I looked at the 1850 references for DC AND MD. There were no John and Catherine Shields listed together. I know they were m. in 1850 (June) and that the census was taken in July - so they technically should be listed as living together. Can you think of anyplace else they might have lived? My only other guess would be with his parents - if they were with the Kelly family, John's name - Shields - should show up in an index as it differs from the head of household. A search on all the Shields in DC may reveal - I will do that when I get time. Always love a challenge! I did look in the DC/MD 1900 index and did not find anything that I could call definite (a long shot anyway). I think I can look up the 1860 refs - I'll keep you posted.
