Del Ray was an 1894 subdivision in what was then Alexandria (after 1920 Arlington) County, Virginia. The southern third of the county, including Del Ray, however, was annexed by the city of Alexandria in 1930. The subdivisions of Del Ray and St. Elmo were incorporated as the town of Potomac in 1908. At the time you are interested in, the early 1900s, Del Ray more narrowly applied to the original subdivision, roughly south of Mt. Ida Avenue, north of East Bellefonte Avenue, east of Commonwealth Avenue, and west of Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1). Today, people refer loosely to Del Ray (for real estate purposes) to pretty much all of the area in Alexandria east of Commonwealth Avenue, north of Braddock Road, east of Route 1, and south of East Glebe Road.
