    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] 1st Pres. Church records?
    2. Can anyone tell me if there are records in existence for the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC? I am specifically interested in the earliest years, from 1795 to 1812. At that time it was called St. Andrews, I think. I would like to access those early records somehow. Any information on how to do so or information on the early history of the church would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pam

    3. Pam, According to "Guide to the Records of your District of Columbia Ancestors" by Eleanor M. V. Cook, the church had its origin as early as 1795 and the first services were held in a carpenter shop erected for the use of workmen engaged in building the Presidential Mansion, then in a frame chapel erected on F Street near St. Patrick's Church. In 1812 a church was dedicated on South Capitol Street, with President Madison among its contributors. The book continues with the history of the church throughout the 1800s into the 1900s. Nothing is ever mentioned about it being called "St. Andrews." The records for the First Presbyterian Church are at the DAR Library. I know you wanted 1795-1812, but unfortunately this book says the records don't begin until 1841.
