Contacted my son-in-law, who is a Brit and also worked at the Embassy in DC for many years, and received the following answer: The Embassy doesn't have records going back that far.  The only thing I can suggest is that they contact the Foreign Office in London who may have records going back that far in the archives.   Address is   Foreign and Commonwealth Office King Charles Street London  SW1 Hope this is of some help.
