like a G. I'm hoping the undertaker's records, if they still exist, might clear up some of the mysteries. Susan in Missouri
From a 1912 Washing Post Ad: J. WILLIAM LEE, Funeral Director and Embalmer. Livery in connection. Commodious Chapel and Modern Crematorium. Modest Prices. 332 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. Telephone Main 1385. a) I don't know if a funeral business is established at that address now that 'might' have the records, but ... b) I've seen suggestions that the Martin Luther King Library in D. C. may have records of defunct funeral homes. c) have you tried the D. C. Archives? Official records are available given a name and date of event generating the record. E-mail to [email protected] has always worked for me, with a response within 3 weeks (a couple of times it was more like 6 days). Note: there is a '.' between Robert and Nelson.
