Dear List, Since the subject of orphanages came up, and Maryland, DC, and Virginia are so close, I have a small book that maybe some folks would like a look up from. The title is Apprentices, Poor Children, and Bastards, Loudoun County, VA 1757-1850 by Louisa Skinner Hutchison. I find the concept of a child being called a bastard offensive. We are all equal, beloved, children of a Divine Creator. If you would like a look-up please let me know. There is an excellent article about the history of the orphanage in the current issue of Washington History (18:1-2, 2006). I don't know whether the Historical Society of Washington has extra copies available for individual sale, but they used to do that. You could contact them at 801 K Street NW, DC 20001 or by phone at 202-373-1850.
