    3. Deborah, Grayson County, VA was formed in 1792 from part of Wythe County and was named for William Grayson, one of Virginia's first two U.S. Senator's. Carroll County cut off from Grayson in 1842. I'm not as familiar with Carroll Co. history and do not know how that county was named. I'm not quite sure I understand your question, but if I'm following you correctly, I think it's possible that a person could have been name for a person OR a place, or both. In this case, Carroll Grayson Galt wasn't b. until 1889, and was b. in DC. Time-wise, it is quite far removed from the formation of Carroll and Grayson counties. Considering he was b. in DC, it would make sense to me that perhaps the parents might have been fond of their country home and would have named a child for the place they loved. (It IS beautiful, mountainous country.) Also, looking at the tree submission on the Internet for him, there was also a child in the family -- or it might have been his parent's family, I can't remember for sure now -- but the child was named Augusta, which as I had mentioned previously is the county where Woodrow Wilson was from. If those families/surnames were being honored or were still honored at the time the ancestor was named wouldn't it be more likely that the ancestor was named after the family surname then after the county? Such as Baltimore being named for Lord Baltimore. Of course it all comes out the same in that the ancestor had that name.
