I am trying to find a death record and obit for Margaret Nailor widow of Allison Nailor. I found her in the 1920 census listed as Margretta Nailor 80, living with a companion. She was not in the 1930 census, probably died soon after this census. Would I try the health dept or the DC archives. Would they look up a record if I could not give them an exact death date? Any help or direction appreciated. Joy, Napa, CA
Did you check alternate spellings, such as Naylor? Sometimes, even that late, someone might be entered under a different spelling by the census taker. I've been through several DC city directories just once, so far, and need to get to the MLK this week. What I found when I went through the DC city directories (at the Fairfax library) was that retired people were simply not listed, even in the early 20th century. (I've seen people listed as retired in city directories done in other cities.) So, I doubt she'd be in any of these. The MLK _might_ have an obituary index for DC. I don't know for sure as I've never been there. If there is one anywhere, it's likely to be there.
