    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Insane Asylums
    2. Can anyone give me any information on Insane Asylums in the DC area between 1850-1900. One of the people I am currently researching from Prince George's County was apparently declared insane around 1880 according to the 1880 census. He died sometime before the 1900 census, as his wife is listed as a widow. I am trying to find additional information to place his date of death. Additionally, one member of DC based family line is listed as an attendant at an insane asylum in the 1880 census. Chuck

    3. Hello, I just wanted to let you know that there were hospitals for mental patients in both Maryland and Virginia besides St. E's (Elizabeth's) in the District of Columbia. In Takoma Park, Maryland just blocks from the District line in Montgomery County there was/is Washington Sanitarium and Hospital, now called Washington Adventist Hospital. They took mentally ill patients. There were various veteran's hospitals that cared for those men and women who became ill.. It is my understanding that the hospitals had to list individuals for the census, so you may find your person on an institutional list. Helen
